Grandpa’s Blazer gettin fixed up…

Papa is fixing up grandpa’s ole Blazer
Help. Front drive axle issues.

So pulled them off pressed out u-joints with penetrating oil and deployed the torch… good news got them apart. Bad news bent the ears in the process. I can get pass side together but only 2 clips will go in. Other side tried to put u-joint in the “good” inner shaft only to find it is bent too just enough you can’t get ujoint into the pocket with the caps off.

Anyone have a good set of stock drive axles or know wheee I can get a set?

It is the Dana44 10-bolt

is it a Dana 44 or 10 bolt? the outer shaft is the same between them; the inner shaft is different. here are the shafts on RockAuto

Both. Found outer at local Orileys but don’t have inners.

if your counterman is halfway competent he should be able to order it for you. they have them at Summit

Nice guy on the phone. Had me counting splines and confirming measurements to assure proper fitment. He was surprised a 78 had the Dana44 he said they stopped that and went to the GM 10 bolt. Anyway good price and free shipping. Thanks to you all for the help. Local counter help leaves much to be desired at the retail parts level.

Dumb request. So I took a lot of photos. But as I am putting the front end suspension and steering back together. I thought I knew how the sway bar goes in but I am having a brain fart. Can anyone send me some pics of the way the sway bar gets bolted in to springs and cross member. Please. I know this is a noobie request but I officially turn a senior citizen breakfast person this month. Please just roll with it.

Dennys is good, they have great customer service.

Lesson to be learned is DO NOT use a press for u-joint changes or a vise .

Learn how to do them with a vise to hold and a 4lb hammer .

The ends bolt to the sides of the spring plates (that the U-bolts pass through), like this:

There are 4 holes in the cross member under the radiator that the bushings mount on. They are on the straight part of the swaybar, just inside the 2 large bends. This picture is the ORD bar, but the bushing mount is like stock.

Thanks. That helps a lot. So I wasn’t crazy and it seems to need some muscle to get it to reach those brackets. Wait I had both brackets bolting from the outside, driverside bolts to inside of springs not outside. Huge difference. If I am reading the pick correctly.

Don’t know about that. Even torching and dosing with penetrating oil would not budge. Machines said sometime they friction weld in there and can’t do by hand. IDHK but his machine went to 31000lbs plus with red hot steel before broke free. Then it popped like a gunshot and moved 1/8”

But, I will have new axles, bearings, seals, bushings, etc and fully serviced front end now. IDK

Guess good thing.

am i the only one here thinking ....... what is a sway bar on a c/k truck thats lifted ?
If it's lifted, the stock sway bar doesn't usually fit right, but a set of disconnects solves the geometry problem.
