I don't think anyone is doubting the amount of money you've spent on your rig. For most of us on this site, it's more about building a rig, not how much it costs. There are rigs on this site from one end of the spectrum to the other. I will have less in my entire truck than you have in your motor.

That being said, nice truck, and thank you for your service.

Hey Bowtie,

Thank you. It is my pleasure to serve you, everyone and our country. I didn't take it at all the wrong way. I don't think Avery was doubting me at all. Maybe the use of challenge was wrong. I'll correct it. Today it is so easy to rack up expenses. Believe me, I didn't even know how much I spent until I sat down and pulled up Excel on MSOffice, and bam! 23K. Ouch! I must admit, the 383 wasn't planned for this stage. It was something I wanted to do down the line, however, as you can read in an earlier post, the situation warranted it.

The one thing I know is that my rig isn't any better than anyone else's here. I've just tried to take all the years of reading and practicing off-roading experience and apply it to this rig. It's my perception of what I feel a capable off-road rig is like. Is my perception the only way? ABSOLUTELY NOT! Every rig here, whether a stocker or a monster build up, is special and if someone can do it cheaper and better than I, go for it! I don't feel I've bought this truck. I'm making it. And I'll be doing all the labor for the most part with a good friend who is on this board too! I like to think that my rig is an extension of my personality. I think you can look at everyones rig and see a whole lot of them in it. JMHO.

I appreciate what everyone has said about my truck. Do you want to know what I'm really looking forward to? It's what everyone has to say, constructively and destructively towards what I did, how I did it, and what I could have done another way, to get the same results. I just want this to be FUN! :D

Thanks!

Manny

Manny, Janke builds good engines. I really think you'll like yours. I know some truck pullers who like theirs.

I didn't mean to imply that you didn't build your rig yourself, and I think everyone on this board can relate to the cost of doing a buildup of any scale on one of these trucks. My truck will eventually be fully built too, building them is almost as fun as driving them. Keep the pictures coming.

Hey Ryoken,

No problem. . The Dyno revealed self-retardation in the motor which may be linked to my ACCEL Distributor. He is going to change out to a MSD to see if it rectifies the problem. If so, looks like I'll have a MSD!

Manny

hmmm, I've never been a fan of Accel stuff... But I'm definitely an MSD fan, ran a MSD Pro Billett in the BB in my Chevelle and loved it...

as a sidenote, 383 is what I'm eventually doing for my 87.... :D

So, you know Mr. Janke? Are you from San Antonio originally, or have his motors made it up that far north?

Kudos!

Nah, don't sweat it. I didn't take it that way at all. It's all good. You're right! Building is just as much fun as driving them.

You know, I find cleaning up after a day of muddin just as fun if not better than the muddin itself. Why? I haven't figured it out yet. It's just that...FUN! :wink1:

Don't worry, pics are ah comin'

You got a sweet deal on the engine, I ran one of Janke's engines about 8 years ago in a 67 Chevy II, built me a 427 SB that pulled the wheels off the ground and ran consistent 9.90's and lasted though what I put it though.

Okay boys,

Here it is. I went down to Mr. Janke's today to see my baby 383. What a 383 stroker I have. First off, I had to replace my distributor with an ACCEL coil, with an MSD Pro-Billet unit. Big difference! She loves timing. How much? 40-41 degrees advanced! Carburetor? She breathed easy and loved the Holley 850 cfm with 80 jets (stock) and rejected the 750 cfm. ( What can I say, women like 'em bigger :D ). My old 750 choked her out and starved her for gas.

We did 15 runs today.

Run:

1. 37* MSD 850 CFM 82 Jet
2. 35* MSD 850 CFM 82 Jet
3. 39* MSD 850 CFM 82 Jet
4. 41* MSD 850 CFM 82 Jet
5. 43* MSD 850 CFM 82 Jet
6. 40* MSD 850 CFM 82 Jet (Pass 1)
7. 40* MSD 850 CFM 80 Jet (Pass 2 change to stock jet)
8. 40* MSD 750 CFM 80 Jet (Pass 1)
9. 40* MSD 750 CFM 80 Jet (Pass 2)
10. 40* MSD 850 CFM 82 Jet (Pass 1, leaner)
11. 40* MSD 850 CFM 82 Jet (Pass 2, leaner)
12. 40* MSD 850 CFM 82 Jet (Pass 1)
13. 40* MSD 850 CFM 82 Jet (Pass 2)
14. 40* MSD 850 CFM 80 Jet (Pass 1)
15. 40* MSD 850 CFM 80 Jet (Pass 2)

HP/Ft Lbs by run:

1. 519.8 / 525.2
2. 517.4 / 521.4
3. 519.7 / 522.8
4. 523.7 / 528.7
5. 521.8 / 523.7
6. 520.3 / 518.8
7. 519.9 / 525.3
8. 513.0 / 501.3
9. 516.3 / 504.3
10. 518.3 / 517.8
11. 520.4 / 516.7
12. 518.4 / 520.2
13. 514.3 / 516.5
14. 519.7 / 516.8
15. 518.4 / 518.4

+/- margins: HP: +/- 10.7 Ft/lbs: +/- 27.4

Notice the change in lines 7-9. See how the 750 choked the crap outta her?

and here are a few movies from today. Sorry guys, the sound sucks. I only had my cell phone to work with. I'm trying to get a video camera so that I can take real good pics and sound. Lemme tell ya, this motor sounds like a real pro MUD Racer and a great tuned muscle car. Mr. Janke's set up mounts the engine on motor mounts just like it is in the real truck. She purred and didn't even vibrate. Shes perfectly balanced.

Sorry, I don't think the sound link is working. I'm new to this. My cell phone microphone doesn't give justice to the engine anyway.

I cannot begin to tell you how happy I am with this motor. I'm excited about it. Mr. Janke has treated me like a son and has done so much to bless me. This motor is a sleeper, but has balls of steel! I've never had 500 HP under my boots before. I hope I can handle her.

Well, it's 12:19 AM Sunday, and I am bushwacked. I have pictures of my Dana 60 and GM 14 Bolt workup to post, but that will have to wait until tomorrow. Til then, enjoy, and God Bless!

GM 14Bolt gets a face lift...part I

Hey Y'all,

Well, here is the beginning of the GM 14 Bolt rebuild. I wire wheeled her down. She didn't have too much to clean off, so it went rather smooth. I can't imagine doing this job with a drill. I'm grateful my friend had a grinder. A 4" wire wheel made the rust eat it's own dust! :haha: Anyhow, 1 hour of wire wheeling, and then an hour of professional grade EZ-OFF oven cleaner, and she was ready to be primed.

I primed her yesterday, along with the D60 spring plates, and BlackWidowPerformance's parts to do the disc brake swap.

Tonight (4Dec) I'm going to put the semi-gloss black paint on. I've used rustoleum spray from Lowes. No sense spending tons of $$$ on a great paint job when the axles are going to be buried in MUD.

Here are a few pics for y'all.

I'll have more pics of the primed and painted tonight. She's coming along, slowly but surely. Can't wait for the buildup to start!

Oh, BTW, the pinion yoke is a 1410 HD from Jesse at HighAngleDriveline. He has been terrific! Jesse is guiding me through the drivetrain process step by step. He will be making me some 1 Tonners' for my baby! Can't wait!
