Got any cool tools lately?

So a few years ago my father found this lathe from 1957, it cost as much as three 57 Chevy's back in the day!

I bought it for $800, then sold a dial gauge off of it for $200.

I added a quick change tool holder and also bought a DRO for it but haven't had time to install that.

I use a VFD to control the old 11A 240V 3 phase "Allis Chalmers" motor, I didn't even know they made electric motors before I saw that.

Anyway, I have been using it for projects but more recently I cleaned it again and painted it with 3M industrial paint. Turned out not too bad...

Any tips on moving that, may have one of my own inboun?. Not nicely vintage like yours but roughly same size.

I actually went and bought a used Crown pallet jack for $150 to move it in my shop, its rated to lift 5000 lbs and with the correct wooden blocks I can move it anywhere on the concrete. I trust a used Crown over a new throw away. The pallet jack has proven useful for moving other items around in the shop too, crate engines, freight in/out, etc.

To get it on/off the trailer required a fork lift, my fathers skid loader could not lift it without tipping over.

That is something I would love to have.

Alice Chalmers used to have a large electrical division and produced a lot of stuff in the industrial and utility industry. Motors, transformers, large circuit breakers etc

A lot of old ONAN generators used Allis Chalmers engines.

I use it more than I thought I would. In fact, I used it first to repair itself in a way.

It came with a Morse #3 live center but it was broken and required a special fastener to hold it together. I started thinking, great, where am I going to get one of those....then I realized, I can make one now, so I did.

I also bought 3 boxes of both used and new mill/lathe tooling off marketplace for $200. Then proceeded to sell about 10% of the huge bits and taps for around $500, and kept the rest, so I got paid to buy quite a bit of mill/lathe tooling.

Wife's uncle passed. Picked up mini mill and mini lathe on the cheap along w/ a bunch of other stuff.

Gonna be picking up radial drill press and noodling over picking up full size lathe on the CHEAP. It's been sitting unused for 6yrs and not sure if there was a problem with it or maint but the cover was left off of the belt and primary gears.

Any thoughts on this?

Also had another question.. Is there anything a chopsaw can do that a mini band saw cant? Looking to maybe get rid of chopsaw to make some space.

New to me drill press

Had a closer look at the big lathe. Looks like the major parts are there and everything seems to be clean and rust free. Accessories should be there, but not visible as the garage looks like a whirlwind went through - so stuff like rest assy arbors are missing. Could add up if not found. Could spin/move everything by hand. No power at the moment.

May go for it, but need to make some space in the Garage - have to sell a motorcycle...

Looks like my drill press, cool! I have a 3/4 hp 3 phase motor for it I'm planning on upgrading soon.

I still have my chop saw, but rarely use it...I too have a few bandsaws that took over chop saw duties. I keep mine around for construction jobs.

Abrasive chop saws SUCK. I wouldn't use one if it was given to me.
Loud, stink, never cut straight.
Now like a steel bladed one like the evolution or something, yeah. I'll use that. Own one and love it

Pre ordered this about a month ago, but I need it tomorrow.
Will probably never need it again lol

I have the SWAG table for my Milwaukee bandsaw and I use that thing quite a bit, more often than my dry cut chopsaw. The dry cut saw you have to be careful because if you abuse a blade its over $100. The bandsaw blades are under $10. I bolted it to a bench.

I had the swag table but I wasn’t impressed back then. Things have changed and I’d probably use it a lot nowadays.

I’m probably gonna cancel my order though. Sometimes my shear brilliance amazes even me.
