Ok guys the wife got a job up in Alaska, north pole to be exact. She Flew up there about half a month ago. Me being the unemployed sap just out of the army I get to drive from the bottom of Alabama to north pole Alaska. Twice.
4200 miles one way.
Why drive? Shipping a vehicle costs about 4 grand at what I have priced. So I did the math why not just drive it. Besides I still have to move my house stuff. A moving company wants to charge 13k to move my stuff. Yeah no. Well I plan on taking pictures on the way both times. The First trip is going to be me in a 26 ft u-haul towing my wife's car. A Subaru impreza weighs about 3500 lbs. I have a dog and a cat which will be riding along with me. I went to college up in Fairbanks but I never had a chance to drive the highway.
The second leg is going to be my 1989 k5 blazer towing my 3300 +/- lb corvette. I have 40 inch boggers in the K5 which I am downsizing to 35 inch for towing purposes. 4:88 gears, 700 r4 overdrive and a 383 which is getting the tbi system tuned currently. Engine has about 600 miles, trans has the same. I figured if any vehicle breaks down on the way I have a spare. Sure I could sell my cars but then I would just have to buy more.
The military is reimbursing me for the u-haul load so that will help out quite a bit. I have canceled our lease on the house here in enterprise, Al. Boxed up the majority of our possessions, just waiting on a passport to drive through Canada. I just winterized 2 of my cars, the k5 is going to be winterized as soon as it is converted back to tbi. The shop is doing the reversal. I am mechanically inclined but I have a lot of other things going on.
So a few days ago I started winterizing the Subaru and corvette. Changed the mixtures of the cars to 66 percent antifreeze and 33 percent distilled water supposedly good til -55. Installed engine block heaters and battery blankets. Running synthetic oil in both cars so they should be ready. I know it's a bit overkill since it is warming up but I really don't want to worry about it on the side of the road. Here are some pictures:
I left the tails of the zip ties! Battery warmer and engine block warmer.

Some fuel cans my buddy gave me, should help me avoid the costly stations. Dog bomb!

Battery tender installed.

Did the same with the other car, which is kind of overkill. Not many corvettes running around with block heaters.

It's like 70 degree in Alabama today.
I know some major magazine did an article about it. That's the second run anyway, my dad might buy it off me.
,and saving money!
