Hello Everyone

Just wanted to start a new build thread since finding my 86 K5. If you want to read the whole story click here if not here's the short version.

I bought this K5 when I was 16 and sold it when I was 18 due to financial strains, 10 years later I found it and bought it back. It's in a lot worse condition since I had it but I guess that will make for a better build thread.

So here are some specs on the truck. It's an 86' Steel Gray Metallic K5 with a Mark IV 454 Big Block, TH400 Trans, 12 Bolt rear and 10 bolt front. The interior has custom seats from a later model Suburban and a pretty nice stereo. Nothing major but a great point to start back at. It's like having a do over at my first car.

So here are some before and after pics. The first pics are of when I had it when I was 16-18 and the other pics are as it sits now. It's a big difference in person but you can see.

Pictures on the left are 2000 to 2002 range and pictures on the right are 2012 Before I went and picked it up.

So now that I have it back the first BIG project will be body and paint but for now I've got to just go through it and get it running again. It needs plugs, wires, cap, rotor, fuel pump, fuel filter and I need to get my carb guy to look over the fuel system. The front of the carb is missing quite a lot of vacuum hoses haha.

I'll keep everyone posted as it goes on and I would love any advice or input you have. It will be a slow build but it will be awesome.

The elusive 12 bolt front! Must have only been in the factory equipped big block 80s K5s....

:D

Sorry. I just had to.

Seriously though, you should go back and edit that or you'll get more sarcastic remarks. :haha:

Thanks for the heads up, it's corrected. :-)

Everyone's been asking what happened to the wheels so here's the story. The blazer was originally offered to me for $6,500 and I didn't want to spend that much so to make the deal work I told him I would buy it for $4,500 without the current wheels and tires. When he agreed he put on some old 31's and some older rally wheels.

If anyone is interested in the wheels they were just summit rally wheels normally found on corvettes with the oval long port 12" wide and he added the chrome accent ring to the outside and then added the original 4x4 center caps. He said the center caps had to be trimmed to fit but they looked good in person.

Hope that helps anyone interested.

496truck is right!

What happend to the ultra wide rally wheels that were on it?

No I actually have a set of wheels that he had laying around on it right now. The "After pics" in the first post were ones he took when he got it. I just haven't had time to snap some pics of it sitting in my driveway. It still has the 6" lift but just 31's and some old wheels.

Comb craigslist and be patient. I found my 35" BFG's, 90% tread for $400. Just take your time and shop hard for the big stuff......

Okay so here's some quick fun stuff from the glove box...

Big start today. I'm currently having the catalytic converters taken off and replaced with straight pipes to let my 40 series breathe better.

When I get back to the house we've got an all new ignition setup and fuel delivery system to get it running right.:):)

Quick Update.

Yesterday was a huge success in getting the K5 to run right and work out some trash and kinks in the motor.

We replaced the following items.
Spark Plugs
Spark Plug Wires
Cap & Rotor
Changed from Electric Holly Blue Pump (loudest pump ever made) to Mechanical Fuel Pump
Removed un-needed electrical wiring
Added new fuel hose temporarily until I replace all new hard lines
Added new fuel filter and removed the hokey billet filter and regulator
Corrected 80% of it's vacuum leaks but still hunting for more.
Removed the HORRIBLE catalytic converters!!! YES!

I also found some major issues that lead me to find why it didn't have nearly the power it did when I owned it before.

Here are some pics of the items we used when we did the tune up.

I'll post some pictures of the engine compartment "after" the tune up as well but for now so you know where we started here are some pics of the engine before we started.

and here is the pile of junk when we got done. We had to do it Stacy David style and just throw everything into a big pile.

So how does it run now? ... SIMPLY AMAZING!

It had the same spark plug wires, cap and rotor that it had when I bought it! That's 12-13 years ago. Also, someone had completely removed the downshift wire for my TH400 transmission so it wasn't down shifting correctly AND with all the vacuum leaks the secondaries in the carb wouldn't open at full throttle.

Now it doesn't have any major vacuum leaks so all 4 barrels open on the carb, it down shifts properly and is so much fun to drive.

I did find the brake booster is leaking and the wiring is a JOKE, my buddy cut out 5 butt connectors just from the electric holly fuel pump to the fuse block? and we counted over 20 more just in the front lighting harness. Crazy.

I plan on getting a nice video with my GoPro next weekend so we can do a ride along to see how great it drives and sounds. I have a list a mile long but now I can prioritize and figure out the big ticket items.

Here is a quick picture I took of what it looks like right now in the driveway. Not great looking yet, but it will be.

MAN DID I MISS THAT BIG BLOCK!

What are you doing with that electric pump setup?? Im looking to do something with my broncoII and that may work..... :dunno:

Its in the trash but I can dig it out if you want it. It runs fine and can even be rebuilt if you need to.
