Jimmy rebuild thread

Now that I am at my computer....

I have come to the conclusion, after talking with Eileen and some friends, that I should not be traveling long distances alone anymore. I am still having memory issues and getting lost. Fatigue and no energy. Lack of will to do anything. At least like I used to. This has not been a knee jerk discission. Mark and I have been discussing each of us doing something different for a couple of years. Part of why we turned BB over to Rob. He was given the family heirloom race car. I had been leaning that direction even before that.

There is a lack of close wheeling other than mud. I hate mud. Was tromping around in it this morning while working on the backhoe. That is another story. The Jimmy is not being used and I really don't see it getting used. No one wants what I built. Little axles and anemic drive train. Everyone wants tons and 40's. Selling it hole for any kind of money is far fetched. I can get as much for the shocks and bump stops as I can for the entire running truck.

I have done the wheeling thing long enough. I get bored doing the same thing over again. And I have done everything the Jimmy is capable of and beyond in some instances.

Now for the future.

I have an 1/8th mile drag strip 8 miles from my house. The new owners are doing a bunch of upgrades already. Signed a 5 year contract with IHRA. A 1/4 mile strip 45 minutes away. An old 1/8th mile track being re-opened 2 hours from me in WV. 3 more within 3 hours drive time. That I can handle.

As the jimmy sits, it has a full cage. Stripped frame and supper ridged. Currie Extreme Duty rear housing with their 9+ nodular center section, 4.56:1and a 35 spline Detroit. Replacing the axles with 5 lug, one of the existing is bent. Strip some of the cage out that is not needed, Fiberglass 1/4's, fenders and hood. Possibly a straight axle front end. I hope to get it down to about 4k pounds. We will see. Tremec 5 speed possibly. I have a line on a freshly rebuilt Lenco 3 speed, but I really want overdrive for Drag N Drive events. Power plant will be either one of my 454's or the LQ9. Not sure yet.

I have been looking at built cars for sale. But I am buying an unknown car that I will still have to go through.

So, a lot to think about. It will not happen in a hurry. I have work. A house to build. And a boat to finish. I really want to swap the LT1/L86 into Fugly also. Lots of plans. No energy or time.

Wish me luck and bump this thread every now and then to move me along.

I like it, and was exactly what I was thinking you would do.

It's weird but fits exactly what you like and once again people will tell you that wont work.

Sounds like a solid plan. Makes me happy pants the Jimmy is gonna get used, one way or another.

Talk about a transformation. If you do a drag n drive with it you’ll need to have some pics of the Jimmy displayed in the pits of it in its old element out on the rocks and flying in the desert.

We already know the history, but it would blow peoples minds you had this thing catching air and crawling and now it’s going to be hauling ass.

That would start some conversations. But I'm not a talker and don't like people.

That's a great plan. What's the front suspension plan? 1/2 ton stock 2wd stuff or something else? I always wanted to build a 2wd front axle using 4wd inner Cs and all the stuff out from there and just a straight tube like a trailer axle with some stock height or low lift springs. Could even go spring under also.

I fully get where you are coming from, lack of public lands and good wheeling down here is a huge bummer, it took alot of back and forth in my head to decide to part my suburban. It was fun, but driving it long distance was way to draining trying to keep it going.
Since no one down here really builds, I've been low key looking for something fun to drop my 454 in since it won't sell.

I can understand wanting to take things in another direction and I too have come to realize it's easier to work with what you've already got and know how it was built.

Dug the Jimmy out for an impromptu wheeling trip. Last time out was almost a year ago and it had water in the floors.

Pumped the tires up, jump started it. Fired right up. Check fluids. Cleaned the windows .Put 10 gallons of gas in. Drove to the gas station, put 16 more gallons in. 26 gallons in a badly dented tank. It was on fumes.

Drove just fine. 180 miles for 9 miles of smooth dirt road. Over landing sucks.

Only good thing was, it dumped out on Tail of the Dragon.

I apologize about the video quality. But.
