Looking for transmission advice, TH350 or SM465

Even though I like the SM465 because it is bullet proof (literally...try shooting one and see what happens), but I do agree with some of the draw backs cited here. The SM465 is, technically speaking, a 4-speed, but "granny" low on these transmissions are useless; therefore the SM465 is for all practical purposes a 3-speed. Also, I have done the "3-peddle tango" myself while off-roading with an SM465.
Bicycle brake handle and cable. Awesome

I agree, and that's one reason that I'm not very interested in owning one (even though I prefer sticks for the types of driving that I do). 3-speeds (of either type) were obsolete even when these trucks were made, they are even more ridiculous today. I obviously prefer GM to Ford, but offering a decent O/D transmission is one area where Ford kicked GM's tail in the 80s. :doah:

:haha: :rotfl:

I would love an nv4500. It's just too expensive for me but if I was driving to the trail instead of trailering I'd probably save up for the 4500. Hard to beat some od for the longer hauls.

It's great reading through the comments lol. I want to thank everyone for their input.

I'm proably not gonna do a whole lot of technical crawling, just some. I'm headed back to Colorado June 2017 and wanna tear some trails up. I really do like driving a manual vs. an auto and working that clutch doesn't bother me one bit, I know it may be a pain in the ass on the trail but I'm willing to deal with it.

I read somewhere that the 465's were used in 2.5 ton dumps and were rated for a continous load of 400 or so lbs. of torque all day, every day.

I'm pretty sure I've been persuaded into throwing one of those chunks of cast iron that I have laying around into my K5.

and I dont have NV4500 money. I would spend my money on an LS before I bought a NV4500.

I've got so many little things that that I have to get that add up in the long run...

Back to the Springs area?

Does someone make a 32 spline mainshaft for the 465 and a 32 spline input gear for the 205 that plug into each other and eliminates the sleeve.

That's the only thing I don't like is those 10 spline and the coupler.

I am clearly late to the party, i was out of town camping... Ck5 was down so long i ended up actually getting out of my house and doing something in the real world haha

i love my 465. I didn't know anything about the 465 before i got it but i wanted a standard k5 and thats what i got. I have wheeled it a few times and really like the gearing of it. I have a 241 so ours may differ a little but still a great tranny. I have heard of third gear popping out but only from one person. When i upgraded to 33s and had 3.08s for gears, the tranny was annoying. Now with 373s its back in the power band and i love it. The only tranny i would ever swap in its place is a nv4500 and still thats a "maybe"... The OD on the highway would be nice...

Also late to the party, but I did get drug into this... I do love my 465/203. It works well for my purposes, and after fixing the slipping clutch and sloppy shifter, it is fun to drive. To each his own, whatever you're more comfortable with is what you run.

@bmxbryant9 he wants a 5 speed for a little more freeway speed.

Screw all of you.. Dsg is where it's at.. Dual clutch autos are the shiznit.. Lighting fast gear changes, will skip shift if you ask it.. Paddles, bangs gears like a manual drives similar to an auto, gets mpg like a manual. Reliable like a manual.. The future..

As far as the 465 being basically a three speed I call bs my 73 was originally three on tree there is a huge difference, I couldn't keep the three speed alive with 36 inch tires , can't kill the 465 with 39 inch boggers , I've tried!

Yes, how could I have been so stupid as to infer that an old Muncie 3-speed out of a 1965 Ford Econoline van is exactly just like an SM465. What was I thinking? :screwy:
