Introductions & Greetings

Hey everyone. Just joined as I purchased a 1982 6.2 Diesel Jimmy just a month ago. At first glance everything appeared to be original with the exception of an Earl Scheib paint job and an ‘89 front grill but the further I dig, the more I see this baby has been hacked by her previous owners. No clue how many she’s had or her actual mileage. Clock shows 25,xxx miles (125, 225, 325?!) but has an original CA blue plate. Factory window sticker shows it was delivered in VA Beach, VA back in 1982 so it must have been brought to CA by end of 1986 and has been registered ever since. Front suspension components need replacing but has Rough Country leaf springs up front and blocks out back. Carpet has been removed due to a cowl/windshield leak I found and have already POR-15’d the passenger floorboard. Has a few small holes in the passenger floorboard. The motor looks like it’s been pulled before as it’s been painted red. Previous owner started it for me with starting fluid which I learned online will kill a diesel engine. Wonder if that has anything to do with how hard it is to start up... perhaps there’s some internal damage? Transmission slips every now and then in 1st and everything that holds fluid leaks but the trans and radiator. Got quite the project but have already done some rust repair, have added a new steering wheel with a working horn (bought without a horn button) and have replaced the ignition lock cylinder. Looking forward to learning about these trucks via this forum and hopefully making some friends. Cheers!

Your in the right place. I know nothing about diesels myself but lots of 6.2 owners here. Even more former 6.2 owners here. And just as many 6.2 ball buster's but its all in good fun.
Nice looking rig.

82 was the first year for the 6.2 and the only year with the red engine which has a higher nickel content in the block, injectors are short course thread, and the grill is 83-85
And welcome to the forum

The engine color sounds like promising news! And for the front grill, that makes sense. Thanks!

The 82 front bumper had running lights and turn lights in it someone swapped it out and needed turn signals so they went with the newer style grille.

Hey, I'm Michael... picked up an 85' K5 Blazer a few months back... Looks like it's got a 4"-5" lift with 33's.

First thing I noticed was over steering, bad brakes and hitting a bump in the road will nearly throw you into the next lane. I've been on a mission to fix these issues from day one... Not a mechanic, but handy with tools and some basic mechanical skills.

Here's some pics of my K5 and some notes on what I've replaced so far:

1) New ball joints (all up front)
2) New inner and outer tie rods
3) New sway bar bushings
4) New steering stabilizer
5) New steering gear box
6) New brake lines, front calipers, rotors
7) New front wheel bearings'
8) New U joints up front

After all this, still seems to have an issue with over steering... which I continue to work on... Wish me luck!

@RSAP start a thread in the garage section so that we can try to help out. And if you would take some pictures of the steering linkage at the axle, it would help. I am wondering if you have the proper parts for the lift height.

Appreciate the feedback, but what are you seeing on the tire wear that looks bad? Tires are old and need replacing anyway, but I want to fix the problems before new tires, otherwise they’ll wear bad again.

The high low lug wear pattern is a telltale sign of a misaligned frontend.

Couldn't tell you what without some pictures. Start a new thread about it.

Welcome! I joined a while back and just had my first posts last week... in that time. I’ve gotten lots of fixes with suspension and almost have AC working! Greatest K5 group ever!
