jeep stuff and now a volvo!

so the last couple of mornings i have had this knocking noise between 2000 and 3000rpm under light throttle. just before i shift. its kind of a quick 8-10 medium noise knocks......kinda like...like... like rod knock.

so i drained the oil to take a peak at it. it was VERY metallic. then some goldish looking flakes came out...:angry1:

so i guess instead of gears, sliders, frame stiffeners, i will be building an engine.

i ordered some rod bearings up. im going to slide them in and clean as much as i can out of the engine so i can go wheeling some more. it still
f--king sucks though, this is not how i planned out this build

thanks, but i have a core 96' long block i will be using. i traded the light bar that i took off for it.

well... i spent some money. i needed to make this engine last the winter. so i put some new rod bearings in. the old ones where junk. all the upper ones anyways. the crank was grooved more than i expected, but i went with it.
it still has a knock, but not as bad. im not sure if its rod or not. it might be somthing else, but it only happens while driving under light load between 2200 and 3000rpm

oil pressure is good. 20psi at hot idle. 40psi above 2000rpm, 50psi cold start

free oil
free oil filter

total dollars injected

water pump $20
frt. locker $253
rod bear. $37
oil pan gskt $28

did some snow wheeling with my brother with his xj and a freind with a jk on 33s. took the wife and the chicklets.

we went and found a hill with tire tracks that where about 10" deep. then used the tire tracks as a sled run.

then we continued up the hill until we found a road with no tracks. it was up to 18" deep on the road and 24" in the ditches....as my brother found out. ha ha.

I cant even see the vid or what ever that was posted and I KNOW its supertroopers:haha:

got some porting done on my spare cylinder head. preparing for the new engine.
straightened out the roof of the exhaust ports, blended the bowls, slimmed down the guide bosses. im leaving the intake ports alone. they dont even need port matched.
im not done yet. i have all the ports done. but only 3 cylinders for the bowls, then all the final polishing. already have about 4 hrs of work into it:doah:

Looks good! I always wanted to get into doing stuff like that.

more like getting into being patient as possible. i have 4 cylinders done- and im running out of steam. plus i still have the polishing of the exhaust side to do. i hope this will be worth it.....and i will never know for sure.

i have put about 500 miles on it since i put the bearings in, so i threw it up on the hoist today. no oil leaks. its been a long time since i have owned a 4.0 that didnt leak oil from somewhere. also the radiator was leaking a little......isnt any more :dunno:

whatever. im rolling with it until i figure out what the f--k that engine noise is. i have tried to duplicate it several times, but it wont do it unless im driving it:angry1:. its getting worse, so hopefully something will happen soon

I (kinda) have the same thing going on with the blazer. The folks on here have told me its probably piston slap. Start it up in the morning and you dont hear anything. but as soon as you actually take off, it has what sounds like a rod knock that lasts about a block or two and then goes slowly silent until it gets overnight cold again. Let it sit three hours, no noise. Let it sit 6 hours, noise.

Yeah thats piston slap.

It's so strange! I've never owned anything like that before. Other then that noise my engine is in really good shape! Plugs look perfect, bearings look perfect, and oil stays clean for a long time!
