Hedman Elite Header Review

I have been header hunting for about a month now. I posted a topic asking for input and got nothing much for help. So, through all my surfing and searching, I decided down to Flotech 13500s or the Hedman 890s.

Miraculously, I was on another thread and made a comment - And lak2004 dropped the link for this thread - Which is developed and full of the info I was looking for initially  For whatever reason a search for header, etc didnt draw many results, which is when I started a new thread.

So, anyway, a credit to this thread is that I now know not to touch the 890s due to clearance issues, and that the probable best choice for my 86 350/700r4 is the 830s.

One question of the 830s though - 02 sensor - Is there arrangements for it or no ? I think I read different answers in this thread alone, but I'd like a definitive answer if possible. From the looks of it in Jason4x4's pictures, I'll need to make provisions for installation ?

I plan on running 3" true duals (FYI) once everything is figured out on this end.

Thanks for the help, and response(s) to my own question.

There is no provision for an O2 sensor on the 69830s. I own a set.

Thanks Craig - I was assuming this from all the pics but assumptions arent always right.

For those looking for cheaper headers, Hedman part number 69230 is physically the same header at half the price. The flange is thinner and its painted (which is a PITA).

I hate that header companies paint their headers with regular paint that will burn off in the first couple minutes of operation, they could just as easily paint them with high temp stuff.

Anyway, I stripped off all the paint that was on them and repainted them with spray paint meant for a BBQ grill, something like this. It has worked well on previous headers I have had.

Here's what the 69230's look like, they clear my mechanical clutch linkage just fine and tuck up much closer to the body than my previous headers (which also keeps the headers clear of the shackle bolts).

if those are 1 5/8 primary tubes and 3in ball collectors...they work and fit great, i had to use lock nuts tho to keep the collectors tight

Well, for what its worth. Here is a comparison of the header I took off my truck (top one) and the one I put on there (bottom).

THe top one was Hooker Competition ones, they didnt fit good. The passenger side hit the shackle so I had to tweak the header to make fit and the drivers side hit the Tranny linkage back near the firewall. You can see the one leg on the top header makes a crazy 45 degree bend and goes way out.

Im not sure on the bottom header, I got it from my buddy and he cant remember who made it, but alot of ppl on here think its Flowtech, but it installed much easier than the hooker. Bolted right up and had plenty of room everywhere. It wasnt close to the frame, steering, nothing.

american84k5, youll like those headers. they look identical to the ones I just posted. They should go on very easy. Do yourself a favor and get Fel Pro #1444 gasket. I tried to reuse my old gasket and had exhaust leaks. I got this one (recommended on here of course) and all my noises and leaks are gone.

Word I have a bunch of sets of gaskets in my garage.
I have some rubber ones that came with the headers, a set of felpro's and a set of copper mr gasket's.

Not sure which I'm going to use.

Notice any difference from going to those Hooker's to the other ones?

As far as power? Nope. Ive got true duals 2 1/4 with catco cats and Flowmaster 40series.

Install was a breeze, even the drivers side.

yea, id be using the fel pro gasket, I know im sold. lol.

X2. These were the gaskets I used as well.

Hey Craig -

I dropped the order on the 830s last night. I would say at this point, if you didnt get around to checking into that fab kit not to worry about it. It will probably go easier dropping the Jimmy at a shop anyway - I'd have a local point of contact for issues if they arise.

Thanks for all the help !

Yeah sorry about not getting back to you, I've been balls-to-the-wall busy at work so I was only able to do a brief (fruitless) search. You're better off going custom.

I've got a 91 Jimmy TBI. Looks like I should go with the 69830. What did you do about the O2 sensor?

You will have to weld an O2 bung in the collector or just behind it.

On a side note, I just found these, anyone have experience with these? They have an 02 bung:

They are Pace Setter headers 70-2500 (or 72C2500 for ceramic coated). They are 16ga.
I just found them this morning, I've never even heard of Pace Setter and can't find much info on them. Their website is a bit lacking.

You can get header reducers with O2 bungs.

O2 bung is no issue, just drill, weld, no sweat. I just never heard of that brand before, that it was weird. Some of the smaller companies can be really good stuff, or really bad.

I was wondering if someone could help me out with a/c bracket info on the 830s. They are going on my 87 jimmy. Its a large A shaped bracket that mounts the a/c and ps and bolts to 2 studs on the drivers side front port of manifold. I talked to summit and they said either you buy a bracket or modify existing....been searching a lot but havent found the answer yet.
