Help me decide if it'll make it....<---I'm back w/ pics!

My brother-in-law has this term called "analysis paralysis." In other words, over-thinking it.

JUST GO FOR IT!!!

Use the trailer if you do break. If you're really that worried, AAA. Look for used spares on your local craigslist or 4x boards.

True, but I never intended on taking it on this trip. If you guys knew me personally you would know that if I know in advance about something I'll be prepared for anything. I have today off and I work tomorrow and then we leave on Sunday so I don't have time to run around and get everything, plus funds are low after that $300+ brake job (which needed to be done so I don't feel too bad).

Good news guys, I decided that I was over analyzing this and my dad and I are going. The factor that pushed me over the edge was you guys basically saying what good is it if I can't run it and our friend that owns the mechanic shop here in town saying that he wouldn't hesitate to take that old chevy 160 miles.

I'll be sure to take the camera and write up the inevitable good story when I get back. BTW does anyone live along the way from Fresno to Pismo? I remember that there is a guy one here who actually lives in Pismo but I don't remember who.

chevyin; Chris and Gary I believe. Haven't seen them, about a year I guess. Great guys.
Was going to go for Memorial Day, but Wife needed fixing.

Yeah I'm on there but it only shows who is on the way. I was hoping to do a mini version of what Can did on his road trip, getting a few numbers from people like Esteban who lives in Bakersfield (about half way there) and from people in and around Pismo. I probably won't have to use them but it sure gives some peace of mind.

Roadnotca: sounds like a story for the Pigpen. :D

I also just got back from the store and I picked up a 600w power inverter so I can run my compressor if I need to on the beach or on the side of the road since I don't have my CO2 setup yet.

My dad called the local 4 wheel parts and they said that if I want to come by they have a ton of take off tires from local mall crawlers that change them practically once the nipples are worn off and they told me that if I want to come by during business hours that I can have one for a spare. I don't really know if they'll have an exact 38.5" MT Baja Claw but even if not I'll be able to find something close.

I did look through the user list and found exactly what you posted, Chevyin looks to be the only one who lives in Pismo and is active around here.

Well tonight was pretty eventful, I finally got my new dip stick as they had to order it so that was a relief. I put it in and found that I was in fact a little low so I'll pick up some oil, atf and top off my water jug before we take off for Pismo.

I was able to route my own wires from my battery into the cab and got my power inverter hard wired in instead of using the cigg. lighter (since it doesn't work anyways) and it works like a champ. I put in my big stereo from my room (JVC MX-GT88) and it ran it like nothing was even plugged in. The batt. stayed right at around 12.5-13 on the guage when it was running with the stereo blaring. I am a little more comfortable now knowing that I will be able to run some tools and my compressor if I need to.

I don't have a high lift but I am going to take a floor jack just in case I need to get it up to patch or replace a tire in the event of a blow out. At home I use jack stands so should I take them or should I just stick with the floor jack and hope I find some level ground?

Ok guys and gals I'm all packed up and ready to go tomorrow after church. This is going to be a fun trip now that I have talked myself into taking the beast. I've been putting a ton of work into getting ready and have tried to think of everything to take....

I now have a full size spare (metric but around 35" BFG MT mounted on a 16" rim, inflated and balanced) thanks to my dad. He spent his lunch break running around town and calling shops until he found a shop willing to help the get avery's truck to pismo cause. :wink1:

I have a 2 1/2 ton floor jack and my jack stands, atf fluid, oil, a water jug and some radiator fluid. I also picked up a plug/patch kit just in case (before I knew about the spare). My teacher who helps out a ton loaned me the floor jack and also sent me home with a little on board air setup that just cycles continuously and is rated to 150psi so I have a way to air up if I decide to air down in the sand or if I need to patch a tire.

I topped off all my fluids tonight and I'll gas her up in the morning then I'm off!

I have looked around and found some members who live along the way. If you wouldn't mind helping out a fellow CK5'er in a desperate time of need and you live along the way from Fresno to Pismo shoot me a PM with your number and I'd greatly appreciate it.

I just got home from church and I'm loading everything up into the bed of the truck, we're planning on leaving in about an hour or so. I will probably be gone from CK5 for the next week so see ya'll later!

Dude....just drive the damn thing. Get outta your head. If something happens, deal with it. If nothing happens, enjoy yourself.

Have a safe trip, take lots 'o pics, and - oh, yea....DON'T AIR IT OUT AT PISMO! You'll be fine.

Oh, and PLEASE DEAR GOD get a more decent picture for your avatar while you're there. Showing off your curb-'crawling prowess just makes us wanna laugh!:haha:

It's just about as close as you can get to anything around here. I would prefer to have a nice shot in the dunes though so I'll snap a ton of them for you all. ;)

Well guys here we are Friday and I have just now been able to get on CK5. It's a long story but basically here is how it went...

My dad and I loaded up and took off out of Fresno after church as you all knew about and we headed for Pismo. We drove for about 80 miles and stopped in Kettleman City before heading over the hills. We pulled into the Carl's Jr. Parking lot and popped the hood. I walked over and poured some cold water I was drinking on the radiator and it didn't even steam off! It just beaded up and sat there, that's a great sign as the ambient temp. was about 105* the entire way and the truck ran great and cool!

We loaded back into the truck and took off over our first hill and wam! That's when it hit us, the truck was having one heck of a time getting over the hills, I dropped her down into 3rd and it did a little better but things were still not looking good. We kept going for a little while until it started to get too bad. Long story short we had the cajonies to get over the hills but the tranny just wasn't going to have it. To keep this short as I'm on dial up and a limited amount of minutes 1st and 2nd are slipping bad to the point where it only works if driving flat with a light foot while 3rd is gone completley and od does me no good since I can't climb in it so I had to turn around after about 100 miles from home. We got home and luckily a friend let us borrow an extra car for the week and we finally made it to Pismo about 9 hours after leaving our driveway that afternoon.

Thanks for the support but now it looks like I'll have to replace the tranny when I get home. One thing I do have to say though is that my old Chevy didn't leave me standed. It limped home and is resting for the week in front of my house.

Chevyin: I got your PM's and as much as I would like to head to the dunes I don't have anything to go to them in (the borrowed geo won't cut it ;)) so we'll have to hook up another time. I'm here until Sunday.
Oh and my cell is 559-960-1707, thanks for your's.

-Avery

ah so thats why u were worried,, but yeah the trucks are pretty good for limping themselfs home!

No kidding man, I was pretty pissed when it happened but somehow it made it home. We had to feather the throttle because as soon as the engine would start to get into it the tranny would be gone, slipping so bad it felt as if we were in neutral. Once we got it out onto the flats it was able to slowly and I mean slowly gain momentum up to 4th gear and I caught the few lights home and she limped the last 70 miles or so home. I don't know what I'm going to do but I wanted to get on since I had spoken to Chevyin about meeting in the dunes but now that won't be possible.

I'll figure out what I have to do with the tranny when I get home, that already sounds like a fun project ;)

I'll talk to you guys later.

-Avery

we just took a trip to the beach (about 140 miles or so) and my brother took his suburban that usually runs 38.5's but he just put his old 33's that are in good shape on then put the others on when we got there. he got better milage and it was a little quicker too.
