For those that have had both in a truck, BBC or SBC?

Ahh, sorry missed the TPI. Yeah, that could be done, it'd be some work to get it to work right, but possible.

I think the big question for me is, the original question, is driving around a BB that much better than a SB?

I've always like the idea of a giant killer stroked sb. Both can make huge numbers but the question is which can do it cheaper?

of course i could be a devils advocate here and if youre just after torque..... you could always swap a 4-53T into the bay. or, if youre really nuts, find an aluminum block 6v53T military Detroit Diesel. Throw a 5 speed spicer manual behind it, and youve got 700+ lbsft of torque. and sweet mary mother of god if youve ever heard one of those spool up to max rpm.... and you could even jake brake it for going down hill......

course im just a diesel nut... i LOVE my 6.2L, and have been inspired by the heath performance diesel 300hp 6.5TD. if only i had the money to act on such inspiration ;)

If you end up buying a used motor, look it over REALLY good! My dad bought two 454s in a row and upon tear down we found both the blocks had issues. One had a crack and the other had a leaking sleeve

Just go buy the 502 and that way you can say yes I have a BBC 502. How many people can really say that? That would be a nice feeling:D:D

Do that and then slap these on

6.0L would include EFI if you get the 'puter and wiring. :deal:

Of course you'd need to modify it a bit, VATS and all, but it shouldn't cost too much.

i know where a boat is w/a I/O 496 w/ the volvo penta injection for $3000...i been thinking about gettin it and puttin the bbc and injection system in my k5 and putting my carbed 350 in the boat...any problems any1 see's? i like the idea b/c the penta contols just the motor & is used to rough conditions & all i have to do is put a marine carb and exhaust manifolds on my sbc and buy a set of headers for the 496, which already has a flywheel for my sm465,..any1 see any problems i am missing?

ehhh

braggin rights have been passed on to the 572's or 632's, who can say that! i know of several 502's around here both in street rides and the mud bugs.

on a side note, did you see that guy grin the 1st time he blurped that diesel in that video..that thing sounded like a diegrinder! what is that engine and what do they come in?

I like diesels too, I have one in my '97 with the 6.5ltd. It's got high mileage and still running strong, great motor. I wouldn't do that to my poor little Dana44 though, the 1000lbs+ of diesel weight above it would kill it.

6.2L diesel only weighs in around 700lbs.... and my 10 bolt is surviving just fine under the weight, with 33in tires. but again, im not very hard on the truck. But its a moot point if youre looking at those power levels. A 6.2L does many things well, but more than double its original hp rating reliably is not one of them. I still am a fan of the 4-53T swaps though... those do however weigh over 1000lbs.

for the hp rating youre looking at, a vortec headed, tpi small block 350 with a reasonable cam and headers will do that without breaking a sweat. Reallly, with vortec heads if you dont hit 400hp, youre really not trying. You could easily get an R code 350 from a wrecked tahoe or suburban or silverado, strip it down, put it back together to make sure everything is good to go, throw in a performance cam, headers, and youd have your performance numbers on the cheap. you certainly dont need a big block to get 350hp and 400lbsft of torque.

once youre talking about a 383, the same combo will probably hit 400hp 500ftlbs of torque reliably, and with less weight over your "dainty" dana 44 up front ;)

Yeah, I know, your not wrong. Those numbers were minimum though mind you, I'd like to do more, but min 350/400.

I have kinda made a decision, if I can do the fulie BB for 7500 or less (either new or fully gone through), I'm doing it. If not, it's the fulie SB. I've found some of the major components of the ramjet 502 for half their cost, if I can do that with a couple more, I can do it. The ones I found so far are real GMPP (the same p/n), so. Within a couple weeks, I'll have my answer.

I have both and have built and driven both, and in my opinion, nothing can replace the torque and gut feeling of a big block. A big block can make any vehicle feel like it is lightweight. Big blocks rule. My mileage went from about 10 to about 9 from the small block to big block.

In my opinion, it depends on what you're doing with it. I have had both. I like my BBCs for the tow rig or truck pulling, but my other hobby is rock crawling. I feel a SB is better suited for that since it's lighter smaller and you are usually in low range low gear so you don't need the power. I have a 12.5:1 427 on the stand that I am tempted to put in my K5 crawler, but I don't want to deal with the broken pieces that will result.

no JAKE. Of course I have a K30 and it can't be one without a BBC.

Well, the BBC was going to cost way too much in a fulie version. So I went with the RamJet 350.
I think she'll do just fine. Of course, a BBC would be better, but, this engine has far more HP and torque than one of these trucks, even the BBC, came from the factory. I think I'll be quite happy with it.

Yep 383. Had one and loved it 'til it broke (my fault). Almost same $$ to build and extra torque comes in handy!
