Horton, driveshaft opinions wanted

The myth is stated as either:

Coolant can be pumped too fast through the engine for it to absorb enough heat, or
Coolant can be pumped too fast through the radiator for it to cool properly, or
Cooling can be improved by slowing the flow of coolant through the radiator so it cools more completely.
NONE of these is true. The simple truth is that higher coolant flow will ALWAYS result in higher heat transfer and improved cooling system performance.

It not only is what I learned in engineering classes and physics, but also happened on numerous occasions when I bought cars with cooling issues and no thermostat in them, and once I put one in it fixed the problem.
The thermostat does slow down the flow whether closed or open, which gives time for coolant to absorb more heat and cool down more in the radiator.
Add more surface for cooling and you benefit. Rushing the coolant will not benefit you.
Same goes with A/C, run the fan really fast and you will have a tornado in your car but not as cold as slow fan.
And that is an example anyone with A/C can verify.
 
I am going to have to side with Ice on this, coolant needs to be slowed some to absorb the heat.

What that slowing down means not sure but in our circle track cars we all would run a hollowed out thermostat or a big holed washer to slow the water down.
 
Well I am still tbi dead bone stock so a 195* thermostat is what will stay in , its not that I am narrowing the frame its that the radiator has gotten taller, my radiator is like 6" back from the stock location and going further back so i basically need to drop it in between the frame rails. Even though I am staying leaf springs its beginning to look like a front frame rebuild may be the way to go. Fortunately that is pretty easy and doesn't use much steel. Motor is going back around 3" or so the rad is gonna travel with it. Means I can move my winch yet again. Nothing but the leaf spring hangers are gonna stick out in front

Nope I have been down for 3 weeks had a bad spell with my head. Cant get Horton done in time at all. I don't like it when my health problems decide things for me but not much I can do about it
 
I think adding the oil cooler you and miniwally mentioned above is a good idea. With the layout of your truck, it should be easy to mount it somewhere creative. My brother-in-law swears it really helped with his K5 pulling a big camper.
 
I never believed people when they told me that the coolant could be circulated to fast, I always ran hollowed out t-stats in my trucks and never had a problem with them overheating. But on one particular wheeling rig I had, I always had overheating problems on the trail. Stock 2 core radiator, stock fan, and stock 305 with a hollowed thermostat. It would gradually heat up till I eventually had to shut it down and cool off. Had lots of people tell me it was the head gaskets but I checked for other head/head gasket problems and no other symptoms existed.

First thing I did was electric fans with a shroud, made no change. Next I bought the biggest universal aluminum radiator I could fit. Think it was 31x19 and 2.5" thick. This slowed it down, took longer to heat up but the temp would still gradually rise until it overheated. I figured maybe my fans weren't big enough, bought cheap ones to begin with, so I bought a set of windstar fans. Didn't change things any. As a last resort before pulling the engine and finding a new one was to install a 160* thermostat. I could flog it as hard as that little 305 would go on 100*+ days and I never saw it move past 170*.

Thanks guys I really appreciate that. Its so much freaking work and this year poor Horton has been so neglected. I am pretty excited to get to working on it again.

Should be some shock work coming up hopefully before summer time (2014), gonna put my sway aways on rear and just use them as shocks retaining the leaf springs.

And hopefully I will be getting some other smooth body reservoir shocks that are 2.5s for the front.

I think some serious shock tuning is gonna help those leaf springs out a ton.


Now I need to decide if I want to rebuild the front of the frame or not.

Kind of leaning towards it, get me everything I want and get some more stuff out of the way to allow for more static uptravel on the front
 
Smallest radiator I could use TBI small block no real mods.
I am thinking a less expensive ( like the one Zimmerman used on the maiden)
universal aluminum rad. I would prefer to find one that is 26" wide ( total width) at the maximum. I can fit that pretty easy.

Remember guys my radiator is not even close to the stock location

I've got one of these, intend to run it in my truck (almost identical in size to the stock AC condensor), but have no confirmation that it will work for a truck. Cars tended to be right on the ragged edge of cooling, but that radiator is for a small block, with AC, so it must be "enough" in those regards.

Crawling might be an issue, but effective fans should solve part of that, and a high flow water pump probably wouldn't hurt either.

Not going to get into the argument of what coolant strategy works.
 
Finally got going on Horton again. Made some decisions too. Horton is gonna stay the same mostly. There's lots of tweaking I can do to improve stuff. Custom leaf springs may come someday but not anytime soon.

Moving the gas tank down. Rebuilding the cage and reworking the front suspension are the among the first things that will happen. Being I live in Wyoming now( no shop or even garage) Horton was at a buddy's shop that he is going to vacate in the near future so now Horton resides in my other buddy's tractor shed.

To work on him efficiently I need Horton running again I am finally gonna run hard line and minimize my use of soft line also gonna relocate the tank ( again)

Anyway pretty stoked to finally have a goal in place. July 1 to be back wheeling. Pretty stoked to have made the decision on how far to go too. And it's not as far as I have previously mentioned.

So got started on frame cleanup and the cage only a couple pics cause I forget to take pics when working

That's the goal. Gotta get my crew cab running too though lots of projects all of em 2 hours away. And not much money to go round

Course if my buddy gets his bronco dos done ( super duty tons, 39" pit bulls 4.0 v-6 1345 doubler) and grain harvest doesn't come early might be going down with a Cherokee a bronco 2 and Horton on a semi
