First Attempt 71 rebuild: running again!

If IIRC you'll be fine. Do you have the rear cab support? That's what the rear portion of the inner will bolt too. Looks like with that B patch panel, you need to fill in the front portion of it?

I know the Greg used that same panel (lower B), you might want to take a look in his thread to see if or how he filled in the front of it.

If you need, I'll find some more pics..

Sounds good, thanks man. Yeah I have the rear cab support, and the front portion I cut out the old piece that went down the pillar and swept into the old outer rocker panel if that's what you mean, or is that lower B pillar patch actually require a front face behind all that? I'll a look at Greg's build thread and see what I can dig up. Thanks

More progress, but it ended with frustration

Today was quite good as far as progress went for the first part. Everything was smooth sailing from cleaning up my welds on the pillar patches to finishing welding in the outer floor patch, bolting the front floor support in (which miraculously fit perfectly. I was expecting going off from other peoples threads that I was going to need to do some modifications to it.). I also made up a little patch piece for the #2 body mount support that had rotted out.

The trouble began when I was starting to try and fit the torsion box in as well as the torsion box support panel. They just did not want to line up and fit together. A lot seemed to be bumping into crappy patches that were done to the bed floor by the PO as far as the reinforcement panel went. The torsion box is being a pain I believe at least partially because of the floor support (that runs from the back to front of the cab) being in a bit of rough condition and kind of wavy. So I'm not really sure whats going on entirely with, but I had to end my day frustrated.

Anyhow here are some pictures of my progress to date for your viewing pleasure.

Here is the way that it came out when I finished mine. That is, minus the two bolts still that go into the rear cab support.

Good work on all of the rest today. :waytogo:

more stuff

Got the torsion box, torsion box reinforcement panel, and rear cab support in today. It was a real pain trying to get those things to line up right. One of the bolts going through the reinforcement panel to the B pillar got tweaked some how, and no matter what I tried I couldn't get it to go in or out. Ended up having to cut it off and make a new hole just below it. The reinforcement panel didn't sit quite right up to the cross sill, but I decided it was close enough. I think it is due to the cross sill not being perfect. For now I am just going to find a bushing and bolt it in though.

Started working on the cab floor too finally. Got it cut out, in place, tacked in, and started welding up two of the sides. No pictures for it on this post though. It was dark when I was done working last night, starting to rain, and my phone was dead so no picture. I'll update it after more work today.

looking good! that's a complicated little section to deal with for sure.

Drivers side DONE

Finished up the drivers side today finally! What a process! Finished getting the floor pan welded in, fabricated up the front of the B patch panel (not exactly to design with the original but good enough), hung the door, and with a fair amount of modification to the outer rocker, its pretty much done on that side! The outer rocker was a crappy crappy piece, had to splay it apart in several places on the front side and stitch it back together to get it to fit right and allow the door to even close. Most of the pieces I got from LMC truck I have been quite disappointed with. Once I found out about Classic Heartbeat I started ordering from them, and those ones have been much better. Unfortunately I had already stockpiled a bunch from LMC. Anyhow, here's the pics of the drivers side all together, next post will be the start of the demolition of the passengers side.

Passenger side

Now on to the demo pics of the passengers side. Bondo, Bondo, everywhere.... And rust.... And rotted holes.... and horrible horrible patching..... The first 2 pics are of my entire torsion box that I cut out. The old ones sure were a lot smaller I guess! :haha:

Didn't get a whole lot done today unfortunately. Cut out and patched the A pillar, and cut out and sized up the B pillar and torsion box reinforcement panel. Forgot to take pictures of that though. A lot of the day was spent moving my truck into the garage. There was a storm coming up so it was time to get it inside so I can keep working on it tommorrow. That was quite the process though, moving the boat trailer and everything out to make room. Was going to drive it in, then realized it seems to be that the starters solenoid is mounted on the front clip and I cant drive it without that on haha. Too much pushing.

My big progress of the day was cutting out the bottom of the cab support that runs front to back and welding in a new support. It was too far gone to try and attach the torsion box or anything to it. So that ended up taking a lot of time welding a bead that long. Used up the rest of my argon, and when i went to get it filled, my welding store was closed early, and they aren't open tomorrow. So its looking like a flux core day :doah: I hate that stuff.

First pic is my repair to the cab support, second pic is of the fly hatch we apparently had. Those are all dead flies. Crazy!

More work

Got some more accomplished yesterday. Didn't have gas for my welder really which was a bummer, so I just tried to tack as much stuff in place as possible and I can weld it in properly today. Didn't want to have to clean up a bunch of stuff from flux core. I made the cardinal sin of not measuring twice and cutting once on my outer 4 inch floor patch. Had to make a double patch out of it which I'm not to happy about. It will come out okay, just more work welding and grinding.

Ultimately got the outer 4 inch floor patch in, rear cab support, front cab support, and torsion box reinforcement panel in. So fairly productive day given the circumstances.

Since I was out of welding gas and nothing much left I was able to do on the rust repair side of things, I decided I might as well investigate why my air fan and heat didn't work when I bought the rig last winter. Turns out it had been converted to a wool and acorn factory....

Got 2 new seats today for 250 bucks. Recently reupholstered w/ real leather. They're an 88-98 series so I will have to do a little adapting to make them bolt in, but they were just too nice to pass up.

Could someone send me a picture of their outer rocker and where it welds in? I've gotten myself confused on where it should be in. I've lined it up with the door on but there still seems like two possibilities. A top view looking down at where the door sills go would be great!

Progress update; Passenger floor finished up, patched the bump/rise on the drivers side where the seat mounts that was all rusted out. Feels good to have floors again. Also touched up and cleaned the heat exchanger/fan housing, and some resto work to the center console as well. Did some work with the kick panel vents as well but no pics of that yet.
