K10: Built HP60/241-205 Doubler/tons of tube

Knuckles are cast steel right? So you can use a normal wire/rod and just preheat and allow slow cooling? Never really understood welding cast stuff? I should probably beef up my knuckles and for $40 why not? Need to get in there to do my kingpins anyway

Yes they are weldable with regular steel filler. I pre heated, tacked the piece on then heated the plates and beat them to conform to the knuckle, then burned it all in. Lastly I warmed the whole knuckle back up so it was even and then allowed it to sit and cool all the way down on its own.

I'm in the middle of finishing these. I'll post pics when I'm done.

Well I was busy with stuff around the house this morning and didn't get started on the knuckles until late this afternoon. I finished up the first knuckle and when I was working on the second knuckle I was on literally my last pass (needed to weld about 4-5") and I RAN OUT OF WIRE! Grrr, that stuff ticks me off more than just about anything, especially on a part that's all pre-heated and welding perfect!

So I looked at my phone and it was 4:45, there is a welding shop open until 5:00 but they're all the way across town so I turned everything off and ran out the door hoping to make it in time. I pull up at 5:02 according to the clock in my truck and it's a ghost town. :(

So I'll have to finish Monday after work I guess.

Here's the knuckle I finished...

FWIW, I've bought welding wire at ACE Hardware, and I believe they carry it at Home Depot and the like as well.

Yeah I thought about going by lowes but I like pinnacle wire and I figured they wouldnt have it. Not like thats all thats holding this thing up though, there is plenty to do.

I buy all my Lincoln wire from homo depot.. it's just the most convenient place to hit too...

I put a new spool of wire in the welder and finished the last pass on the second knuckle.

Threw some primer on the knuckles, new engine mounts and diff cover until I can figure out my new color for the truck. I need to install the new engine mounts from Kert and beyond that I don't have much to do until I get the axles done. I need to call WFO and see what they're schedule is like for a saturday trip up to their shop to get some work done.
I need to pull the fuel cell and finish the rear cage and work on more storage but not sure if I want to do that until after I get the drivetrain stuff done. For now, how about a picture of some primer! I know, too exciting. :)

Whats on the schedule for when you get to WFO?

Get a new 14ff from them so I can sell my axles as a set... The 14 bolt will get a detroit and 5.38's and be stock otherwise for now. The '79 HP60 housing I'm working on right now will get an ARB and 5.38's.
I sold my stock shafts and already have some Yukon 35 spline cromo outers for it. I got a good quote from a shop on Pirate for the cromo inners I'm missing so I'll get those ordered up soon too.

Need to get some warn 35 spline hubs as well.

Basically to answer your question gears and lockers at WFO. They gave me the best quote by a long shot on parts and labor. I talked to him back in December so I need to call and see if the deal still stands and what their schedule is like.

Well with the chromo inners outers, knuckle strengthening I figured it was something big.

Not big by today's standards. I just don't want to break.
I'll start used tire shopping on pirate once I get everything else done and see what I find for a good deal.

I finally made a decision on a color for stuff and picked up a bunch tonight...

Not sure what's on the agenda for this weekend. Maybe finish stripping the 60 housing and tinker on the back of the truck. I need to pull the fuel cell and add a couple pieces of straight tube to the back behind the cab.

I went and got the dodge aligned this morning, it wasn't too bad but was starting to pull a little bit. Firestone has a special right now on a LIFETIME alignment for $149.99, I think I'm going to make out on that deal over time. :)

Came home and pulled the steering box off the frame and got the ORD weld in frame brace put in place. It was pretty close but required a bit of massaging to make it fit nice and tight. I had to enlarge the holes for the bolts a hair as well because they weren't punched out in the right spot.

I got some paint thrown on some parts late last night too...

While I was working on the frame brace a box showed up with my 205 support ring. I'm going to use this off the back of the case to support the back of the doubler.

That blue is going to look pretty good. Are you doing a 52 swap sometime?

I thought so, you should of seen me standing in the paint isle trying to decide.

Nope, no 52's for me. I'm looking into some custom packs but not until all this is done. Probably be after all our wheelin' this summer.
