FullSize S10 Bogger/Mud Racer

Got back on it today after taking a few days away from it.

Fired the truck up and the alternator still a wasn't doing anything so I changed that out. Will pull the other one apart and give it a good cleaning and check for burned/shorted parts.

I kind of expected it to happen when I put the slightly smaller radiator in....it slid out out its upper mount. It didn't really go anywhere, just rested against the front wall of the box. It probably would have been fine except it was a few inches away from the fans now. Pulled that back and put in a couple pieces of tubing to stop it from moving again.

My cousin and uncle have been coming over quite a bit latley to work on his (my cousins) truck. I was complaing about how much mud had gotten into the box, litteraly inches worth, and that I wanted to find a tonneau cover. My uncle happend to have one from something he owned in the past. Either a long bed Ranger or Dakota. Said I could have it. It is barely wide enough...and I think I got it on there off center, but it's on there. I had to shorten the side rails some. I picked up some more snaps to put in where it folds over the end. Tucked the extra into the sides and put a snap on the corners. Once I get the ones on the end rail it should take the wrinkle out. Not sure if I'm going to trim the excess or leave it.

Over the next few days I'll start blocking off some of the holes in the grill/cowl area.

You leaving the tailgate off to allow the rad to vent?

Yes, for a few reasons. I have the tailgate that matches the box. I'm leaving it off for weight and to let the air escape. With the fan on you can feel a strong breaze coming out from under it. The other reason I'm not using it is....a tree fell on it and crushed the top down pretty good. Not sure I could even get it on there and close it.

Edit: I've thought about cutting the outter skin off and putting that on there, but it's hard enough for me to get up in there without having to take something else off or climb over it.

Finshed off the bed cover tonight. Added the snaps for the rear crossbar. Had one get away from me and is slightly out of line with the others....guess that's what I get for free handing it. Got the wrinkle out of it, nice and tight now (Ha!).

Quick pic of the tailgate. It might go on, but the right side latch is tweaked.

I haven't forgotten about this thing since I brought the Jimmy home. Just been buys with other things around the house.

Today I put some conveyor belt material in the front openings and under most of the motor. Should help keep some of the mud/water out of the engine bay. Just used some self tapping screws to hold it on. The bottom piece goes from the front crossmember, then about 18" back. I could go back about 6 more inches, but after that I'd get into the header tubes. I still might add a few pieces in the wheel wells to cover the small gaps that are there.

Plan on taking this thing out Saturday for a few hours. Then, in 3 weeks we have our local bog here in town.

That's looks like a decent material. And easy to deal with and repair.

It's pretty thick, 3/16"-1/4" probably. Multiple layers, nice and heavy. My uncle gets it from the sugar beet factory he works at. Have a few rolls of it....probably close to 100' of it. It's also what I used to protect the hoses coming off the motor heading to the back.

My uncle that gave me the jimmy put some in the back to protect the floor. His was textured. Really tough stuff, and a lot heavier than it looks. That should do a good job.

Got a few hours of run time on it today. Ran great, didn't really break anything.

Made it out to the pit a little after 2 today. Broke the truck before I even got it off the trailer. Fired it up and was letting it warm up, shut it off so I could unhook the straps and put the ramps on the trailer. Went to fire it back up and the starter just made some horrible noises. Crawled under it and couldn't really see anything amiss. Pulled the inspection cover off and 3 pieces of the starter nose cone fell out. Whole front of it broke off. Asked around to a few people to see if anyone had an extra, no-go. Ended up getting a ride from my cousin to an Autozone. Picked up one of the mini gear reduction style ones from a Vortec truck.

With that on there, it fired right up and even spun over better....so I guess it turned out okay. Would have rather had it happen at home where I have 14 extra's, but I'm not going to complain too much.

My first pass through the pit I went right through. Had a little bog when I hit second gear and almost came to a stop. Motor recovered and I pulled through just fine. We did get some video of this run. Next few passes I made it all the way to the end and got hung up on some ruts or something, I was trying a different line, and even though I had just gotten through, I was still getting stuck. Last pass of the day I tried launching off the 2step. That worked almost too well because I had so much speed I had a wave come up and flood out the carb. Let the truck sit for about half an hour then loaded it onto the trailer. Ended up using the winch because I wanted to pull the carb off and clean it out.

Came home, pushed the truck off and gave it a quick hose down. Either tomorrow or Monday I'll really wash it. Think I'll spray out the inside this time too.

The two videos we got are of the same run. First one is from the outside, Rico took this one. Second one, my cousin Garret got, that one is from inside the truck. This is the run where I bogged down some after hitting second, recovered and went all the way out. Sound quality might not be the best.

Edit: First one isn't wanting to upload...so might have to wait on getting that one in here,

Dude, that thing sounds kinda pissed off!

Thanks....I think. Lol I'm happy with how it runs for what I have into it. One thing I have noticed is when this motor was in the K5, I could put it in gear and spin up to 7000rpm pretty eaisily. Now, with the automatic behind it, it only wants to go to 6000 or so. Probably need to play with the timing a little more to get it back up there again. Also have a bigger carb to try on it, but I'm waiting on a rebuild kit and jets to show up before I do that.

Still working on getting the other video to load.

Found a couple more videos. Still having probelms with getting the one of my first one to load.

Kind of a lame unloading off the trailer one.

This one was my second run at the pit. Tried the deeper line and got hung up in the hole at the end.

Getting the truck ready for next weekend. It's our local fair and they usually have a bog, but this year they are doing side by side mud drags. Reading through the rules, says I need drive shaft loops front and rear. Now, most places I've been have had this rule as well, but usually don't enforce it. But after watching someone dig their driveshaft out of the pit last weekend...I figured it'd be a good idea to get some installed. And depending on how the competition looks next weekend (my class has $500 for first), I might call them out on this rule and try making them enforce it.

Didn't take any in process pictures, just the finished one. Started with some 1 1/4"x1/4" flat bar and bent it around an old rotor for the bottom "U". Cut some 1 1/4x1/4" angle iron for bolt tabs at the top. Welded the tabs to one of the crossmembers in the frame after drilling some bolt holes in the two pieces. Put in the top of the loop after I had it mounted, probably didn't need that part, but it'll help the structure hold together in the even I actually need it. Might go back and add some diagonal braces off to the sides as well. It does the job, holds the driveshaft off the ground if either end comes undone.

Before I started on that, I put some new plugs in the motor, topped off the radiator (forgot to turn the fans on last time and lost some coolant) and put a new accelerator pump in the carb (old one was dried out and torn when I cleaned the carb). Over the next few days I'll work on getting a front loop installed and it should be good to run.

Had some time last night to get the front driveshaft loop made. Bent up another hoop, this one a complete circle, but when I went to put it where I wanted it...I ran into problems. I couldn't push it too far forward without getting into the header, too far back and it was into the transmission pan. The solution I came up with was to make kind of a triangle shape (at least that's what I was going for when I was hitting it with the BFH). The top of it tucks up by the transmission pan, have about 1/4" clearance. Ran some flat stock back to the crossmember to mount it to another piece of angle iron. I probably should run another brace up to the frame (behind the shackle) at some point. Was running out of gas with the welder towards the end, otherwise I would have done it now.

Not a very good picture, but I have some clearance between the loop and the pan.

Went out tonight after the sun went down (been in the upper 80's low 90's with 80% humidity) and hooked up my neutral safety switch. Another one of those things most places require you to have....was planning on hooking it up anyway though. Tomorrow I should be able to get it fired up and dial the carb in after having it apart last week.
