Got me a Dana 60 *INSTALLED*

The inners from a 89-92 Dodge axle should be non-neckdown. The spring perches are a little different. It DOES matter. We put a Dodge 60 in my buddies 80K5, and we just pushed the springs in. It rode like crap. He trimmed 1/4" off the bushings and added a spacer on the other side of the springs and it rode much better.

If yours is neckdown, then someone swapped the shafts. It can be hard to tell the year since it will only read "10 9 8" on the tube, so could be a 78 or 88....But after 1980 I think everything got the non-tapered....

they have a smaller diameter right after the splines, creating a weak point, don't know about the shortening.

OOOPS...;)

I just dropped the carrier off at the machine shop to have them press off the old bearings. I also asked them to remove the bearing from another pinion so they can reuse the oil slinger when they press my new bearing onto the 4.10 pinion. Once I get those back I'll start on setting up the gears.

No, no pictures. Sorry. It is easy though. Trim 1/4" off the bushing on each side and add the cut piece or washer to the other side to space it out. I know he spaced his shackle out with with a thick washer.

Ran into a setback... The guy I bought the axle from "threw in" 4.10 gears which I was planning on setting up during my rebuild. Well, they're for a 14 bolt, not a dana 60. They looked fine, in good condition, but the ring gear is 10.5" in diameter -- on second thought it might also be a D70. The pinion is almost identical to a dana 60 pinion, but the shank is slightly larger, and my bearing won't fit.

So I'm on the lookout for D60 4.10 gears now.

I've also been trying to figure out if this is actually a D61. Pirate's Dana 60 bible says the axle tube would be 3.5", but my micrometer says 3-1/8". The BOM says it's a 61, and it does in fact have 3.07 gears (which is why the D61 was made).

After doing some reading, I should be able to drop dana 60 4.10 gears in without getting a new carrier (I'm running a 3 series) or ring gear spacer. Anyone know?
