Heart transplant time

Houston, we have a problem...

So, I got most of the install completed. I still need to finish the exhaust and a few other details, but it is mostly there.

Unfortunately, she wouldn't fire. The engine turns over sloooooow, and the starter is drawing a *HUGE* amount of current - enough to get 1/0 gauge cable quite warm and get the terminals of my Optima battery nearly too hot to touch :eek1: I figure there is one of two possibilities: either the engine is mechanically fragged inside, or the starter is hosed. I put a bar on the front pulley and give it a mighty tug... it turns, but not much and it is damn tough to get it to move. OTOH, it IS a diesel, and even SBC's take a bit to overcome the initial friction of the internals. Still, I'm worried, but the engine DID run... in fact it idled for probably 10-15 minutes in the donor truck after we got it running with no issues whatsoever.

I decide to pull the glow plugs and try it again. It is still hard to turn over with the bar (it's been a long time since I spun a 6.2 with a bar... do they have quite a bit of internal drag???). I decide to crank it with the starter and it spins probably 120-150 RPM, which tells me it is probably OK mechanically. Put the glowies back in and try it again... wuh, wuh, wuuh, wuuuuuh, wuuuuuuuuuuh.....

It looks like my 28MT starter is junk :doah:. The burnt electrical insulation smell should've been a giveaway . So, I'm dead in the water. Until my next paycheck rolls in I won't have the dough to do anything about it. I am going to see if one of the local rebuilders in town can fix it cheaper than a reman... we'll see...

I would check my grounds if I were you.

I just went through a bad starter episode with the pick-up here. Same deal, crank speed way down and no start. It had been sitting a little, so I threw the charger on it, checked the batts (12.74 volts engine off) and still no joy.

Fortunately I have the newish 28MT kicking around from the 6.2 out of my K5. Chucked that in and viola...spins over super fast and starts a ton better again. Also replaced two dead "Quick heats" which didn't hurt any. I have 5 more 'good' (I use the term loosely) Quick heats left in the kitchen junk drawer. AC60G's after that I guess.

Talked to Paul on the phone, and the 27MT I pulled out was the original starter. 26 years and 238,000 kilometers on the clock. I can't complain.

My guess is that this 28MT got killed by the previous owner trying to crank his 6.2 a bit too much. Probably shorted the windings... :(

BTW, how easily does your 6.2 spin over with a prybar on the front damper bolts?

Mine didn't turn over easily, but the thought of a messed up lower end never crossed my mind. I can not turn mine over with glow plugs installed without fearing I am going to twist the bolt off in the crank snout.

Well, mine seems to turn over OK without glows installed. Put the glows in and turn it against the compression and it is a bit.... stout. Which would be expected with 21.3:1 compression :D

I'm replacing the checker lifetime reman after 1500 miles today. I guess I've reprimed the fuel system too many times lately, it keeps smelling like slot car track when I turn the engine over.

Changed the starter... 25 minutes of work, 2 hours of waiting for the parts store to drive it from the next city over because someone forgot to put it on the normal morning truck.

I always forget how fast a fresh starter turns over a 6.2. Makes me realize that starters been unhealthy for 6 months or more.

It's alive! ALIVE!!!!!

It's amazing what a good starter will do for you. Keep in mind it is being cranked off of a single half-dead Optima (I need to throw the charger on it), and it is maybe 60 degrees outside right now...

Awesome!!! Amazing what good crank speed will do for a 6.2 huh?

Rene

Well he probably would have charged his battery back a little as well if he had the alternator belt on too.

I'll get to it :p: Tonight I messed with the engine bay wiring harness a bit. There's not all that much to hook up on it, so it won't be tough to reinstall. I was sick earlier this week, so not much progress has taken place. I hope to get it driveable this weekend.

Well I am at Macayos right now with Brian (BadAss90K5) drinking some Pacificos. I got the radiator in, the fan in, belts on, coolant in, and most of the wiring done.

I have a question though. Even with the motor quite warm to the touch it doesn't want to fire without glowing for a few seconds if it has not been running fot a while. I seem to recall the HMMWVs in the army firing without glows if the motor was barely warm...
