Is this a good idea? (truck purchasing scheme)

6.2 Diesel as DD?

Keep looking. Think stock. I went from 21mpg to 16mpg when I lifted my truck.

well it will eventually get a lift anyway. If i can get 15-16 mpg i would be fine with that. The silverado i was driving around for 2 years was only getting 16-18, so i know i can afford it. And lifted is just so much more fun.

I know its tough, but whatever truck you get from the 80s will be enough of a project without turning it into a project. Personally, I would focus on putting all your projecting time and money into the truck you already have. If you are going to be tempted to turn a driver you get into a project, you may want to buy something else.

i do understand where you are coming from. texas is probably out of the question anyway, so the search will continue.

Have you considered buying a tow rig? I don't remember if you will be wheeling the k5?

probably wont wheel it, and if i did i would drive it there. However, i have considered a tow rig for various other reasons. Dont really know what a good direction to go with that is. Budget is only about 5k, and would like to stay under it if possible. So that will not get me anything new (which im fine with, dont like new trucks). Then if i got an older 1 ton, it would most likely be a gasser, which means im looking at 12mpgs. Unless im missing something?

I doubt that truck in Texas gets 12 mpg even as a diesel.

I'd pass on that truck since you said you're looking for something to DD. As for his fuel mileage claim, sure that's doable with that setup in Texas, not in New York with hills and such. You'd be closer to 11/12 on the highway with it.

Joining late, but my 88 K5 got 3 years ago originally with 6.2, banks turbo, 4" lift, corp 10s w/ 4.10s, 33" tires, 700r4, np208. With that setup I was still getting 22mpg and loved it to cruise around town and on the highway. Originally for me with 148,000 miles on the odo too.

If you can find one with either the Banks kit or a 6.5 turbo swap, do it. I've driven a few NA 6.2s (admittedly never owned one) and they're not....ideal. With the Banks though I've got plenty of strength and pickup. Like has been said, nothing crazy, but more than adequate.

I know it doesn't get all that cold down there, but before the snow flies if you're into one of these, also as already said, make sure you have good batteries, a new lift pump, and a block heater. Those three things in good shape I start mine below -25C without too much trouble (manual glow plugs sometimes a must...).

I say go check that one out in person. Looks decent in the photos.

If I'm looking right it looks like it has 8-lug rears swapped in. That coupled with already having the banks setup puts you ahead in having decent power but still getting good mileage.

A K5 is sooooooo much better unless you actually need a pickup bed.

I just sold my other truck, so i want to replace it with one. Its not something i use everyday, but i want it there if i need it.

Okay, update. Found one about 2.5hrs west of me, apparently its been garaged its whole life a never seen a winter. Its a 2 wheel drive civilian 6.2 with 700r4 trans. completely stock. So that is probably best case scenario mpg wise.

Also have a lead on a 4wd one, that claims to be in the same condition, think i would prefer 4wd but the price is right on the c10 so im gonna go check it out.

This is my first time even looking at a diesel before, so what should i be looking out for? I know what to look for on these trucks, but diesels im sorta clueless...?
