Horton, driveshaft opinions wanted

Eric I know you want to climb the ladder of progression but Horron works so dam well.
I say rebuild/repair/refine what you got and go with it!

Yah why spend more time angling the fenders in when you could just cage it and go.

Then build a buggy someday.

Geez slavedrivers every single one of yas.

Mike I got a couple Jeeps to regear so can't tie up the garage with Horton just yet.

Adam it will be up wheeling as soon as the cage is done. Just cause I can hang fenders on it doesn't mean I will before I wheel it.

Dave thats really whats goin on here. Just refining what I already have. I need to get a new radiator ordered sometime too. My current one works mostly alright as long as you don't need to take off the cap or anything. :D:D

Smallest radiator I could use TBI small block no real mods.

Gonna try to run headers on it, completely open engine bay. Gonna move my coolers to the side, so they aren't in front of the radiator.

Will run an electric fan on it and will build a shroud to space the fan back an inch or so from the radiator

I am thinking a less expensive ( like the one Zimmerman used on the maiden)
universal aluminum rad. I would prefer to find one that is 26" wide ( total width) at the maximum. I can fit that pretty easy.

Remember guys my radiator is not even close to the stock location

I will probably run fans on both my power steering and transmission cooler

Dave I just wanna quote this from you dude.

You have been telling me this everytime I come up with some stupid idea. I go racing I get all these grand dreams. They will come through eventually but I did not get to wheel pretty much the best months of wheeling around here and it has really made me depressed. No release you know.

New motto for Horton is Rebuild Repair and Refine!!!!!!!

Thats cool Eric, and I still think that is best for Horton..it works so dam good the way it is!
As far as radiator goes...the one I got is a Northern unit...very nice piece, but its even overkill for my BBC....I would think with the TBI stock SBC you could get an even smaller radiator if your looking to narrow down some more?
Mine is a 2 row (1" tubes) and as long as the fans are on, it NEVER gets above 190 (180* thermo)....It was a GREAT purchase!

Yah I am going to narrow the front to the frame rails pretty much. I need to do alot of work to the frame there anyway with the shock hoops, and my spring mounts in the front are gonna get a bit more precise.

I was thinking that even a pretty small radiator would cool pretty decent, its not like small blocks run hot or anything. Never had a problem keeping it cool even without a shroud and a little leak in the rad. Pretty much gonna be the exact same one as you got just smaller

Plus some clearance for some new steering components if budget allows

Like you said rebuild, repair and refine :D

Eric

In my buggies former, former life I had a 27.5X 15 Griffen dual 1.25" core radiator. It was adaquate on the trail but if you drove over about 30 for very long it over heated. We added a 12" PWR cooler as a "heater core" behind the seats in good air flow with a engine oil cooler for Vegas to Reno in 09 and it ran that whole race that way. It ran hot a few times but never over 230 in the head. That was our slow down temp and we had to idle along on the side of the course a few times. It was 115 for parts of the race and the silt beds are nasty.

I try for a bit larger rad. but if you keep all of the air you can going to it with really good fans it will be a good trail system but faster speeds in the summer will kill it.

Shouldn't finish be in there too

To quote Ryoken ( and I am sure tens of thousands of other gearheads across the world) what is this finish you speak of?

I need 30 grand to "finish" Horton

Now that your all hardcore and narrowed Keith time to bring that big burb up here and narrow it some more.

Thanks Brandon looks like I will be getting a bigger one then. I might add an engine oil cooler if I start getting worried about it.

I don't wheel fast very often. But Horton being the all powerful duramax beater (:haha::haha::haha::haha:) does spend some time at the dunes, and when Horton is at the dunes the only time the rpms drop below 3k is if I am stuck, or if I have to pull a rail out of harms way.

Nothing like sucking a 31 gallon tank dry in 6 hours, with a stock motor LOL

Thanks dude.

So do you think a 28x 19 (thats overall size) would be adequate? 2 row aluminum with 1" tubes

I bet a 28X19 can be made to work. Just keep the air flow really good and keep an area open for an engine oil cooler. Also the smaller cooler off the heater circuit trick worked well.

Like I said mine was real close but didn't quite work at 27 ish X 15

I run a stock 3 row radiator (I think, I havnt looked at it in years hardly and im buzzed) on my BB with windstars and it has never hit 210 when both fans ran. I lost my big fan at the last mudfest and the motor never got hot but the tranny puked all over. Which led me to the locking 700r4 dipstick and tranny vent drilled and tapped into the fill tube. Now all good in the hood. Plus a fuse for both relays this time around  :haha:

I love my windstar fans and I am running a normal sized radiator think its a three core.

With what I want to do a normal sized radiator is not gonna fit, gonna have to do mods to even get the 28" wide one fit. Stock rad is way wider

The other thing that happens s the coolant sometimes runs too fast I the system and doesn't get enough time to cool down.
hi flow water pumps are your enemy there.

I think there's a lot to this. I had a low thermostat in my truck thinking it would help it run cooler a few years back. When I recently did a bunch of changes on my truck I swapped in a big radiator with my fuel injection and I read it likes a 195* thermostat so I swapped it in place of my lower one.
All said and done it runs cooler and never overheats now. I don't even have a shroud on it, just a huge flex a lite fan.

Stock radiator is as wide as the frame rails and front spring mounts so if you are not going to cut the frame then that is all you got anyway.
