What transmission do you got in there? Is that a 3 speed?

Thanks for the compliment. Yeah its a 3 speed. Used to be on the column, but the PO changed the linkage to put it on the floor.
 
Thought so,kinda rare to see.

Yeah I'm not a huge fan of it, I don't like the gearing of the 3 speed and I especially don't like the hack job they did swapping it to the floor. Eventually I'll be going to a 4 speed
 
Been busy and in a push to get this truck road ready for the winter, so i havent done a ton of before and after pics, but heres some updates.... repaired the rotted out vents going from the cowel to the cab so i wont freeze (too much) over the winter. Finished up the floor pans and patches for seat bolting area andsprayed with a rubberized coating for now.

New rear drum brake cylinders, new front to rear brake lines for the drum brakes, new master cylinder and power booster. Swaps went smooth, only struggle was getting the brake lines in place.

Cleaned up the horn pieces inthe steering column, put the steering wheel back on and tossed the new seats in. Was hoping to fire it up by now, but when i was putting the front clip back on i punctured the radiator on the fan blades :doah: that sucked. So i got a new one on order for tomorrow.

Getting close to being on the road for winter before i tear back into it this spring! And i really like the look of the new seats, so overall im pretty pumped :woot:

On the road

Well she passed the safety inspection and is now road legal and back on the road again! :woot: Time to start brainstorming on what I want to tackle next spring and stockpiling parts since I am going to have to rely on it this winter while the Camaro goes away.

I want to re-do the bed this spring. I know they don't make an actual repro for the Blazers, but has anyone bought the short bed and cut a section out to make it fit? How did the cross sills line up?

Also thinking the suspension will need to be swapped out next as it is sagging and I want a little bit of a lift. Prolly just 3-4 inches. Any suggestions?

No definitely leave them up. My first replacement I was refering to was actually the bed floor, but I might end up having to do one of the inner bed sides as well, so that will definitely be a good reference for me. Looks like it came out good man.
 
Well I got my winter project for the blazer and started in on it yesterday. 1985 350 motor with a sm465 transmission and an np205 xfer case; whole kit and kaboodle with a set of headers for 400 bucks.

Tear down has been pretty decent so far, everything come apart pretty well with the exception of 2 bolts holding the right exhaust manifold on. Been torching them and using pB blaster, but no luck so far. :confused: Not sure if i should just break them off, drill, tap and get some heli coils tossed in....

Most things went well tearing it down so far. Got the intake, flywheel, and left head off without a problem. Just a couple things have been a little more frustrating....

The guy I bought it from said it was pulled just a month or so ago and has been sitting under cover since. However I was having some difficulty turning it, and was hoping to attribute it simply to the strength of the valve springs, but then I unfortunately found this nice pool of water and rust in the #2 cylinder (3rd pic). :doah: Hopefully it won't be to bad to loosen it up.

Also still having trouble with the frigging 2 exhaust manifold bolts (last pic). I've hit them with penetrant and a torch about a hundred times now. They have until tomorrow then, they're being torqued until they break free or break off. Any tips or tricks of the trade would be appreciated though.

Drill or cut the head off to remove the manifold. Then add a pair of vice grips on them to turn.

Edit: are those bolts or nuts? Those might be harder to cut off.
 
Kerosine on those pistons may help un-seize them if they are stuck/sticking. Pour about 1/2 cup in, let it sit overnight, it should seep past the rings. Repeat if needed. I forget exactly how it works but it is a very "thin" liquid which penetrates or something like that.

They seem to be some strange type of bolt with the head halfway down. The rest isn't threaded, so that's my guess. Weird huh?:dunno: I'm torn between cutting them like you said so I can expose the end in the block and hit it with penetrant, but I'm not sure that vice grips will give enough torque if the bolt head wouldn't. However, if I torque until I snap the heads, I'm not sure where they would shear, probably flush with the engine block so I wouldn't be able to hit directly with penetrant! AHHH the decisions!:doah:

Yeah I've already done that, i believe it works basically like a penetrant/solvent; wicks down and loosens/busts rust, but it also lubricates better. Hopefully it isn't stuck too bad and won't take much work to free.
 
If you're driving this in the winter, I will say get the best ignition parts you can. Makes a HUGE difference over the crappy generic replacement stuff during cold starts.
 
Some more good progress today. Finally got the exhaust manifold off, man that was a pain in the ass. Couldn't break em cause the heads were too rusted/rotted. Couldn't use a cutting wheel cause of where they were located. Tried torching them but they were seized up inside too much as well. Ended up using a wedge to pry the manifold out enough to slip my sawzall in there, and finally cut them off.

Found more nasty water and rust in cylinders on the other side as well which made me unhappy. Tried turning it again it was stuck pretty good. Soaked it in kerosene all day and by the end of it, I managed to get it broken free and cleaned it all up.

Took apart the cylinder heads on both sides and took out all the intake and exhaust valves without a hitch.

Started working on pulling off the harmonic balancer, but it is proving to be stuck on there fairly well. I'll have to work on that some more when I'm done with this stretch of six nights in a row at work coming up. :doah:

The new (to me) transmission already has a PTO set up on it, though it is currently rear facing. I'm wondering how plausible it might be to flip it around and use it to run a winch in the front? Thought that might be a cool feature, anyone else have some thoughts or have a PTO driven winch set up before?
 
PTOs aren't too common, so I'm not sure what it would cost to find the parts and add one... :thinking:

It would be a cool item due to its rarity, but it may not be ideal in "real world" situations. If the truck is stuck and the engine won't run, a PTO winch becomes useless.

It would be cool to use the PTO to run a log splitter (or tubing bender) though!!!

Yeah I definitely think it would be cool, and the more I think about it the more I want to utilize it since its already there. The only time I really see it not being useful is if my truck was flipped or submerged. After looking around it does seem like they're pretty hard to find though. I'm not sure if there is a good straight shot for running the shaft up to the bumper either.

I'd still be happy and think it cool to use it for something else instead though. It would be badass to utilize it for a log splitter you suggested.... Now I have to come up with a reason to convince my girlfriend that I need to split logs.....hmmm
