EZO's Build Thread - Recipe for disaster... BUMPSTOPS, rough draft version 1.0

Let's not forget the flip also eliminates the need for lift blocks, a contributor to axle wrap :D

Nice build and beautiful rig by the way. I have the same stuff you have on your rig too, even the ORD engine crossmember and motor mounts. I have the 52s up front and the 56s in the rear and I don't have beadlock rims like those. Running 16" rims and 37x14 Irok bias, I wish I went 40 or 42s but that's okay, I have a buggy build coming so I'll have all the goodies on it and done right the first time. Just collecting parts right now.

Original height was stock...new height should be about 5+" lift with shackle flip and longer shackle using the stock rear springs. The shackle flip is not quite that simple...gettting the factory mount off the the hard part. It is riveted to the frame, I used a torch, grinder, and air chisel to get the rivets out. Once that was done then I had to drop the fuel tank to get the nuts on the new bolts. Other than that ... "bolt on" so to speak... ha ha

ive found the easiest way for me o remoe rivets is drill out the center then wack the reast off with a GOOD cold chisel and mini sledge

Somebody told me that trick about 5 minutes after I spent three hours grinding off four rivets on my Ranger a few years ago.

I know now though.

Another update...

Getting closer to getting the front axle under the K5!

Got my crossover steering arm, heavy duty tie rod, super tough diff cover all installed.

Got the dually hubs off. Now all I have to do is get new brake calipers and some bearings for the single wheel hubs. Should be able to get all that installed and done by Wednesday I hope...

I need to rebuild the kingpins, but I will wait until they are under the truck to do that.

EZO's Build Thread - Recipe for disaster... QUESTION!?

Sooo the front axle I have did not come with any hardware....

The question is - should I use bolts or studs on the passenger spring perch?

And they are 5/8"x11tpi correct?

Crap...I could have told you this last fall. I just went down to the hardware store and found two Grade 8 bolts that were the length I needed.

I haven't wheeled it, I don't wheel hard, and it's my opinion but I can't see why a bolt would be any worse or better than a stud myself. Other than being easier to install. When I asked about what to do with mine (stock 1 ton packs with 1" zero rate) no body even mentioned the studs to me.

Studs are better than bolts for that application.

Having said that, I (and many other people) run grade 8 bolts and have had no problems.

Okay, explain how it's better please?
No sarcasm here, I just don't know the physics of it.

(Oh yeah, saw your truck in 4-Wheel & Off-Road - congrats!)

I believe it's better because the nut is the only thing turning and therefor a better/ more accurate clamp load. With a bolt you are twisting the whole darned thing.

...or something like that.

Kinda gotcha.

Basically the phrase "don't wheel hard enough for that to matter" just flashed through my mind.

It has been a while since I have done much work or posted any updates, so here we go!

She is on her feet and rolled into driveway to do some welding and clean out of the garage.

Sorry but Im to tired to re-read the whole post..what size lift and tires are on right now[todays pic`s] and what tires do you plan to go to next? I hope you don't go to big and have to cut the hell out of your fenders...It looks GREAT right now.personally Id go 2 maybe 3 sizes bigger. probably 2 sizes.

4" in front - 5" in the rear so far. Those tires are about a 32" tire. I still have 1" zero rates and a 1" body lift to install. I don't really want to cut my fenders up a whole bunch. I have settled on running 39.5" Iroks.

I got a quick question?? In your previous pics it shows your fenders trimmed on the front and the rear cut just below the trim line.

But in your recent pics it shows no trimmed fenders but it is on your passenger side compared to your driver side in previous pics.

Why only one side cut?? afraid to take the leap?
Everybody's doing it? It's cool to cut your body up!!:haha::waytogo:

I just have not got around to trimming the passenger side yet....Oh yes there will be sheet metal coming off - gotta keep up with the cool kids.
