M1028- [under new management]

I've had the same grooving/siping knife for years. One of the best tool investments ever.

Sipe the big center blocks. Easy and always helps. Avoid the outers.

I grooved and siped a set of Michelin XL's about four years ago. Holy **** was that a work out. My arms and back were sore for days. I even bent the knife a little.

So I wanted a little protection for my rockers but I still have the saddle tank so I couldn't do real sliders. I knew I had some large diameter tubing laying around at home. Cut a cardboard template and it matched the curve of the rocker. Cut a few slices with the plasma cutter. The tube was 30 inches long and the rockers are 44 inches so three slices will do the job. Cut a piece of 1/4x1 and drilled it for the pinch bead. I know this isn't ideal but anything is better than nothing. Tube was also 1/4 inch wall tubing. Got one side tacked up. Will finish weld and do the other side tomorrow. Fits tight on the rocker.

Truck wouldn't start the other day. Fought with it for two days. Getting fuel so must be glow plugs. Checked glow plug relay and it's getting 24V to it, so suspect resistor pack is bad. Went ahead and did the 24V to 12V swap today to eliminate the resistor pack. 6 of 8 glow plugs were bad. Swapped in a new set. Started right up. So, I'm back to being ready for Tuttle Friday. Now that the second alternator is gone I need a belt to drive the PS pump. Cut down the old belt to mark it and min and max adjustment travel. Will pick one up tomorrow. The swap also eliminated the problem where the belt wrap on the PS pump only ran from about 3 o'clock to 4:30 so it could slip under high load. Now it will have full wrap on the pulley.

Sweet! Glad you got it figured out. Will the new belt run on the bigger pulley or the smaller one on the pump? I've got a pulley that I meant to put on that has two rows, both of a smaller diameter that I meant to give to you if you're interested.

I thought you were picking up a spare tire and wheel?

Martin

Oh, that. Yeah I got a spare 12 bolt, PVC insert and a 95% Baja. He's either out now or almost out of 95% tires.

Got back from the maiden voyage today. Drove it 3 hours down to Tuttle at 60-65, wheeled two days and drove it 3 hours home without even the slightest hitch. It performed flawlessly and I was able to do anything that anyone else did. Thanks Mike, you built a great truck!

I'm happy that you're happy with it! It's nice to see it being used what it was built for :)

Awesome!

Super glad this went to somebody that used it for how it was built. And even better yet, kept up on the thread for all us whores.

About 13 average for the whole thing. Used a total of 25 gallons from my house north of Lincoln which is 140 miles, wheeled two days, and back. My speedo and odo are off so going by mapquest.

Was cool to see this thing climb some rocks finally! I like the grooved baja's even more from seeing them in person.

I forgot to give you the groover this weekend. Stop by sometime if you want to get it or bring your truck/tires out sometime if you want to do it in a heated shop. Goes much faster if the tires are warm to start.

Finally figured out my charging issue. Apparently there is some charging relay somewhere. My exciter wire was dead so I just spliced in a wire to a switched 12V and BAM 14.4 volts charging. I was so excited. Until I shut off the key...and the truck kept running. Tried a couple other tap locations and found one that wasn't tied at all to the ignition and now it works fine. Also my glow plug solenoid was acting up so I swapped in a S603. I was going to go push-button glow but my card is apparently still good so I left it like stock. Going on a wheeling trip 4/18-19 so it's now good to go. Mike, the guy the built the truck, is going with me so he will get to see how good it does.
