Griff's thread about nothing in particular.

Another thing I'd like to add to the list of plans for the truck I don't yet own, I'd like to do an 8 ft stepside, But that might be next to impossible to find.
I know Diesel4Me and Campfire both have them, but as far as seeing them in person, I've only ever seen two, both white C20's, one a 67, the other an 84. Both of them in amazingly good condition, and both for almost $20K.

But that might be something that only works out if the truck I find needs a bed.

Well, they are out there, but you're right about them being more difficult to find. Finding mine was a fluke in that the local school board just happened to have dropped off a low-rust '82 C20 step-side at the local junkyard. Which supplied the framework required to resurrect the blue sheet metal that my folks had had sitting around for 35 years.

The '82 sheet metal, nearly complete (I only used the cross members & running boards), was sent off to the crusher when I couldn't find a buyer interested. That was a bit of a sad day, as I was confident I'd eventually meet someone wanting one. :(

FWIW, I share your thought that 6' beds are silly. Why bother having a truck if you can't put things in the back? :dunno:

I've seen maybe four or five 8 foot stepside beds, and almost all were in equally rusted condition as mine is or worse...the few that weren't were on a '67 C20 and a early 60's K10--the old beds seem to resist rot better-(and I like the cut out fender for the side mounted spare tire on the earlier beds, and the pointed rear part on the fenders-)..good luck finding one any good, especially up this way..

I'm not too fond of my 8' bed--with a tool box taking up 2 feet up front and it being only 50" wide, its rather useless for hauling a lot of things like a lawn tractor ,a fridge,etc...I may end up putting my flat bed on it I saved off my '77 GMC..I could fit 3 lawn tractors in that bed,it has no wheel tubs..

There was one minty truck on craigslist a few years ago exactly like mine--only it was an '84,had the 6.2,TH400,NP-208,8 foot stepside bed,--even the same apple red/maroon color--it was a former chevy dealership's "shop truck" they used mainly for plowing their lot and fetching parts...if I remember right it was priced over 8K..

Like this one? :pimp:

Yup..just like that..:thumb:

I have thought about chopping my rear fender like that so I can get the spare tire out of the bed, save space----both rear fenders are rotted around the gas tank doors and the drivers side has a nice imprint of a telephone pole in the rear of it anyway,so it's not like I'd be ruining a good fender..but I think I'd do it to the passenger side, since I "deleted" the fuel tank on that side, and it would be safer to get at the spare on the right side, away from traffic...never understood why GM put it on the left side--other than maybe the fact it might block your vision and create a blind spot on the right side..

I used to see a sweet rust free stepside bed ,a short one though, sitting in a guys yard for decades not far from my house, painted a drab gray color.....stopped one day when I saw him out in his yard and asked if he'd sell it--said "Nope--thats the rear half of my dad's old '64 C-10,I made it into a trailer,to haul my trash to the dump.."

It's gone now,so maybe he did sell it,or moved,I dont know..but I bet it was worth 500+ bucks, being in minty shape..

It does create a noticeable blind spot. I wouldn't want it on the passenger side. But it's nothing you couldn't get used to with a good mirror on that side. Now that I have sideboards on my rig it really doesn't matter, rear visibility is pretty limited. :rotfl:

That's the story on my bed. My folks used it for dump runs for years, until the crossmembers, bed strips, and wooden floor all rotted away and it wasn't usable any more. And then it sat for a while until I decided that its sheet metal was in better shape than the '82 I parted out.

It was a rather spur-of-the-moment decision, but I'm really glad I kept the heirloom bed instead of the '82. The differences are minor aside from the spare tire holder. But I'm really pleased with how it turned out. :thumb:

I'm also glad that the parts are bolt-on compatible. Even the wiring plug matched (though I did replace it due to age).

And to think that I wasn't looking for a step-side, and I wasn't thrilled with the reduced cargo space. But I like it now. :)

Well, Monday I'm going to look at this.

74 K20, Brand new crate 350, less than 10,000 miles (says he has paperwork) TH400 with supposedly the same mileage, and NP203 with lock out hubs. Says the only thing the truck really needs is both tanks replaced.

I knew the grille was wrong, and I said TH400, just because thats what the guy told me, I haven't seen underneath it yet.

Actually, Now I'm quite sure its a 75, not a 74 like he says, The grille is right for a 75, as is the side trim, (Or former side trim) As well, as I don't remember there being such a thing as a 74 Scottsdale.

Well after talking to the guy some more, he swears up and down that its a 74. Even when I tell him its not.

Says his dad bought it new in 74, I think he bought a new 75, in late 74.

Also says he really doesn't know what trans is in it. all he knows is its some kind of rebuilt automatic.

