First Attempt 71 rebuild: running again!

Not really an extremely important issue to worry about right now on my truck, but I am wondering if anyone knows; does the cigarette lighter ground through direct contact with the dash, or does it ground through a wire? there appears to be 2 posts for connections....but im not certain one is an actual post or where the ground wire would tie into if that were the case.

The +12V lead is the pin at the very bottom of the cigarette housing, the surrounding "shell" is the ground.... they might have a second wire to insure that the housing gets a solid ground.

Bed repairs complete for time being

Finished up today with the back end repairs that are complete for now...; bed is all patched in, new cross sills are in, and new body mounts. Does any one know how much torque to put on when tightening the body mounts?

Next on my to do list is I need to find out where i have a broken connection with the blazer's horn, and repair the emergency/parking brake since all the cables have been removed except for the last 2 feet coming off the rear wheels.

I jumped out the horn straight to the battery and the horn itself seems to be working fine, so the issue seems to be either in the steering wheel button or the relay. I took a look at the relay, traced the green wire that goes to the horn, but I cannot find where the red wire goes/connects into the horn's button.... I popped the cap off the button and everything seems to be clean and in good condition there, but i will have to dig a little deeper to be sure i think.

Also while I was looking at the horn relay and e-brake areas I found a couple wires that are disconnected but I am not sure what they go to. The pictures are kind of vague I know, but the first one (green w/ rotted insulator) ties in just underneath the distributer it looks like (area circled in green) The second one (red and white) was just hanging down by the fuse box. Does anyone know what they could go to?

I thought that was the light under the dash, like under the passenger side. I have the same thing. Will be good to know for sure what it is.

here are some pics from my 72.

red and white wire on driver side, bulb comes on when driver door is opened:

i have a green wire on the side of my engine, assuming for a sensor, and it goes up towards the dizzy or electric choke, but I can't tell what it connects to. thought the connector looked similar to what you pictured:

hope that helps a lil.

I agree. Looks like temp sensor and under dash light. Check the driver side head for the temp sender.

Also, time to take out the old points dizzy and upgrade to HEI.

Body work is looking good.

Thanks for the replies guys. I was hoping it was for the temp sensor as mine wasn't reading last time i had the thing running.

I'd be more than happy to take out the point dizzy if I could find one for free right now haha. But unfortunately I have other priorities first, and money tied up in body parts and other items just so i'll be able to get the thing to take a sticker. One step at a time....

The bed lines arent quite perfect as I would have liked them to be, but the panels were not an exact match so I guess I am happy enough with it for now. Sometime later I'll prolly replace the whole bed, but for now it will do.

Heres a couple pics of when I totaled my truck, and my camaro, for those who like pictures

nice! I think the camaro is one of the best looking cars out there right now.

Progress

Got some more work done today. I installed a new horn and horn relay today and cleaned up the contacts that were all rusted up in the steering column; you can see what looks like a moth or some kind of bug nest that had actually made its home in between the contacts! I forgot to take the before pictures of how rusted up everything was. I often do since I go down there not certain of which task i'm going to tackle, and one thing leads to another and i forget to stop and take pictures.... but trust me when i say the internals of the horn contacts in the steering column were really rusty.

Did a couple floor patches up front as well. Two decent sized holes in the rear part of the cab area. Once again I didnt take before pictures as i kind of just jumped into repairing them without thinking after i finished the horn stuff.... I put the junk pieces i cut out back on top to give an idea though.... First two are drivers side, second two are passenger.

The next task I will have to tackle is installing the parking brake. After that I am hoping it will take a sticker so I can start working on more enjoyable tasks that I want to do rather than ones I have to do.

The only parts left over from the parking brake were the short cables coming off the rear wheels and the foot pedal assembly. Everything in between was gone. I ordered up the parts I thought I needed for the parking brake and they came in today. However, there only seems to be one cable and it looks to be a bit shorter than it should be. The weather is crap out today and looks like it is going to be all week, plus I have work the next 11 out of 12 days. Hopefully I will find some time soon to ensure I have all the right parts....

Clutch slippage

Updates: I have my truck registered now, and have been driving it a lil bit recently. I ordered all the parking brake cables from LMC but they dint line up right at all, so I'm taking it to the brake shop who says they'll take care of it next week.

New issue though. Clutch started slipping a little bit, then started slipping a lot a bit when I tried hooking my boat up to it. The pedal doesn't have any free play and engages/disengages at the very first bit of movement (when the pedal is all the way up/out). Basically all of the work the clutch is able to do right now is in the first inch or so of movement from the pedal. This is my first vehicle without a hydraulic clutch, so I am not familiar with being required to adjust it and am hoping for some pointers on what I need to do.

Also I think this only started to happen after I replaced the body mounts and think that might have potentially caused a difference in the linkage. I'd say its about an inch lower than it was before the body mount change. Would that difference in distance from the body/pedals to the tranny make a difference if the linkage wasn't adjusted to compensate? I'm hoping that an adjustment is all it will take...
