This is my truck...bought it brand new in 2002 it`s got just under 3 hundred thousand KLMS on it now hundred and 86 thousand miles.

I need to do a bunch of repairing and maintenance to it so I though I would post it so I could ask for some opinions, and show you guys what a old Alberta truck looks like after driving on gravel for 10 years. :doah:

First thing...I `m going to get some antifreeze test strips to measure how bad the acid is in my coolant...I may have screwed my self on this one.

Everything else on this truck I have been good about keeping up on,but not the coolant. Can`t get any test strips until tomorrow so we will see how that goes next week!???

still looks way better than a 10 year old truck from MI Dean....I dig that truck!
You thinking head damage like Russell has?

Looks like its starting to cool down in Clive huh?

Well it looks better than it is.
I got no trouble with it at all but yeah Russell's Lb7 has me worried.
Yesterday I noticed my cab corners are rusted out!:doah:
Now I got to do some welding on that, probably going to Rino line the bottom of the truck.???
The poor thing needs some TLC.

Worst part about the cooling system is that I've known about changing the antifreeze forever just one of those things I always put off.

Stupid me! Don't fix it till its broke may cost me a engine in the long run!???

Mine too Max...I figured I'd put rock sliders on it when I cut out the rust!

Ah with that new info. Don't bother testing it. It's ****ed.

Flush it now. Don't just change it. Flush it. Do it now. Then let 'er buck, and keep fingers crossed.

Ok Luke.
Next question should I put Dexcool back in it?
And should I take it to the dealer for a flush?

Our water on the farm is high in sodium and with it being so cold outside I don't have a great spot to try and flush the system.

I wouldn't go to the dealer for anything. Ever. Unless it's warranty, and you have absolutely no other choice.

Honestly, if you don't have somewhere to work inside. Take it to Armor in Reddeer. Now FYI, a flush is not just running water through it.

What I do when a customer gets a flush on a highway truck, or genset, or equipment, is pull the thermostats, run a cooling system cleaner in it. Run it up to operateing temp. Dump. Repeat. Fill with hot water and calgon mix. Run to temp. Dump. Repeat.

How many times you do each step is a matter of experience, on watching how the mixture comes out. When it's done right, it's not a halfassed procedure. It cleans the scale out of the rad and block. All the sludge and muck. They you get back to clean surfaces that get maximum heat transfer. And full flow.

It amuses me when someone says they shoved a garden hose in the rad and let it flow for 5 minutes and calls it flushed. But, I'd be out of a job if everyone knew what they were doing.

Figures you know the guys at Armor!:D
I don't but I've seen there trucks!

I am probably going to take it to Weidners in Lacombe... Talked to them this morning and made him explain how they do a flush to me,just like you described it. Plus that is Where my Father in law get his new Duramax and there new Denali serviced. We know them good and they know us.

Plus I can get the farm to pay for it... cause I sold it too the farm for a dollar last year.
I hear you about dealers my truck has only been back once in it life for warranty. But I really dropped the ball on this.

Ah good. Get it done right, right now. Ya it happens. Honestly I don't use dexcool ever. Or any long life coolant. Everything I own gets HD coolant.

Lol right on. It's been 10 years already. A few more days isn't gonna change anything at this point!

Luke, HD's don't take coolant! :waytogo:

Got it flushed today...I didn't do it but the shop that did said that it looked Ok.. not sludge and real dirty!
That's a good thing!:thumb:

I tested the old coolant and it tested 7.0 ph?
Luke told me the test I took is not accurate, I believe he is right but that was the best I could do with what I had.

I just feel better with new coolant in it!
Fingers crossed that everything will be good with it!

sounds good Dean, I wonder if the antifreeze could be checked for metal particles, like an oil test?
And what parameters would be considered normal for that engine???
Maybe overthinking it some there.
Like Luke says drive it and never look back!
So what other things need attention, or modification...you know you can get plenty of ideas here! $$$$$

Dave at this point I don't even what to know what was in it.:eek1:
Just glad it's gone. :thumb:

Next up is some attention to the body and frame.
The drive train is mostly stock...and the engine has a 65 up program that is were I left it to keep the ally happy.

If I had more money...I got lots of ideas!
