Introductions & Greetings

1986 Military M1009 K5 Blazer w/6.2l Detroit diesel. Currently a beautiful self-etch primer and bondo color (rust control while it's still on the surface). Hopefully a better flat forest green Rust-Oleum color soon :-)

Currently sitting in the garage with the radiator drained for new rubber hoses (they're getting sketchy)

Welcome! Be careful of leaving primer on any bare metal since it will promote rust. I did Rapco 383 green on my M1008 which matches the door jambs perfect and did it all rattle can and it came out really nice since flat paint is very forgiving. Shows this in post #93

Wow! Nice :-) Really wish I had the M1008 vs the M1009. The price was right though (free).
It looks like I'm having a lot of the same issues you ran into (wipers slow, wiper pump dead, rubber hoses rotting, etc).

I just replaced the starter since it was locking up and upgraded to AC Delco 60G plugs.
Had to redo the wiring since the connector was larger, threw some fiberglass sleeves over the connectors since the original ones were heat resistant. Starts instantly in cold weather now vs 20 seconds of cranking.

Upgraded to LED bulbs, rewired for a 3-pin relay to support. (This also solved trailer lights flashing rapidly when attached) New rubber brake lines, flush the Silicone DOT5 brake fluid for DOT3, new rubber steering lines. I think the transmission cooler lines are leaking as well... Most expensive "free" truck ever :-)

Looks to be in great shape! My wipers are still slow so need to look at maybe adding a relay. Think it might be low voltage thing. Keep up the great work!

slow wipers most of the time i have seen is the shaft / post the arm clips on is getting dried out of lube and makes them hard to turn back/forward . i pop the wiper motor off the firewall and move the linkage arm my self and if its not smooth and hardly any effort to overcome the wipers then its time to swap it or find a way to lube it .

welcome to the site . great people here . thats a super free rig a the money you put in it is a lot cheeper than a new vehicle . i am currently doing a m1009 / blazer build of a different flavor for my friend . https://ck5.com/forums/threads/3-to-4-build-for-the-family-the-build-out-has-started.336341/

make a list of things that need done and you wish to do . then prioritize them in to levels 1-2-3 and this will help you knock them out quick and keep you from falling in to the trap of massive builds .

Welcome to CK5, stop in and say hello, this is a great place to make your first post and tell us a little about yourself/truck. :D
I've been a member of the K5 Forums, but had lost my log in info,so I just created a new account to get back on here.. I always appreciate all the info shared through this site & my name states...K5'4Life...

Newbie here from Iowa. My name is Mike and I have Been Building a 84 blazer with a 12v Cummins swap for a couple years now. I’ll post a build thread shortly. Some of you may know of my build on instagram but wanted to join this community for more resources and events.

Nice build! Wish I could do the same engine with my m1008 but things will have to wait until my K5 is finished.

I suck at names, so when you start your build thread, drop your IG address in there too

Hey folks,

I've been around reading for awhile and even made a few posts, but never said howdy so here's my HOWDY! I have a Suburban to build for the family, an M1008 donor, new L31 vortec and a container full of parts. All I need is more time, energy and a younger body to get it started. Great inspiration on this site for sure!

Hey everybody. Just joined the forum and wanted to introduce myself. Been working on square bodies since I was a teen in the late 80's..behind the house, under a shade tree, etc. Marriage, kids, work, other priorities took me away from it for many, many years. Two years ago I felt like I was finally in a spot to enjoy K10s and K5's again. Began building a dedicated work shop three years ago and am now just finishing the interior wiring...doing everything myself. As for K5's, been out of it for a while. I've forgotten a lot. Looking forward to participating on the forum as I relearn.

One of my builds back in the early 90's. Always wore a welder's cap.

My new barn going up...still got the welder's cap.

Been working on this 1980 K10 for a few years now. A nice Southern truck.

Just pulled this home on Friday...a 1984 K5 that came out of Oregon. Solid Blazer in real nice shape. Tough to find in this condition in the Northeast.

Nice looking fleet and welcome aboard!

Hey everyone. Just joined as I purchased a 1982 6.2 Diesel Jimmy just a month ago. At first glance everything appeared to be original with the exception of an Earl Scheib paint job and an ‘89 front grill but the further I dig, the more I see this baby has been hacked by her previous owners. No clue how many she’s had or her actual mileage. Clock shows 25,xxx miles (125, 225, 325?!) but has an original CA blue plate. Factory window sticker shows it was delivered in VA Beach, VA back in 1982 so it must have been brought to CA by end of 1986 and has been registered ever since. Front suspension components need replacing but has Rough Country leaf springs up front and blocks out back. Carpet has been removed due to a cowl/windshield leak I found and have already POR-15’d the passenger floorboard. Has a few small holes in the passenger floorboard. The motor looks like it’s been pulled before as it’s been painted red. Previous owner started it for me with starting fluid which I learned online will kill a diesel engine. Wonder if that has anything to do with how hard it is to start up... perhaps there’s some internal damage? Transmission slips every now and then in 1st and everything that holds fluid leaks but the trans and radiator. Got quite the project but have already done some rust repair, have added a new steering wheel with a working horn (bought without a horn button) and have replaced the ignition lock cylinder. Looking forward to learning about these trucks via this forum and hopefully making some friends. Cheers!
