KansasTwisters 86 k5: (8/13/2011 axles ready to go in, Diff covers painted)

Why do you want the tires to stick out of the fenders??? To sandblast your paint? To cause them to rub under articulation?

Martin

startin to come together good man.you can go to a 15 x10 but it will still sit in the wheel well the same unless you change the backspacing.it will wear out the wheel bearings faster and as martin said will throw unwanted crud onto the truck if it sticks out of the wheelwell.i had 15x8 with 35x12.5 and it sits flush with the wheelwell on a 4 inch backspaced rim.it looks like you are pretty close without getting a lift right now to rubbin if you wheeled it.

YES!!!,
and im not rock crawling, so idk how much articulation their will really be. Dunes is dunes, go up em, go down em. Pretty much all their is to it.

Well, after digging through a stack of 100+ titles trying to find the right one, i finally located the title in a random envelope inside the house. Got it insured and tagged, and its parked outside my girlfriends apartments right now. Steering is a little loose, gonna have to see whats up with that, but my column is wobly as hell.

Its a crazy feeling, and man this truck runs good. i almost doubt it has 3.08 gears in the back, something i need to check.

Glad to see ya got it running.......and on a short note.....

It's about time

And why does this color look so familiar?

wheels87k5, i wish mine was an 87 with as good of paint as yours! Efi and nice paint, winner winner chicken dinner!

Oh, and the k5 likes to crab walk in the mud. Went offroading with a jeep buddy, and a 95 k10 was there too but he hardly got his dirty even though he had some big ol' mud terrains and was talking a bunch of trash. That 350 in the k5 sounds so good spinning at 5k. All the 18 year olds that were there swore it was a built motor, not bad for a junkyard motor with a cam :D

I think this may be the last time for a while that i take it "mudding". It was fun, didnt break anything, but my power steering gearbox started leaking. Had a blast, but I would rather go crawl trails than sling mud to be honest. And the 50 dollars in gas I used is missed dearly by myself. Note to self: when trying to show off, remember to roll up your window first. It was fine when i was in 2wd and going around this mud spot, then i got stopped, had to put it in 4 high with wheel cranked to the left, when i straightened out i got my left arm coated in mud! Luckily my mint backseat was spared haha.

Have you been to Tuttle yet? It isn't a very long drive form Lawrence.

Not with the k5. I did when i was younger with my brother in his 91 yj. Im trying to find a day when my buddy with a 93 xj isnt busy and wants to go out. That or grab my indian buddy who lives in manhatten on the way. Just i work s, m, w, f, and tues/thurs im usually doing homework.

Hey man I don't like mud either lol, i try to keep out of it, I did like 3 doughnuts the other day in a lil mud, and it took 10 seconds to have 8 inches of mud coated under the truck, took a good 30 min and about 5 dollars in quarters to get it off lol. (its still freezing at nights here so I didnt want to hook the hose up yet, and then drain it).

But I heard from a buddy, that if you put baby oil in a spray bottle and coat the underside the mud will fall right off, so if i do ever plan to go into mud ima try it, I guess it works really well.

These are from a few weeks ago, but finally posting them, been part busy, part lazy. DD'd the k5 till it started getting 90+ this week, and the 83 has ac. Kinda debating if I wanna fix the ac on the k5 or not, but the c10 is going just fine for daily use, and gets better gas mileage anyway.

Current goals for k5:
Take carpet out, fix rust, make new side panels from abs and install new speakers
Brakes are making a little nosie and I want to replace the rubber lines because I dont think the rears are working but everything looked good both times I had them apart so it could be a line collapsing from age.

Long term current plans
3/4 tons with 4.56
either 4 or 6 inch lift, bds front shackle flip rear
37" hummer radials with the 16.5x8.25 stock wheels i have
possibly crossover

Photos were taken for a photo class on a low maintence/abandoned road south of town (As you notice the creek took over the roadway), and the first picture was at another creek but around the same lake. Figured id post a shot of my ugly mug with the truck, I had rolled out of bed grabbed the camera, picked up my girl and my sister and hit the highway so im far from dressed to impress.

Bought a 4.10 rear with a powertrax no slip, stock rear driveshaft and a front 3.42 with a set of new warn premiums from willie (Wheels87k5) and took some time today and tore the front end down so I can swap it to a 4.10 setup. I'm debating either leaving it open or swapping in a second gen camaro limited slip unit, would be better than a locker on the front as far as steering goes but I'm not sure if it would be of any benefit. I got more than a few spares laying around so it would be free to swap in and I'm gonna be in there anyway. Thoughts?

Never tore a front axle down this far, It was a good learning experience.

Heya....I know you'll really like the 4.10s. And we made it home safely and lighter. :waytogo:

If it's anything like the dana 60, swapping gears won't be that bad....unless the front 10bolt has the crush sleeve. Still not bad...just gotta know when to say when for the preload. Go past the limit and you'll have to do it again.

I did some searching a while back on this and it seems Detroit and Powertrax were the choice. If the Track lock in the dana 60 doesn't perform then I'll try one or the other.

I like the powertrax no-slip that's in the rear 10bolt. So maybe the same for the front?

Well since this is gonna be my winter driver, aj and russell have convinced me I'm just gonna leave it open up front. Ideally an air locker or e locker would be perfect, but I'm not gonna drop that kinda money down for this axle, especially since it will kill front shafts like 12 gauges on zombies. Eventually I plan to dana 60/14b it so these axles won't be in forever.

Thats gonna fukin haul ass with 4.10s

I honestly plan on taking it to the test and tune night at the local drag strip and running it to see what she will do. Already runs like a raped ape, when I drop it in 4 low with front hubs unlocked it spun till 2 and chirped third, and I wasn't even flooring it.

Drag strips and dynos are both dream crushers.

My 160k ignored maintenance 305 4 speed camaro did 17.3 consistently, so trust me if it can go faster than that I'd be happy. New block and bottom end is currently in the machine shop and supposed to be finished pretty soon. (350 bored 30, flat top with pink rods, 1182 crank, should be like 10.5 to one with dart iron eagle platinum heads, 507 lift isky cam, 750 holley and on top of a edelbrock rpm air gap, should be a lot more potent)
