how long have you had your K5?

Yeah that's the one. Had em for a little while but I sure wish they were more round.

Yeah, that happens....I guess you can't expect that much from a non-dot approved 44" mud tire, haha

That's the same guy I talked to about the tires on pirate before I made the purchase....I'm still really glad I bought the tires....they have worked well for my rig so far

KC lights and a paint job on it and sold it for $4500 when we moved from Montana in 2003 (before and after pics). Purchased my 2nd K5 (the one I have now in 2000) for $750. this K5 needed a ton of work and $7,000 to get it where it is today. would like to lift it to get some 33" or 35's under it. (kind of before and now pics ).Scan0004.jpg

In 1993... my buddy had one that he was getting ready to dump. An 87 GMC Sierra Classic with all the options on 33" tires. I jumped at it and paid $7200 hard earned high school dollars.

Vaguely similar story here.

In 1993 my grandparents told me they were selling their '74 K5 (original owners) to my cousin (she was bragging how she was going to make all this money parting it out) but that she wanted them to basically give it to her - they said whoever gives us $800 owns it.

The K5 had a Buick v6 from a '76 camaro my grandpa had swapped to try and get better gas milage in early '80s. Grandpa was a B-17 asst crew chief during WWII, after that ran a flathead era shop, and seemed to like modding. The odometer said 81,000 but I think it was 181k or maybe 281k. Like all K5s the electrical was not that good from the factory and that was task #1. I swapped the v6 for a 350 my neighbor had sitting in his yard and noticed my K5 in the driveway, called me over and sold me the long block for $50.

$850 (hard earned high school dollars bussing tables at the italian joint), a tank of gas, a bottle of jack, my 12ga, a backpack of clothes, toothbrush, and I was the kid off to community college. For the most part other than adding a locker and going up to '38s and back down to '32s it is still the same truck today. Here is where our stories get similar again, 2014 wife said more or less use it or lose it so it is my daily driver.

sounds like it is time to begin the buildup. ;)

I think that is why I have had it so long - nothing too radical, drives good, goes off road anywhere I need to be, decent fuel economy. Biggest mod was adding a rear seat for my kids from a late model suburban with shoulder belts three across. Also added a backup camera. My wife mentioned A/C the other day but that was just an exceptionally hot day. I can't say there is anything I'd like to have that it does not have. It is a good all around balance. Could use a new stereo but the wife won't sign off until both speakers stop working.

EDIT: Two mods I would like, crossover steering and rear disc brakes are seriously up for consideration. Maybe a three speed t-case if I have too much money.

If you meant a pic of the suburban back seat with the shoulder belts - this is my wife and kids. My kids really like the truck. Another mod I'd like to make, modern bucket seats in the front with shoulder belts and recline. Those are OEM seats (no headrest) that my grandma reupholstered sometime in the late '70s. Also, that is my son on the left with the long hair; he throws a solid right so I am not worried about kids at school teasing him about the hair.

I bought my 72 in 99 and promptly started looking for mods and things. Joined up here I believe in 2001 and that's when I started really modding it up. The May as well bug hit me hard for a few years and then it sat for almost ten as I got divorced and remarried and built up my family again. Finally got back On the road last year. It is awesome to be behind wheel of the 72 again.

Bought my 91 K5 in 1998 with 42k miles, daily driver until 2003. Still taking up space in my garage.
Traded a set of wheels and tires for my 71 in 2000. Been wheeling and upgrading it since then.

bought my '73 K5 (avatar) in the 80's. Had it for about 7 years and sold it. About 3 years ago I started looking for another and last Nov. found it. A '75 K5.
So far I've upgraded the instruments cluster with speed hut gauges, the a/c with a vintage air kit and a new dash pad. When I got it it had a 4" lift with blocks, although it seemed higher than just a 4" lift, and it was sagging pretty bad so I put a set of 56"/6" lift springs on the back to level it. After climbing in and out of it for a couple months I decided I didn't want it this high so today I installed a set of 2" springs that lowered it about 3-4". That kinda confirmed the higher than 4" lift.
Here's a pic when I got it.

I bought may 76 in April of 1984. It had 45XXX on it then, has over 300,XXX on it now.

my dad bought my suburban in 1993 or so, it was daily driven and hauled boy scouts until 1999 or so when we got a big as ford van for that duty and i told my parents the they couldn't sell the suburban. when i started driving in 2001, it was mine. by 2003 when i left for college it had a blown engine. i tried bringing it back to life in 2005 or so, didn't work, no compression. in 2010 my wife told me to do something with it. and here we are today.
