Horton, driveshaft opinions wanted

So this is what we started with a nice 1987 k1500 longbed. Totally stock

...

We took 10" out of the frame (sorry no pics of that) and started boxing the rear of the frame Building spring hangers and such

Digging WAY back to the first page of the thread but I love your truggy so much that I have a few questions for you:

When you took 10" out of the frame, did you hack it from the back behind the rearmost leaf mount or from the middle of the frame to shorten the wheelbase?

When mounting the blazer tank behind the cab did you have to fab crossmembers to mount to? Any clearance issues between the tank and the transfer case, driveshafts, exhaust, etc underneath it?

I have a 1973 K10 I'm just starting to build and am greatly inspired by your build. Keep up the great work!

Thanks.

Thanks man.

1st the frame. Took 10" out of the middle mounted the 63s and then cut off the excess

This picture shows it best. Wanted a 120" wheelbase out of it. The frame cut is right on the second gusset on the spring hanger. This pic shows all the excess that was left on the back, it all got cut off

frame-1.jpg

As far as the tank goes, it has never been lower than the bottom of the frame, it actually sat a couple inches above the bottom of the frame, so I never really had issues with it

good pic of where the gas tank was when Horton was first built,

frame1.jpg

Now the tank sits above the frame but it sits right above the rear axle and I have inboarded shocks. I am going to outboard my shocks and run them straight up and down and lower the tank. This will require cutting the frame a bit but no big deal. And yes all the mounts were fabbed up.

I actually made gas tank straps out of some all thread a nut coupler and some 1/8 1" wide flat bar to mount to this time.

This next time I am not sure what I will do but its definately going to be sunk down into the frame more.

I drove a zuk for years and you learned to use every once of usable space so it drives me nuts there is so much room in this truck that I am not using.

Pics pics. Destruction Rawr!!!!!

More after the weekend Adam.

Gotta go see my parents this weekend. Yes but soon the whole cage will be cut apart.

BTW anyone got any cool door bar designs. I want more protection for the upper body.

Horton is kind of hard to get into and I am fat, so I can't do some crazy bars where it would take me 10 minutes to get in but I would like more protection for the upper body

Why not just make some tube doors that have some beefy ways of attaching to the frame.

Looking at doing something like that Adam.

I am trying to figure out a cool way to skin part of them too, got a couple extra doors kicking around, might just extend the bed skins a bit, not sure yet.

Its all up in the air right now. This is the part I really like about building, being creative and changing stuff up.

Only thing that is for sure is Horton will always have skins that will make him look like a Chevy

Awesome plan blazinzuk

I like the sound of that!!!
The body style is part of what brought a good number of members here in the first place...
It will be nice to see!

Christmas has been getting in the way of working on stuff so not much of an update.

More of a I want opinions question.

So as of now probably not going to take Horton to KOH so I don't need to be done with everything in a couple weeks.

This is actually a very good thing.

The frame in the front has always bothered me. I had held of doing anything to it because of my recently redone winch mount, and the fact that I wanted to go full hydro.

Well that just ain't gonna happen anytime soon. So I think I am going to ditch the frame basically from the spring mounts forward.

Which means a total redo of spring mounts, engine mounting, transmission, transfer case, radiator, steering box, shocks and winch.

I want to clean it up a bunch, lose some weight off the nose, get the radiator dropped down some. Might even move the steering box forward a touch, I haven't redrilled my perches or anything yet so I could move the axle forward an inch or so. Which would help with approach.

I think after this is done if it all works out Horton is going to be wheeled as is for a while.

I wish I could just drop the coin and link it go full hydro etc. But its simply not in the cards for the foreseeable future.

What say ye? Good idea? Too much work for not enough return?

Also if you have read my thread you realize Horton pretty much changes and so do the plans as I get stuff for screamin deals. It also will change if I can pick up a ride for Horton to KOH.

So while this build is as fluid as it gets, this is something I have been wanting to do for a very long time

I'd wait till ya link it...

Problem being I really don't know if I will ever link this truck.

Horton works awesome, sure he has problems but the leaf springs getting caught on stuff is so far a pretty small problem.

Besides that the reason I might not link Horton is because when that time comes I think I will take my own advice and just start a full tube car.

Anyway linking Horton is a ways out and I have linked enough stuff to be able to build the frame to accommodate links no problem.

One of the reasons I thought of doing this now is the fact that I need to sink some money into my dually. What I am actually proposing is a ton of work but not alot of money

a man after my own heart... :haha:

the sad thing for me is, even if I had a ton of money to throw at things, I'd still do a ton of work, if not more! :doah: :dunno: :haha:

When you want something cool it usually costs alot of time. :waytogo:

Well no you can buy cool, but you can't buy awesome cool, takes work to do that :D

Have you see Dirtygoats blazer? It sounds similar to what you have been describing.

I would do it. Fabricating stuff is relatively cheap. When I'm feeling like I want to do stuff with my truck but don't have the money, I come up with fab projects. Yeah, they may be more effort than they are truly worth, but I get a feeling of satisfaction having done them. Plus you do several of those, plus eventually some of the "high-dollar" expensive stuff and then you have a really neat truck with lots of custom touches.

Eric, as you mentioned your truck works stupidly awesome from what I've seen, I would simplify things even more on the front if you can keep it cheap, and go for reliability. Horton is a great working rig, having big ideas is cool, but keeping it going is paramount!!!!

Thats part of the reason, the stock frame is really totally wrong for a low slung 4x4 with any uptravel at all. I already hit my oil pan with a couple of things and getting the motor an inch up and probably 2 or 3 back would help that alot.

So the whole frame idea is not to add strength its mostly to clean up some mounting systems, and make things even more simple than they already are.

In addition moving some of the weight back it should help me on stupid climbs. I will probably only raise the motor an inch that won't affect my COG much at all but getting it back should help more.

Just more simple things. Hortons simple and I want to keep him that way
