Im really loving the two different timelines in this build.

I prefer an auto, BUT I haven't wheeled a rig with a manual and doubler yet. My 77 is going to be NV4500 203/205 and a hand throttle so I'll let you know if I have a preference after I get it done. To be honest I'd rather have an automatic 99% of the time on or off road, but the other 1% is when I'm letting my inner teenager jam some gears. IMHO a well built automatic can do amazing things. The price you pay sucks though... Even after nearly 6k into a trans for my 07 cummins I was amazed how good it worked for everything. Pulling, driving like teenager, and normal driving.

I haven't done any hard wheeling with a standard, but I have to admit I like running through the gears on the wife's F150. It does fine in the snowy stuff, and mild trails, just pic the gear you want and go with it to reduce the # of shifts. No doubler but the transmission and axle gears are a nice mix.

Now if I had the money, I would get a magnum box to put between an NV4500 and a 205. But.... I don't. And I have this stuff here.
The down side to the SM465 is changing direction is not fast sometimes. The hand throttle takes care of a lot, but it doesn't slide into gear super smooth every time.

Is it a huge deal? No. But will I make a lot selling the 700R4/ doubler? No. So why not use it.

Oh and I have the triple stick, the 205 section is clocked up some, AND I have both shafts for it to go into a K5 with 1350 CV joints at the case.

Honestly only thought 3x that something needed to be different. In actuality for where I was wheeling, a 241 with the extra gearing would have solved 90%. I rode the clutch to get out a few spots, but it always worked

My crawler has an auto and it works great but with a 241/241 and 7.4:1 low low when you put it in gear it pulls hard enough to try and push through the brakes. so all in all it won't be a whole lot worse than a manual with a doubler other than not being completely direct drive. There are times I have to grab neutral in tight spots.

I've wheeled with both and really don't have much preference either way. I do love the ZF5 in my current rig since It can be shifted lightening fast, I routinely go from 2nd to 3rd in the middle of hill climbs with it. My old 465 wasn't nearly as forgiving of such treatment lol

You could just sell the TH700R4/4L60 and swap input gears in your doubler.

Or take the woman's way out........

Martin
Gee, how did I know that Martin would say something about this???

LMAO! !!!

So still missing old K5 pictures since basement remodel.
Any new pictures?

Nope, I am slacking on my stuff. Been too dang busy at work, and I pinched a nerve in my back a couple of weeks ago. So it had been annoying having a tingle in my arm....

Go get sorted out before you end up like me with permanent damage
