K10: Built HP60/241-205 Doubler/tons of tube

57" Ford springs out of an early 90's half ton. They're holding up great and flex really well.

I thought they were Fords, I need to do something softer in the rear of mine and from your pics it looked like yours works well :D

Out of curiosity, have you ever weighed your rig?

Oh, and one last time....thanks for recommending AFI, we had a trip 2 weeks ago and all I can say is WOW what a difference over the old carb :woot: :waytogo:

Before the 60, doubler and interior cage it was 3995. I've gutted more stuff and obviously added weight with the above mentioned stuff. I bet I'm about 4,500.

Nice work, I'm drooling all over the key board.

Thanks for the kind words. I'll fire this thread back up after the first of the year when I take care of the front.
I need to pull the front clip off, cage it all out and get some snazzy new sheetmetal cut and put into place.

Pulled some stuff apart to do some maintenance and try to soften up this spring pack.

Went through the steering and checked for loose hardware (one of my TRE's was really loose) and checked kingpins/steering arms for tightness.

I've worn out some holes on the front spring hangers so I need to weld them up and reinforce them before the springs go back in. Also the rear shackle bushings are shot so tomorrow I'll run down to Napa and grab some new ones. I don't want to mess with longer springs or anything else right now, just freshen up what's here and has been working.

I'm going to use a combination of leaves out of these 4" lift springs and some stock leaves to hopefully soften things up. Might wear them out sooner than later but I'll deal with that when it comes up.

Wow, I weighed the K30 and with 3/4 tank of fuel and an empty bed it is right at 6k !!! Granted it's a K30 w/a 454/400 and I'm sure my tire/wheel combo is heavier.......but I didn't think there would be such a difference between our rigs.

Awesome jackstands! Did you make those?

Edit: Now I'm trapped reading your whole thread. Saw the jackstand build on page 10. :thumb:

Got the front end buttoned up tonight. New 4" Tuff Country EZ ride springs that I added a little leaf out of another pack and my zero rate to. It sits about 1/2" higher than before so once they settle it should be around my old ride height but obviously a lot softer.

My shackles had 7/16" holes for the bolt that goes through the frame end and 9/16" holes for the rear of the leaf spring but these new packs use a 7/16" bolt so I welded up and drilled fresh holes in the shackles to accommodate. Also put in some Energy Suspension Poly bushings and new sleeves on the frame end.

Congrats on making the calendar Avery! Truck is looking great, and that place you went wheeling last (forgot the name) looks sooo beautiful!!!

Why no 52s.

I don't want to mess with the headaches that go along with them. Everything in the front end is setup for this height and length spring. When I put major effort into front end changes it better include some coilovers. :D

Thanks, I know I made it (my friend did too, chevysmithz71) but my calendar isn't here yet

Haven't seen it, but good work! You deserve it. From where your truck started, to where it is now, you are becoming the poster child for the goals of the members here.

Keep it up!

To add to that:

Why no 52s.

From my experience:

1. Change everything in front end to go to 52"s.

2. Realize truck wallows like a drunken hippopotamus in mating season. Flex is good in moderation, but at some point your truck bounces like a lowrider on meth -- and that's just at low speed.

3. Change everything in front end back to where it was.

Avery is very wise to skip steps #1 and #2.

I bet your feet were cold. Nice pics too. I like that last one the most. Calendar shot for next year.

Feet weren't bad until I got back in the truck to drive home. My hands were pretty cold though when I had to pull the gloves off. Even without the windows/doors on that little Summit "Mojave" style heater definitely takes the edge off of it in the cab.

Oh and I grenaded the T-Case in my dodge on the way up there. I got stuck on an icy road going up hill and when I went to engage it into 4wd I eased out on the clutch in 1st and it sounded like someone let a box of marbles loose in there. It's been giving me problems for a while and I think the immense torque it was under with the weight of the trailer and taking off up hill just did it in.
If I leave it in 2wd it's fine (for now) but 4wd high/low are a no go. So that'll have to be dealt with here pretty quick.
