So i got the cable and disk from aldlcable.com. The problem is i dont think the disk jives with the instructions and i dont think that i have downloaded the proper drivers. Im running windows vista and i think thats whats messing me up. Any tips on how to get the usb cable to work with winaldl and the other various programs?

There aren't any drivers. Just plug in the cable and open up the winaldl program and read the setup instructions. You might need to change a setting related to com ports in that program.

When i open up winaldl it pops up a window thhat says something like "no COM1 port" or something.

Yea, there's a setting somewhere in there that lefts you try other com ports. I don't have my computer available to find out which one though. There should be an instructions.txt file (or similar name) that tells you what to do. Just make sure to plug in the cable before opening the program.

Ok. I got instructions with the cable and it does say to go into settings and then hardware and change something but i think it was made for something other then vista because it doesn't match up to what happens on my computer and i end up dead ending some point.

Have you seen this one?

Scroll down to the bottom, and it mentions Vista.

Somewhere in that program it lets you select which COM port to use.
And that PDF helps you figure out which one it is, and makes sure that Vista recognizes it correctly.

I have a USB cable and winALDL and i'm running Vista and don't have any issues. The com port thing you will have to change until you find one that it likes.

EDIT: I just checked and mine uses COM3. Once the program is opened click configuration and change the COM port setting. Default is COM1, you just need to click the up/down arrow until the error goes away and it says OK.

Got it. Will report back tomorrow(today now) with results. THanks guys! REALLY hoping this will help with my bad idle issue...

So im out here in the truck right now. Changed the port to com 3 and im still not getting any data. The error message went away but i still get no readings...Does the truck have to be started? Shouldnt i be able to see most info with the truck just in run?

Well, its for sure that some of the data is only going to be there when its running, so crank it and see.

I saw on one of those sites where different years or models used different pins on the connector for data. You may have the wrong cable.

And just to recap, it should go like this right? plug in the cable to the usb port and the diagnostic port, then open winaldl right?

From the site you got your cable from....

Some older cars (such as early TPI's like GM 1227165 ECM, 1986-89 5.0 and 5.7 V8's) will require a 10Kohm resistor to be plugged in between pins A and B on the 12 pin ALDL connector in order to put the car into "ALDL mode" and have the serial data start flowing. We provide a 10Kohm resistor with our cable.
