Just picked up a crew cab.. Let the repairs begin...

i know they make one. thats what i need.
i just measured my truck, and the inside of the spring is only 1-5/8" from the frame and in that picture it looks more like 3". maybe its just the picture, but it looks funny.
i agree with crawdaddy, that a 3/4 ton axle was prob easier to deal with than a drw axle.
I want to see pics of the rear spring forward hangers and shots of the rear shock mounts on the axle housing. And an overall view of the rearend from looking at the cover.

Then I want crawdaddy to measure the center pin-to-center pin distance on the rear, too.

From looking around under there yesterday, the rear axle spring perches and shock mounts have been moved on the axle. It looks like the frame is still factory mounting locations. I will shoot some pics to clarify. Also thanks a bunch to you guys for helping me decode this truck.

Ok here are the pics of the rear. Its hard to tell in the pics but the shock mounts were moved on the axle. The frame mounts look stock.

As soon as it warms up around here I am going to pull the bed, strip, box, and paint the rear (cab back) of the frame and components. Move the gas tank out of the tool box.:haha: And put it between the frame rails. Thinking of doing a burb tank so it would be 40 gal. I have another 14bff with 4.10's, disc conversion, and a detroit that I will swap in.

On the rear axle when I do the swap is there a better way to mount the shocks on the frame or do most stick with the factory location. I was thinking of something outside the frame rail but not sure.:dunno:

cant go outside frame on shocks.

springs are in 1" per side on true 1tons . wont fit shock up threw frame past springs.

and if you go side saddle tank its going to need to be a shortbed 15 gal tank or it will be to long to fit.

if me and you can go 30-40 gal burb tank or 30 gal blazer same tank.

easy to pop up in there with few mods.

CarFax says:

VIN: 1GCHK34W2ES178095 Vehicle: 1984 CHEVROLET K30
and

VIN: 1GBHR33J2JJ123040 Vehicle: 1988 CHEVROLET R30
Hope that helps! :D

Well time to get started working on the truck. My CL deal of the day, picked these two doors up for $30. Gonna have to switch them over to manual so I will have to replace the panels. Also got an 87 front clip in just as good of shape as the doors for $75. :D:woot::woot:

Id hang on to those door panels, or at least sell them to someone restoring a sub or CC. those doors look damn nice.

Good score!

Sorry dude, bumping your build thread since ya pmed me, i remembered when ya got this truck and i like :waytogo:

Guys, also remember an 85 wouldnt have an an np203, so that crossmember was probably from their donor truck.

I'll take a stab at the frame cuttin'.

My guess is that the truck was converted to 4x4 at some point, then later on someone decided to put a short bed on it. It would explain the two splices, and why they were plated in two different ways.

The frame was a 1984 4wd to start.

Exactly.

I went back up a few posts and read the 2 different VIN numbers again.

Since its been a while I browsed this thread, tell me again what these VIN's were found on other than CarFax.

Was the '84 the frame or the cab? What was the '88 found on?

i have the vins decode, but bascly the cab is an 88, 2wd, 1 ton, crew cab, 6.2 diesel, assy. plant was janesville, WI, and the frame is a 84, 4wd, 1 ton, crew cab, 454 bb, assy. plant was st.louis, MO. both chevys made in the us not gmc or canadan. last 6 of each vin is the serael number.

Haven't had a chance to do much to it yet. I put those doors on. Got them swapped over from power to manual, and was able to use the same panels.:woot:
Went to rebuild the column cause it was loose at the tilt, and someone had already tried and screwed it all up. Ended up buying a used on out of a burb of CL for 40. Went threw it just to make sure it was good. Then put it and a xj steering shaft on. Waiting for better weather to pull the bed off and really get started.

Ok, the cab is an '88 and the frame is an '84.

Is the '84 frame a true crewcab frame of just a standard 131.5" wheelbase K30 frame?

If its the standard frame, I'm beginning to wonder if someone cut out the 2wd frame section of the '88 to add/graft onto the '84 frame to make it longer to fit the crewcab body.

And then they shortened the frame to fit a shortbed.

According to that decoded vin that Indy4x4 did it was a crew cab.

Damn, wished I had my GM book for decoding VIN's.

I'm betting the '84 frame was a 131.5" wheelbase. It had to be in order to have all those splices you show in the pics. I can't think of anything else why someone would go thru all that trouble.

I think at some point, 2 really heavy motorcycles with 2 really heavy riders plowed square into the sides of whatever this truck was, exactly on either side at the same time. They swapped bodies and cut out the sharp dents in the frame left by the motorcycles.

makes perfect sense

but I like this project, it's starting out very interesting and nothings been done :)