I had a '75 K5 ,that was a one owner (family) and unmolested cosmetically--maybe you can compare the nose to that truck and see if they jive..
It likely has a TH-350 tranny--not the end of the world,I had several that held up a long time to plowing abuse..the NP-203 is a cast iron ingot, pretty strong, the full time 4wd will suck gas, unless its had a kit and locking hubs put on it..it can be used for a doubler for a NP-205 too..

Sorry I only have one photo of the '75 and its not "straight on"..

I know that the grille is either a 75 or 76, and being a Scottsdale, it can't be older than a 75.

And it does look like it has lock outs on the front, though I could be wrong.

And how about that, I technically still own a blue 2wd 75 Blazer that was born with a 400.
My dad bought it for the 400, to go in a 77 4 speed Blazer. Then it just sat next to the shed for the next 19 years, until my mother sold the property a few years ago.

Funny part is he ended selling the yellow 77 to get an identical 73, yellow, 4spd, someone had even put a 400 in it.

Well, I sold my green F250 last night, tore me up, but it wasn't doing any good sitting infront of my shed.

Decided to move the Dream Square build to the back burner, and focus on the 12 Valve Cummins.

Its a 94 3/4 ton 2wd, 12 valve with an NV4500. My dad bought this truck in 2005, when it had 97,000 miles.
Since then its had a custom fuel plate installed, replaced the stock injectors with 190 Marine injectors, Something was done with the Turbo (I honestly don't remember, its still an HX35) I'm sure there were other things done, because I know the truck was dynoed in 2007 at some very impressive numbers, I forgot the exact ones, but its somewhere over 300 HP and 700 TQ.

We bought a V10 dually, put the 3:55 Dana 80 from the dually under it, along with air bags and put the dually bed on it as well. It went to Canada several times, did two circle tours of Lake Superior, Been to the Gulf coast of Alabama, out to Wyoming, up to New York, and down in to Georgia.

I have alot of memories with it. my dad lost his right leg in 2009, then since he couldn't drive a manual anymore, it was parked and hasn't been on the road since.
Over the years the bed was stolen, along with everything in it, The police didn't believe someone would steal the bed off of a truck, so it was just a straight loss. The back window was busted out, the drivers side window motor died, the wipers died. and the shutoff solenoid died too.

Fast forward to last summer, I drag it out of the weeds behind our shed, grab a $70 junkyard flatbed, plexi the back window, and then lost the time to mess with it.
Now with the extra funding from the sale of the 7.3, I figure I'll hurry up and get it back on the road.

Here's the to-do list as of right now,
Buy a couple batteries.
Change the oil.
Throw one of the good sets of tires on the factory SRW wheels.
Find a junkyard window motor.
Find a junkyard wiper motor.
Replace the shutoff solenoid and fuel filter.
Go for a drive!

Triple post for the win!

For the next installment of the build thread about nothing in particular, A guy found me, and he quite very much wants my Blazer, but now I'm back into my "I wanna keep it" mood.

Here's the interesting part, He's got an 80 round headlight K20, with a 4:56 geared full float 14 in the rear, and 60 in the front, with part time converted 203, SM465, and a very, very happy, revvy 355. Problem is, It looks like donkey snot. Rockers and cab corners are gone, floors are only there in spirit, has a wonky cab mount, and the front fenders look like they were trimmed by Ray Charles, with his feet.

A 5 inch lift all the way around, Didn't tell me how it was done, just told me the tires have more give than the springs. Almost bald 38 inch Super Swampers, on some very 90's aftermarket 16's.

Normally I'd say its too rusty for me, since the underbits it has, and that he has a few interstate road signs of questionable origin, which could make a lovely floor. And, he told me he could throw in "some" cash, I might just be interested.

I'd like to hear his definition of "some" cash first though.

Depends on what you want, eh? Nice running gear vs. nice body.

I personally would keep the nicer sheet metal, but that's just me. that truck seems like it would only be useful if you wanted a truck to beat on while crawling or running through swamps. Is that what you have in mind at this point?

If you're having a hard time deciding, just keep what you have. There's nothing fancy or luxurious about that rig, it doesn't fit the criteria you outlined...it's not the right truck. Unless you've changed your mind again as to what you want. :doah:

No, it doesn't fit my criteria, and no, said criteria haven't changed.

This is more of a mud truck, and it seems like it would be a damn good one.

I only bring it up, because this guy came to me, and wanted my Blazer, I don't even have the thing listed anywhere, and probably won't.
But, It is a 73-80, 4wd, 4 speed, 3/4 ton. BUT Its a Scottsdale, And has no floor, And the cab is only kinda sorta on the truck, And I'm pretty sure it was just a mud truck.
