Lighting Issues

Start tracing the power wire backwards until you get power and then repair the damaged/shorted wire.

OK...update

Everything is working now EXCEPT for the drivers side front turn signals

All lights come on now that are supposed to when I turn on the headlights.

I reseated the firewall harness buckle...I didn't have it tight and fully seated before...it is now.

still no turn signal on front drivers side.

Let me clarify...the front signal light do come on when I turn the headlights on...so the wiring is good.

Now what would cause the blinker not to work on the front but it does on the back?

This is only a one way test. If its positive, then there is your trouble. If not it could still be wrong.

Turn on the headlights. If the front driver side parking light lights up, look to see if the turn signal indicator for that side is glowing slightly in the dash.

If so, then the front socket is not grounded right, or the ground connector in the socket is bad.
The front parking light will light with a bad ground, but it gets it's ground through the turn signal filament.
But, the turn signal will not go back the other way.

OK

Yes the front lights come on

No the turn signals do not glow...I tested in a dark garage

It could still be a bad ground at that one socket, sometimes the indicators don't glow bright enough to see, especially if the lens is old and dark.
Otherwise, it may still be a firewall connection, or a turn signal switch problem.

But the thing to remember, is with the two filaments in that one bulb, it can light up with a bad ground.

Also try wiggling the turn signal lever while it is blinking on that side to see if the front one blinks briefly.

I wiggled the turn signal arm and nothing....I replaced the turn signal thing and harness in the steering column last year...so all that stuff is new

I grounded the socket directly to the battery...nothing

What else? I replaced the turn signal barrel shaped things that fit into the fuse block last year....

I have pinpointed the approximate area of the problem.

There is a black, and a brown, and a light blue wire that goes to the front left parking light.
The headlight or "solid" feed goes through the brown wire.

The turn signal feed goes through the light blue wire.

I located the light blue wire in the steering column and there is power. There is power in this light blue wire down to the fuse block. That's where it stops...there is no power on the other side of the firewall buckle.

There was a bunch of thick brown grease in the lighting harness...I thought that was supposed to stay in there...could there be too much grease causing no contact on whatever tab that light blue wire is on? :dunno:

Solved....and thanks for the help.

Everything was pointing to the lighting harness buckle...I pulled the whole buckle off the firewall and seperated them and then tried to put only the lighting harness on...it wouldn't seat more than 80%.

I pushed and wiggled it until I got it 100% seated and then removed it and did that about a dozen more times until it went in easier.

Then I put the whole harness buckle back on.

Everything works now, including the wiper motor. :woot:

I hate electrical problems.....but I guess it wasn't a total wasted weekend...I got star washers on all the ground points, and I ran a new wire through the harness from the battery ground to the dash ground tree. I even put a star washer on the battery to frame ground. Everything is so much brighter now...all the lights are brighter.

Congrats. Now finish the tailgate and send it to paint.

That's the idea...now I got brake lights and turn signals....I guess I need to attach a seat belt and maybe the rear bumper...then I can take it for an estimate...

Hey y5mgisi did you have any trouble with debris when you drove without a windshield?

Hate to bring this post back up....but last week all my lights were working....this week all are working except for the backup/reverse lights....

The firewall connector is solidly in place.

The bulbs look fine....fuse looks fine....don't know what could have happened...it has just sat in the garage all week....

That's the logical first place to look I guess...how do you know if it just needs adjusting or if it's bad?

You do see my name, right??:D

I'm guessing you have the Turbo 350 or 400 in that thing, and I have no idea where the switch is.

On a Ford C6, its on the side of the transmission where the shift selector goes in.
And on those, its also the neutral/park safety switch. If it gives any trouble, you replace it because it gets mud and water in it after a while.

On yours, it works the same way, just closes two contacts when you hit reverse.
But, I don't know if its on the transmission or the shifter column. I'm sure someone else will jump in shortly with the answer if they don't while I am typing this.

But when you find it, just short across the two wires and see if the lights come on.

I suppose it might ground one wire, but either way it should be obvious.

I'll check my schematic and see if it shows a location.

OK, schematic is not real clear on the location, but its shown in the "cab" section, and shows an arc shaped switch which makes me think its on the column, probably under the dash, close to the starter switch.

And it is a combination park/neutral backup light switch.

I bet the wires plug into it in one piece. The plug might be loose.

It is on top of the column right near the firewall...so you are saying to pull the wire conector and short it with something...maybe a paperclip?
