M1009 Standard Shift Build(The Greatest Adventure)

I got my xj shaft. It does not have the plastic pieces I have seen in most of the write ups. I can't get it to collapse and my efforts so far have only resulted in bending the ears that hold the u joints in. They bent back really easy, but I ruined a couple tabs that hold the caps on.

Also I succeeded in getting my knuckle on. Important note, put studs on first or you will have to take it back off. I wish ord sold these things ready to go with studs and ball joints. It has been super frustrating to get all the right parts. I ended up ordering the studs from CCOR, and they were very helpful. I couldn't find them anywhere locally.

Rich, put some heat to the shaft in order to collapse it. There is plastic inside much like the way factory GM u joints are held in the yokes, once you heat it up pull it apart and clean it out and add some grease.

So once you heated it up you got your shaft in...that's usually how it works for me too...:D

Looks good man

Yea, im used to cooling it down to shrink the shaft so it fits

That's what I'm talking about.

Hey Rich, I put an XJ shaft on mine a few years ago, and it ended up failing on me and leaving me with no steering. The problem was that the smaller diameter part of the shaft came loose or something and was spinning inside the larger diameter part closer to the firewall. Some guys on here said that they welded theirs at that spot. Just letting you know. Lots of guys love the XJ shaft, but I went back to the old rag joint style after that incident.

That two different diameters on the steering shaft are there so it can collapse during an impact so you don't get crushed by the steering column. :deal: I would not suggest welding the shaft

I think people weld the upper section where there is a rubber bushing. If I hadn't bought a mac I would be using paint right now to show you where.

This tab on the back of the dust shield hits my knuckle. Should I just cut it off?

I say just flatten it with a hammer. I don't remember ever seeing a tab like that before. What did it originally come off of?

My dust shield/caliper mounts always look all beat up and cauliflowered anyway. I don't think it matters if they're straight except for the part that the spindle goes on.

I wasn't talking about the part where it collapses. I was talking about the upper part. It would still collapse if you welded the piece that let go on mine. I still don't want to run one anymore though. I couldn't tell a difference in the steering feel anyway.

Thats the original dust shield for the ten bolt. They key into the knuckle. It is pretty thick, I will probably have to cut it as opposed to flattening.

Just wondering, I take it the new knuckle doesn't have a hole where that tab keys into?

You've got me wondering now. I have a couple of extra ones lying around. I'm going to look at them after work if I can get to them easily. :dunno:

Ordered a couple of these. Hopefully will have them out on the trail in a couple weeks. I still have a small list of things to do to get my truck together for ma bell.

Diff breathers
Rear t-case seal
re route fuel line for shocks
alignment

and most importantly mount front shocks...

I hope to get a little driving time in by thursday without my shocks. I need to find a wall to do some flex testing before I can mount them up.
