K10: Built HP60/241-205 Doubler/tons of tube

I still think those hubs have got to be the weak link with your axle though. You should have good luck with them on 40's though, depending on how you drive.

Well apparently I'm never going to get past one of the most basic parts of this build. I'm now tearing the front down to the knuckles for the third time. I have no idea how but in all this I forgot/didn't realize I was missing the dust seal on the stub shafts that seals up against the back of the spindles.
So I ordered up the Spicer kit that has those and the thrust bushing (used to be brass but now they're plastic), the inner seal next to the bearing and the bearing itself. Should be here Tuesday. :(
I was camping all weekend but when I got back I mustered up the energy to tear the front end back down so it's ready to go when the seals show up.
I put the hubs on before I realized what was going on and they're money. The fit was perfect and everything slipped in smoothly.

I'm starting to hate this truck. :doah:

You've had the hammer down in this build for quite some time now. Take a little break, and get back to it in a week. If its not fun, and you continue...you'll burn out on it.

Truck is coming along awesome, don't beat yourself up.

Keep it up.

Wish I could, not only can I not take a break but I need to pick up the pace. Reservations for our annual trip to Pismo are going to be here before I know it (end of July) and I need to get it done at least a few days before then to get some miles put on the new gears and get the oil changed out in the axles.

It's getting there. Front end will be back together complete hub to hub this week. I need to mount the ARB compressor and hook up the line but I already have it at least. The last big step is getting the doubler in and one little crossmember built for that. Then drop it off to get exhaust done and build driveshafts.
Oh, and wheels but that's no biggie, just need to do it. Where's the exhausted, broke and worn out smiley?

What springs are you running, Avery?
And how do you like them/ ride characteristics in the sand?

Rear are 57" ford springs and with the shackle flip they're great, super soft. But they were horrible for axle wrap until I setup the traction bar but that fixed it.
Fronts are just off the shelf 4" superlifts for now. I have plans for that down the road but for now they get the job done.

I think you're about the only guy on this site that has such a trick front axle with crossover and all the bells and whistles that's still running off-the-shelf lift springs up front. I'm expecting to see some cool coilovers or something (with blue springs of course) on there in the future.

You know this was what I had in mind a while ago but the more I wheel the more I realize that leaves are fine for me. I'd like to get this truck "done" with the built drivetrain, good interior and good setup for camping then maybe concentrate on a go fast rig for playing in the dunes.
I figure why make this truck do everything so so, instead just set it up as a reliable wheeler and build something else that's only purpose is to go fast.

Anywhoo, I got some work done tonight. Pulled the old headers and they're stupid little rusty bolts, cleaned up the head a little (had to run a tap through a few holes to get them all cleaned up) and got the new headers on with studs. I won't ever use bolts again, it wasn't a walk in the park but so much easier than trying to line up the bolts. Plus they kinda hold the headers so you have two hands free to work.

They fixed my clearance issue with the high pinion, there's plenty of room to route the exhaust out of the way now. Only problem I see is they look way too nice up against my tired little small block. :doah:

I think tomorrow night I'll get the front end put back together with the new seals (should be here tomorrow according to the tracking number) so that the only thing on my plate from there on out is getting the doubler in.

Oh, and I need to get a couple new plug wires with straight boots so they don't have to be routed all funny. Just tied them up temporarily so it'll run and I can continue to get stuff done. :)

Careful with the plug wires! I've burned quite a few sets on my headers....get a good organization system for them.

I know, I know. :doah:

My old organization system was Autozone lifetime warranty wires so when I burned them up I swapped them out. :D

I had them all situated with my old headers where they didn't get burned at all this past year (headers have been on for two years).

"Of course i'm not running headers! The clip failed, the wire fell off the plug....THEN it burned. ":haha:

Nah they don't even care/ask anymore. The guys at my local Autozone are cool with whatever.
I swapped a plug wire out at Pismo one time last summer too and they didn't ask either. He just pulled the one I needed out of a new box and put my burnt up wire in the new box and put it in the pile to go back. I signed and walked out.

Yeah I don't see anything wrong with the leaves you've got. I prefer Tuff Country EZ ride 4" springs over Superlift springs though. TCs ride much better to me, no matter what kind of shocks you're running.

As far as the headers being mounted to the studs, are you doing anything special to keep them from loosening up from the heat? I had an old Toyota that had a combination of studs and bolts for the headers and the nuts on the studs had a tendency to loosen up and blow the header gasket. Of course you don't have to worry about that with yours. :D

Just lock washers, I'll keep an eye on them and see how they hold.

Think you're having a dejavu moment? Nope this is just the third time this front end has been torn apart only to be put back together and look exactly the same from the outside. :)

I got the Spicer seal kit in the mail from WFO today and got to work. I got everything put back together with all the pieces and what do ya' know, now it all lines up and works. The hubs went back together smoothly and the driver's side engages/disengages like butter. The passenger side works but is a hair tighter, I bet after some run time it'll all wear in nicely.

So that's that... exhaust on my end is done, front end is done, I guess now it's onto the doubler and the small stuff. I need to get the ARB compressor mounted and get the line run to the front end and get some brake lines made up hopefully in time for this weekend.

I bet you can tear that thing down and reassemble it in about 15 minutes now! Blindfolded! :D

It's almost ready for action! :thumb:

I know he can! :waytogo:

It get's to be second nature.
I can't wait for my differential course at school.

Lord knows I've rebuilt so many....
I'll finally get to rest! :thumb:

As always, love the build Avery!

I unpacked and screwed together my ARB compressor then started on a little mounting box for it. Nothing fancy but it will bolt to the firewall by my battery.
Should give it a little protection from debris coming up underneath since I don't have wheel wells anymore. I'll get it finished up tomorrow after work.
I measured and figured out my brake lines tonight too. I'll swing by my place that makes them and have some whipped up to put on this weekend.
