My manual says there is a nut with a cotter pin.....I don't see it.

Nut with cotter pin is 2 wheel drive.

You still have a nut, but its deeper than you are looking.
I'm much better with Fords, but they both use the same basic stuff.
The spline you see in the middle is the axle. Take a screwdriver or something and push on the steel chunk around the axle.
It should slide back in and you will see or feel a wire ring around the inside of the hub which is keeping that big chunk from sliding on out.
Work it out, and the chunk will come out with a spring behind it.

The Nut(S) are behind that. They usually need a special socket, but can be removed without it.

I recommend the socket.

Thanks for quick response, I am going to try it now!

No luck...there is nothing that I see that it is holding it...no ring, no pin

Good luck.
After you get that clip off, you will probably have to push the chunk in and let it pop out a few times until you get it to come all the way out.

Then there will be two nuts. The outside one, which is what you will see first. It should be really tight, but might not be.
Then there should be some kind of a washer with holes in it that will slide back off and then the main bearing nut.

I could be off on some of the details, but I'm pretty close. I'm sure more knowledgeable GM guys will jump in soon and correct me.

What items have you taken off thus far? Did you remove a round wire clip from the inside perimeter of the wheel hub? If you did then you need to push the slug back and file the edge of the splines on the axle so that slug will come off.

No....I haven't even looked at the inside...is there something I need to remove there?

None Of my manuals cover this...none of them look like mine

The only thing I have removed so far is the dust cap

Will it push back?
Try tapping it lightly if not.

In your picture, I see what looks like the groove for the ring with nothing in it.

Hit it with some WD40, and try tapping lightly around the outside of the housing.
There should be a spring behind it. It should push in regardless, but if the keeper is gone already, then it will work out when you tap it.
Otherwise you will have to push it in slightly.

The keeper, if its there, is in a groove around the inside of the housing.
Its fairly small, and just a piece of heavy wire. Sometimes its hard to see.

With the threads in the center, it almost appears as if you need a puller to pull it off

Yea..it pushes back

Nope, those threads are in the axle. It does not come off that way.
Take something like a punch or chisel and a hammer and tap the big part around the axle back into the hub slightly. It will go.

It slides off over the part in the center and the splines on the inside of the hub which you will see when it slides back.

Ok, the piece circled in red, can you push it in? If you can then look carefully at the blue circle and you can clearly see where there are burrs at the edges of the splines and THIS is what's causing the slug to not come out. You need to push the slug back and file the axle aplines until you remove those burrs then the slug will come out easily.

Be back with a pic in a sec.

OK, you are half way there. Look right where the splines in the outer part stop, and you should see a small round piece of wire held in by its own tension
A sharp knife, should work under it and lift it out.
NOTE: Odds are you will break the tip of the knife the first time, so don't use a good one.

OK, you got 4X4HIGH online now. I'm going to sit back. He does more of these in a week than I do in 3 years.
PS, while you are waiting for Scott to post the pic, grab a file. He is going to show the the burrs you will need to file down so the chunk will come out.

I saw them, but I wanted to make sure the wire clip was not in the way first.

I got awire brush and cleaned the crap out of it and then got my stainless steel dental pick and went around it...there is no clip

I can see from your pic that there is no clip holding the slug, it is all about those burrs now. :deal:

I drew a blue arrow pointing to the burrs I speak of. I should have positioned that arrow a little further outboard but the burrs that are giving you grief are on the outside edge of the axle.

Dumb question, but I will need to replace that clip to put it back together...what do I say it is at the auto parts store?

You mean that thing that looks like a bottle cap? file the valleys or the high parts?
