Finally... my 5.3 swap

Making a little progress today. My manifolds cane in so I've been cleaning them up.

Got the heat shields off, bosses cut off and ground smooth. And a good coat of VHT, we'll see how long it lasts.

What manifolds are you using? Camaro?

Ended the day dismantling my gauge cluster. Cleaned and painted the bucket with chrome spray paint to reflect more light on the gauges. Got it all back together and it looks like new!

Also ordered some LED 194 bulbs and new sockets for the cluster. Should brighten things up a bit [emoji41]

They are trailblazer SS manifolds, supposed to fit with zero issues.

I have been watching your other post (5.3 Swap Headers) regarding the trailblazer SS manifolds. I am interested to see how they fit.

Well how bout this for an update!

Picked it up today and got it torn all the way down to the long block for cleaning. Gonna clean everything, paint, reassemble and I hope to have it sitting in the blazer by the end of the weekend

It all depend on if my shift kit shows up for the transmission, definitely don't wanna do that upside down if it were in the blazer.

So stoked at this point the inside of the motor is very clean [emoji6]

And I didn't have one exhaust manifold bolt break except for one that was already like this

Gotta get this one out and order some ARP bolts for installation.

They all have broken exhaust studs lol. Mine was the same Efing one!! :haha:At least it's not flush!!!
Also, I'm running the TBSS manifolds in my '68, they clear just fine. I think, from looking at pictures, the Camaro ones hug the block a little more, pointing the collectors inward. Doesn't mater, the TBSS ones work perfect.

LOL, I think I had that same bolt broken on mine too. Again, not flush so it wasn't a big deal to get out.

I have pics of the camaro vs. truck manifolds in my thread if you want to see the difference. I'll be using the camaro manifolds on mine.

I'll be the odd man and say I didn't have a broken exhuast bolt.. But I did manage to pull a couple threads out in a location on the front of the head not used for anything.

Yep. So common that a company now makes brackets to push the manifold against the block when a stud breaks so that you don't have to replace the stud!

Not much to report today y'all. Finished scrubbing the motor and trans down and pressure washed everything. I am going to paint tomorrow, just that should keep me busy.

What are y'alls thoughts on this color scheme :
Gloss black block
Flat black exhaust manifolds
Bare aluminium heads
Light gray valve covers and timing cover.

I don't want to end up with a super dark engine compartment with no contrast. [emoji19]

I say orange is the only acceptable color to paint a Chevrolet.

I am also an opinionated asshole.

Martin

I think it would be cool to paint a modern 5.3 good old chevy orange.

I have seen a good number of orange ls swaps. They just don't look quite right to me. It also takes away from the factory look a little too much hassle for my personal liking.
