Looking for transmission advice, TH350 or SM465

It seems like the auto guys are equally worked up unless your blind lol. Thats ok though! Everyone likes what they like and im down with anyones choice as long as you can reliably rock what you have.

I know guys who drive a 465 to the trail and back...no breaking and no babying it. I know people who seem to have killer luck with autos too...no over heat at all even with the bs oem cooler. I cant seem to do it, I accept that and now I run a 465. Maybe one day my luck will change with autos. I have a feeling ill be getting into the drag racing scene within the next few years, which means ill probably have to get my auto funk put by the wayside and run one. Manual valve body ftmfw.

You go there, call me first if you're running a GM car. I can cut you to the chase. 15 years of drag racing, I might know something useful

Encabulator.

Man, you can't even spell straight!

And WTF else did you expect out of me???

I drove 250 miles each way to buy an ugly K5 , that I think is cool! !!

(Even though it had a 4 speed! )
LMAO!

Oh boy a manual vs auto thread!! :D

Manuals = Towing, driving around town on the weekend, light wheeling, If you like replacing driveline parts, if you live with no traffic
Autos = Towing, driving every day, hard technical wheelin (Including mud) if don't like replacing driveline parts, if you drive with a lot of traffic

Both have there place.

What are you people doing to over heat an auto? Ever hear of running the right size cooler? I've ran the same TH350 for the 16 years...In the mud, in the rocks with zero problems....And yes, it is a rebuild....It cost me $250 to get done.
I do have a manual in my Jeep.....It's fun to drive to a point.

I always find it funny to see the manual only type get all worked up....You know, only women drive autos and us manly men like sticks .I think they they are only over compensating to hide their true feelings when it comes to autos.:D:D

Holy Shiz, could not have said it any better....some might think you are attacking their 3 pedal manhood with strong words like that, bahahaha

I don't want people to think I don't like manuals. I'm swapping from a TH400 to a NV4500 right now in my crew cab because for my uses, it's the better choice. But for my uses with my wheeler, the auto is the far better choice. It's just when u guys get all crazy and start saying thing like "the 465 is going to be the better choice in almost all wheeling circumstances" when you are just begging for people to disagree with you. So if that is your goal....well done.

Oh, and to answer the response of why all Toyota guys are running manuals, that's mainly cause of two things...Toyota guys are purists at heart and think everything ever put on a Toyota is gold and will last forever (kinda like most Chevy guys) and they are too cheap to swap anything else out cause they don't have any other option for a swap that's worth a crap. So they leave the tranny alone (cause it is a good tranny) and try to make up for it with crazy low gearing.....but even with crazy low gearing, you are going to find a situation where you are cursing that third pedal, just like some situations you are going to be pissed at your gearing options of an auto (and round and round we keep going). Pretty pointless to argue this, would you all agree?

No, we're bored

I agree. You did say the auto is superior, which is a nudge in the pissing contest direction. My reply is that niether one will make you an ultra 4 champ. Cant speak for everyone though.

Dudes do work with those yotas. Itd be delusional to say theyre not mountain goats.

I said superior in one small aspect of wheeling (really technical crawling) as evident from everything you see in the entire industry (back to my original post), not in wheeling as a whole. Same as the manual is superior in many other aspects of wheeling

I can see it. I can also see how theyre great for all around stuff like u4. I can also see how the engine braking is nowhere to be found with an auto. A manual wont stop me from going anywhere I guess you could say.

I prefaced my agreement to that by saying super-hard-fooking-core I'd go auto. Cuz I have old man knees.
Don't go getting all agreeable :p:

Even though I like the SM465 because it is bullet proof (literally...try shooting one and see what happens), but I do agree with some of the draw backs cited here. The SM465 is, technically speaking, a 4-speed, but "granny" low on these transmissions is useless; therefore the SM465 is for all practical purposes a 3-speed. Also, I have done the "3-peddle tango" myself while off-roading with an SM465.
