Flyin Rat Garage

Dave how are you getting 200A out there? DTE wouldn't run a second meter for me because I only have one address. My neighbors have a u driveway and they got a second meter for their shop because the have a separate address for the shop.

Hmmm, will need to talk with my brother about it....and maybe Consumers power co.
Maybe my assumption is mis-informed. I did ask about a separate meter when the location was different and was told the rates would go up as it wouldn't be considered residential????
Stay tuned

You can get a new meter box with a main breaker. For residential I know DTE only does 100 or 200A residential service. So assuming you have 200 already, you would have a 200 A main meter box with breaker, and two separate 200A for the house and for the shop. That may not be code, and would lead to the main tripping if you had all the AC on at once, and say welder and compressor going.

i know my boss at work has a out building he turned off and removed meter cause it was 400 month for hookup and meter with hardly any use .

the house he lives in 100ft away is around 100 per month with full power use day to day . . .

go figure.

My shop has a separate meter than the house and they are right next to each other. The shop does have a different address though.

They do charge you extra to have the second meter because it's considered commercial being a pole barn but the fee isn't hardly anything. My shop electric bill is 10-25 bucks a month so far.

I'm not sure how you go about getting a different address for the shop though as my place was like this when I bought it.

My brother is coming over to measure the load I can generate right now, we'll go from there for what requirement we' ll shoot for.

I plan to use 1/2 of this barn to rent out (hopefully) for storage and make a little money to help pay for the building, If I can pull that off it will pay for itself in 8 years. That is a lofty goal, and I might need more of that space as time goes on, but I hope to start out renting some space.

storage units in my area are about $125 and up for a 10x20 unit.
I'll probably go for $100/car, hoping to get 4 cars in there.

yeah, its a bit crazy like everything else it seems like. you can store outdoors for $45/mo though...wtf?

got the poles, concrete, perlins, girts, truss headers and hardware today...should be drilling some holes over the weekend.
got the trusses in a couple weeks ago.
