Ok guys the wife got a job up in Alaska, north pole to be exact. She Flew up there about half a month ago. Me being the unemployed sap just out of the army I get to drive from the bottom of Alabama to north pole Alaska. Twice.
4200 miles one way.

Why drive? Shipping a vehicle costs about 4 grand at what I have priced. So I did the math why not just drive it. Besides I still have to move my house stuff. A moving company wants to charge 13k to move my stuff. Yeah no. Well I plan on taking pictures on the way both times. The First trip is going to be me in a 26 ft u-haul towing my wife's car. A Subaru impreza weighs about 3500 lbs. I have a dog and a cat which will be riding along with me. I went to college up in Fairbanks but I never had a chance to drive the highway.

The second leg is going to be my 1989 k5 blazer towing my 3300 +/- lb corvette. I have 40 inch boggers in the K5 which I am downsizing to 35 inch for towing purposes. 4:88 gears, 700 r4 overdrive and a 383 which is getting the tbi system tuned currently. Engine has about 600 miles, trans has the same. I figured if any vehicle breaks down on the way I have a spare. Sure I could sell my cars but then I would just have to buy more.

The military is reimbursing me for the u-haul load so that will help out quite a bit. I have canceled our lease on the house here in enterprise, Al. Boxed up the majority of our possessions, just waiting on a passport to drive through Canada. I just winterized 2 of my cars, the k5 is going to be winterized as soon as it is converted back to tbi. The shop is doing the reversal. I am mechanically inclined but I have a lot of other things going on.

So a few days ago I started winterizing the Subaru and corvette. Changed the mixtures of the cars to 66 percent antifreeze and 33 percent distilled water supposedly good til -55. Installed engine block heaters and battery blankets. Running synthetic oil in both cars so they should be ready. I know it's a bit overkill since it is warming up but I really don't want to worry about it on the side of the road. Here are some pictures:

I left the tails of the zip ties! Battery warmer and engine block warmer.

Some fuel cans my buddy gave me, should help me avoid the costly stations. Dog bomb!

Battery tender installed.

Did the same with the other car, which is kind of overkill. Not many corvettes running around with block heaters.

Yeah should be fun, the wife said it was -20 in Fairbanks today.:haha:It's like 70 degree in Alabama today.

Looking forward to the pics and stories from the road. Hope its a smooth trip for you.

Updates!

My new passport showed up yesterday, wow I do not look like I was when I was 16 anymore. Just scheduled a u-haul with a car carrier and scheduled my power and water service to be cut off after I leave. 95 Percent of my house is packed up. Still gotta go through the closet that serves as my garage. Lotta stuff to donate/give to people who are gonna help me load the u-haul. Found a guy locally who will burn me a chip to get the blazer running correctly. Still gotta mount the dinky 35's on my truck and put some synthetic rear diff oil.

Anyway here are some pictures:

pack.jpg My junk

tires.jpg I almost traded down for 265's but I did a google search and decided my truck would look too stupid and possibly unstable...

plug.jpg Plug in for engine block heater, battery tender, and battery warmer. This is what happens when you let your wife drive your Vette. This part probably has the worst paint on the entire car. Yes I am wearing flip flops...

:haha:

Can't imagine there are many Vette's running around in NP, AK. Sounds like the trip could be fun. Good luck!

I think car and driver did a trip to Alaska in a C5 once.:D I know some major magazine did an article about it. That's the second run anyway, my dad might buy it off me.

9 more days.

Well over the weekend I put 35's on my truck. They are really tiny

compared to the 39.5 boggers I was running. Should help with towing

power and road manners though.

I am still waiting on the local dude to get a chip in to tune my truck, it

runs like butt right now. Way too darn rich. I have 7 days left in the state

of AL if all goes according to my timeline. Still packing junk, giving stuff

away, and selling some stuff. Some friends are coming over this weekend to

help me load the u-haul. So much planning involved for this scale of a

move. Gotta get my dog and cat health certificates to go through the

Canadian border.

3 more days till I start driving!

My pets now have their health certificates to cross the border. I guess you

can drug your cat with benadryl for long road trips. Vet told me, weird.

Printed off Google map directions, also got my cell phone company to let me

talk in Canada without charging me an arm and a leg. Just gotta do a little

more yard work here so I get some of my rental deposit back, and load a

u-haul on sat. Drop the K-5 at my buddies to sit for a few weeks and start

driving. Pictures soon!

My last wheeling trip in AL:

started driving.

2 days ago buddies helped me load the u-haul. My wife's cat decided to run away, so I stayed overnight in hope that it would come back. It did not. Little bastard hated me and liked to pee on my stuff. She is sad though, I am going to check the shelters when I come back for the second load. I will have more time next time.

I am surprised by the u-haul I may have gotten a little more truck than i need. I put some couch cushions in the back to sleep on for when hotels start charging stupid prices. If I baby the accelerator i am actually getting descent mileage, about 10 mpg with a car being towed at about 65. So that makes me happy.:D It's kinda cool when every few hours you get a new set of music stations. I made it to canton MO last night. Right on the border of MO/IA, I plan on crossing the Canadian border by at least tonight.

Pics are kinda boring so far just look like the highway really:

More pics. Some notes so far.

My dog slept or tried to sleep nearly the entire trip so far. I nearly got stuck in a parking lot. I have discovered that I suck at maneuvering a trailer. Gas is expensive but it is still cheaper to move yourself. St Louis traffic is just as bad as Atlanta.

Never would have guessed St. Louis traffic was as bad here. Stay safe man.

Snow storm, blizzard, whatever...

Just south of Fargo Minn. Friggin cold! Subaru's are kings in the snow! Love mine! U-haul trucks not so much, especially when they have 7000 lbs of junk in the back, towing a car carrier with the aforementioned car and stupid all season tires. So I got stuck again! I call up the roadside assistance hotline for u-haul, he explains to me that since I was the one who got it stuck I would most likely be paying for the tow. I had a few choice words for the guy, and explained it was blizzard conditions and I was not mudding. I am getting my 200 plus back when I get to Fairbanks.

So I call up my insurance company, USAA they said "Ok just send us a copy of the receipt and we will reimburse you." Tow truck shows up and I keep thinking to myself if my k5 was here there would be no issue. Luckily I have the next best thing the Subaru. Moral of the story, never leave the pavement in a u-haul.

Me being an idiot I kept all my clothes in the back of the u-haul, so guess what happens when the lock freezes? Joe does too! Luckily I had some water in the cab so that worked. The worse thing was that this all took place right near a motel. The owner some Indian dude tried like hell with his Nissan to get me out. Really awesome guy, but the tow truck ended up working. The road is closed north of fargo for the moment.

Spring weather can be tricky in the Dakotas. This was last spring break.

That's a hell of a trip... twice. Personally I'd of taken the Blazer/vette combo first, cause when you're done, you won't wanna do it again. You can always buy new house stuff :D

Good luck man! Stay safe and keep the pics commin'.
