Engine builders, please check in - update block is NFG

damn, I dont know why machining is so expensive out there. I had a 3970010 350 block bored .030 over, checked out, cleaned, new freeze plugs, and a pair of heads shaved and screw in studs installed for $340 or so last year. I bought a reman crankshaft from the parts store for about $90. was cut .010" on the rods and .020" on the mains.... and most of it is still sitting in my parents basement:(

best quote I can seem to get is about $500 for just a bore/hone, around $600 if I get a hot tank and new cam bearings.

That's crazy. I had my block hot tanked, checked, bored .030, cam bearings installed, 3 sets of heads checked (two sets were cracked) and one set reworked, pistons pressed onto rods, and that same set of heads cleaned again up later on....all for $350-400...

Scott (4X4HIGH) would be the man with the answer. Either wait or PM him.
All of my books are in storage in S.C. right now.

Seems some people around here just want to stir up sh*t so i've decided against giving my input on engine related stuff anymore. Do a search and i'm sure you'll find out who i'm talking about.

I really appreciate the advice and the knowledge you've shared so far. This is my first small block build and I'd like to do it right the first time without spending more than $3K.

So I pulled the pistons and crank. As it turns out using a max allowable out of round at .002" each of the bores appear to be at that value and 2 that are above it. On top of that I was now able to fully inspect the bores top to bottom with the pistons out. It turns out that the #1 cylinder has some scuffing. The #2 has a slight bit too. Check out the pic:

So I am now certain that the cylinders need to be bored. I did just get an offer for a freshly stock rebuilt 400cid punched .030 over for $500. I think I'll actually make out cheapest with the 400 than machining this block or getting a crate engine. More to come...

If I had anything to do with that rest assured I will shut my mouth.... you seem to have a ton of knowledge to share with fellow ck5ers and it'd be a shame to deny them of invaluable knowledge because of a few "know it alls"

Nope, nothing to do with you.

C305,

If you haven't done it already, check out the PACE Performance or GMPP websites.

Lately they've been on a huge push to sell shortblock and longblock factory crate motors and ludicrously low prices..... So cheap that you might not be able to build them yourself for less $$$.

It's worth a quick look if you haven't already done it.
