Most folks know about this but this is the first video (albeit poor) I’ve seen posted. I figure it’ll get taken down pretty soon.

I'm always an innocent until proven guilty guy. Of which here I believe there is no one guilty. Motorsports are dangerous and large groups of spectators make it even more dangerous. I've been in spots where there are too many people around my truck. I also try my best as a spectator to not stand in front of a vehicle, but I know I have been guilty of being too close before. And too close can be 100yds sometimes, its all terrain dependent.

I had one incident last year that scared me good. It was a large obstacle with not much standing area, lots of people around and I needed throttle for it. When my truck hit the obstacle the one guy disappeared from my view. I cleared it and immediately asked someone else where he was.

The other thing though I didn't notice but saw on the video is that someone else was also close, and when I launched he had to move fast.

The bottom line is I failed that day in the driver seat, but owness goes on the spectators as well. It was a combination of things. Large obstacle, late in the day, new engine combo, and people all over. The inevitable thing in motorsports is that when they are grassroots you get to do cool things like sit on the side of the race courses, camp in the desert and watch the trucks etc.. Then someone gets hurt and after too many of those you can only watch it via drone on TV, and it sucks. I guess my point is demonizing people never really does the sport any good, spectator or driver.

why would it get taken down?

Just an assumption on my part. From what I’ve read, at the accident the police collected all of the videos from folks that were there and nothing has been posted until this. There is speculation of litigation (naturally) and the driver has not been on social media except to post a vague statement about it being an unfortunate situation.

This accident has been surprisingly different from most in today’s world, there have been no other videos or scene pics posted except of the Jeep in the hole/crack. Usually people can’t wait to post pics of the bloody ground etc. but there has been virtually zero. IMO it seems like some or all involved are trying to keep this off the internet.

So a bystander was hit, hurt, or killed by the Jeep? There seems to be an assumption everyone knows what happened...and key details are being left out as the assumption propagates.

Early reports said she lost her leg however I believe they ended up saved her leg.

I assumed he was in a low gear but the video doesn’t support that.

Sorry, I forget that most folks don’t go to Pirate anymore. There’s a big thread there and on some Jeep forums about the accident. The driver is a YouTuber name American Jeeper. Like Skunked said, a woman was hit in the accident and her leg badly hurt. She’s had a couple of surgeries but will have more plus rehab.

So at least one person injured. On a Taco site I read it was two, with one person losing a leg...
Yep, that's the general scope of what happened. A lady was flown to Grand Junction and did lose part of her leg at least as far as the initial reports went. I hadn't rechecked since EJS happened for an update on the victim though.

There's a risk for sure in any motorsport for the driver and spectator. Look at how far the Jeep went before he went into the spectators and then into the crack. Yes, a spectator can be too close. But this was well off to the side, nowhere near the Jeep's intended path. Instead of just enough of a throttle bump to pop over the rock he just stayed in it. He panicked, froze, but otherwise did nothing to curb the Jeep from hauling to the left.

The lady had some risk by being there but probably felt safe out of the way from where the trail led. But the driver held the responsibility to back off or hit the brakes.

It's an unfortunate turn of events for sure. But it does illustrate the new issue that comes with impressive vehicles that are extremely capable right off the showroom floor. Rubicons come with everything one needs to tackle the hardest trails but one thing, experience. This guy just didn't have the experience to understand what the Jeep was doing and how to stop it. Or for that matter, stop and take a different line when it didn't feel right or wasn't making forward progress. The dude is probably going to get sued for sure and his own videos may be his downfall. Because you all know damn well the YouTuber probably had 6 GoPro's going at the time of the accident.

Of course they are. And they should. It's bad press for Jeep's, bad press for Moab, bad press for EJS, and bad press for off roading in general. And guess what, CK5ers are squarely in that group. So even though it's fun to laugh it benefits us.

I don't think anyone is laughing, knowing someone was hurt...
We had a good laugh about it a few weeks ago. Dig around in the pad, meme threads. I don't quite remember where it was at.
Not at that lady being hurt, about the idiot driving the Jeep. Check out his YouTube page. American jeeper. He's basically a "bro" worried about buying all the Jeep bling.

The laughing part is idiots like this can get our land use permits revoked

That’s why I already dropped a thread in the Blazer bash section referencing this

The initial story was she was in the line of trail, and this shows she really was where by all accounts she should have been safe. Looks like the spotter was also trying to get him to shut it down

I just watched his videos. He is a tool looking for free stuff from jeep aftermarket.

Lack of skill and knowledge was obvious as he was on the gas. Just like the lady on Camelback in the K5 years ago. Panic while wheeling is never a good thing.

I have always wondered why jeep people always get out to watch everything.
