Got me a Dana 60 *INSTALLED*

Thin the making compound out more, still to thick. Needs to be real thin.

I was thinking I gotta make it thicker... It's a little sloppy at the moment. Anyhow, I'll be trying to finish this up tonight or tomorrow, so I'll get more patterns posted.

Try to get it the consistency of water colors, maybe a little thicker. You want it thin enough on the gears so it does not squish and smear it self everywhere. You want it to almost remove itself where the gears make contact. I just got done setting up a 14 bolt for the first time and this is what I learn.

OK, got some time this evening to run some more patterns... I took 38377K5's advice and made the pinion a little shallower. It's about 10 thou shallower than the first set of pics, and 20 thou shallower than the second round:

EDIT: posted the wrong pics.

Looking good to me so far, maybe bring it deeper by 5 thou?

Moved the pinion deeper by 5 thou, adjusted backlash a couple times to get this:

Looking pretty close... I've read that the root side of the mark should not be a sharp line. Is that true? If so, how would I adjust to fix that?

Pattern in post 64 looks good, I'd run it.

Pattern in post 65 is too deep.

OK, I think I'm done for the evening, but perhaps tomorrow I'll bring the pinion back 5 thou again and see if I can replicate the pattern, making sure all shims and parts are clean of dust. Then I'll run a thorough backlash check and run multiple patterns.

I think the axle will weigh half as much once I've knocked all the dirt, rust, and grease off. :doah:

I'll be happy if the axle is done by Christmas.

Tell me about it... I spent the last month just getting parts and cleaning the damn thing. Assembly basically took me a week.

did your 60 come with those exact spindle nuts? Those look like a rear 60 spindle nuts to me.

Yeah, it came with these. It's a dodge axle, so that may be why. I only have the inner nut hand-tightened at the moment. I've debated getting some of the other style spindle nuts, but I think I like the idea of the socket wrapping around the nut instead of keying into it.

OK, those hex nuts suck. I can't get the lockwasher tab bent over the outer nut, so I tried a spare set of 14bolt lockwasher style spindle nuts... fits perfect! Also, now I only need one spindle nut socket for the whole truck. :D

I'm doing the exact same thing you are doing right now and I'm in Loveland. I'm having issues with the brakes right now though. What type of banjo bolts do you have? 10mm or 7/16th/? I'm thinking I have a dodge axle as well, and probly a 61 cause I have 3.07s...
