Ideas for BB18

I've been to blazerbash 3 different times and every single person I met or saw was super helpful and fun to be around. The tone of this discussion probably sounds harsher than it really is and that's just to highlight how important it is to make sure people do the best they can to make sure their vehicle doesn't break for dumb reasons. I volunteer to tail any trail I'm on in the future. I get lost on my way home from work so no one wants me anywhere near the front.

One improvement I'm making for next year - bringing a full trail map. I like to have a large paper map with lots of detail, my GPS, and a compass. This is a good primer, but I like marking up a paper copy. It's the hiker in me. The National Geographic maps have lots of details:

https://www.amazon.com/Bundle-Natio...&sr=8-1&keywords=national+geographic+moab+map

But in a pinch, I wish I'd searched for and found something basic like the jeep kids use.

I meant to look for something like this before we got to Moab too. Being a noob to the area I was pretty lost when it came to the overall layout and where trails were located.

Let's talk about something fun like how to we bribe a sponsor to throw down a couple more rc blazers ;)

I haven't met a bad dude yet from ck5 everyone here is awesome

Agreed. Haven't met anyone who wasn't willing to help.

You kind of gotta roll with the punches at blazer bash. It's all good and always fun.

I'm going to come right out and say that it had come across, at least to me, that you aren't/weren't interested in helping the new guys or being bothered by the lesser equipped rigs... I'm over here thinking, Geez, we all started somewhere, does @r3dd0g forget that?

A few people sent me some private convo's last night, we talked about what I said, we talked about the kind of guy you are, we talked about how Moab actually is. I know from past threads how you have been very helpful, and the guys I talked to said you are quite agreeable in person.
I think I have overstepped my boundaries here. I apologize.
I completely agree with you when you say "if you know your junk is broke, stay off the trail, don't knowingly become everyone else's problem."
I have never been to Moab, I shouldn't be so vocal in a Moab thread...
Hopefully next year you and I will get along great...

No offence taken. I'm the kind of guy that speaks his mind, I'm used to people thinking I'm an a$$hole, but if your sh*t is broken in half, I'll weld it back together for you if you ask. If I have the part you need, even if it's just a full can of beer, you can have it, no repayment necessary. This year was a bit different from normal, before you guys got there I had my fill of sitting around on a trail trying to piece back together rigs that weren't tested properly before they got there and were on trails they shouldn't have been on.

Something Brandon and I have started is doing what everyone says won't work at Blazer Bash. Brandon and I got a group through Golden Spike (AKA Trifecta) in the daylight. The year after that I upped the ante and took a group through Poison Spider, Where Eagles Dare, Golden Spike, Gold Bar Rim and Little Canyon, and we beat the Crack N Back guys back to town... This year Brandon and I took a group through Pritchett and Behind the Rocks (backwards). We were back in town by 5. The first year we made it through Golden Spike in the daylight, was the year Kieth lost an ignition module (we sent Brandon to town to get a new one), the white UA truck lost an ignition module (we called Brandon and told him to grab that while he was at the parts store too), Wade broke a panhard bar mount and Wally lost a fuel pump (technically he was leading the crack n back group). But because everyone was ready to attack any problem that arose, this wasn't an issue. We still powered through, started skipping the optional stuff and finished at a respectable time. The things I'm throwing out here are from experience, not just crazy idealistic thoughts.

I wheel the sh*t out of every rig I've ever owned. I wheel more in any given month of the year than most "wheelers" wheel all year. This is how I break so many crazy parts that shouldn't break, this is why my rigs are built to the hilt. I will wheel with anyone at any time, but if you bring garbage to the trail and expect to break because you're doing a trail that is beyond your rigs/your capabilities, I won't be wheeling with you again until you change your attitude. I'm just as happy driving down a scenic dirt road as I am on a hardcore trail. I just want to wheel.

I use an app on my phone called Back Country Navigator. It has topo maps and I can import GPS tracks downloaded from websites like traildamage.com. I also record our trail runs for future use, like if I want to know how long a trail run took.

Yes, buy Back Country Navigator (if you're on Android). It's awesome, I use it all the time, it has all my tracks on it and keeps me from getting lost.

I have Back Country Navigator on a tablet in a ram mount on the dash..Saw a video of Norby wheeling with it like that.

I am one of the guys who didn't make it to blazer bash. I am sure there are many of us who really wanted to be there but it just didn't work out. My crew cab is too big for trails and my new blazer build was just barely finished. BB17 was my inspiration when I was wrenching late into the night, trying to get it all done. I would not be at this point without a goal to shoot for. I very badly wanted to roll out and join the fun. I decided to not go until I had more time to shake down my rig. I would hate to be "the guy" whose luck ran out and held everyone up. On the other hand, one of the things that draws me to club rides is being able to push my rig and see what it can do while knowing that a knowledgeable group is there to help out if needed. I look forward to BB18, and I will be happy knowing that I have worked a year's worth of bugs out before hitting the moab trails. See you all next year.

sooner or later everyone gets a turn at being "that guy"...don't sweat that

Every time we have one of these threads I feel like the take away should be

  • Seat time is better than anything
  • Just because the internet says you need XYZ to go to Moab and have fun doesn't actually mean you really need that.
  • If you do lots of work on your vehicle, finish it a month ahead of time and drive it,
  • The BB "staff" is really all volunteers and we want to help but there are only so many of them/us to go around.
  • Things happen on the trail, those should be the holy crap that just happened. NOT oh! that ujoint has been squeaking for a year so it's no surprise it blew up, oh shoot it took out the axle shaft too? Wow man who has one I can use?
  • There are fast movers and slow movers on the trail, we all need to work together to get the trail done.
  • Don't underestimate your vehicle but please don't over estimate yourself.

And I really like to get to camp in the daylight, mainly because the bulk bottle of Jack is there. I only have emergency rations for the trail.
