May Rubicon trip

I know, are there any places close to you. I'd be down for a day trip in the near future.
Thanks, its pretty sweet seeing it on there! :D

My truck is down until late April, then Rubicon. Probably do a quick shakedown before the trip but it won't be much more than some trail riding to see what shakes loose before the trip. We'll figure out something eventually.

Well I might be out, I'm hopefully getting a job working for coca cola and with my school schedule they will have me working weekends. Hopefully I will be able to make it this trip though. If not I will be going sometime this summer. the blazer is still good, swapping rear springs.

No worries there will be plenty more trips if you dont make this one! There will be one in june, mid month I believe with a bay area group. I'll keep you both posted on that. Prarie city is probably the closest for both of you but if skunked cant go id be down to go, its probably a good drive for you.

Hows everyone doing?

I just talked to a guy who ran the rubicon this last weekend and there was no snow in sight. He said it was soupy but thats no biggie.

Theres a chance I may trailer the truck up to the con for its first run so I may not get to running the section before loon lake. The plan is to still go up friday morning and camp at loon that night.

I still need to gather some spare parts and rebuild my king pins. Starting work with my new job tomorrow. Hopefully I will be able to get these days off to go

Hope it goes well!

I also hope you make it! need moar bowtie! I got my king pin stuff from a friend but it was originally from ORD. I think its about $35.

I still have to weld my sliders on, swap in the 14 bolt, do some fender clearance and more!

I was up camping at Faucherie a couple weeks ago, some snow on the ground but it was really nice during the day. High 20's at night :D We can meet at Loon if you decide to trailer, that's not an issue.

I've been gathering more parts and some misc stuff needed for the trip. I finally bought a new tree saver and a couple shackles, still need a snatch block. Also picked up a new porta$hitter and wag bags

WFO sells most of the Kingpin parts, Parts Mike is local and has it all too.

I still have lots of works to do, I have a wedding this weekend and then my weekends free up. Hopefully my winch is here first of this next week so I can get the A-Bomb mounted, springs reattached and move onto the FUSH, D60 seals, twin stick & rear end mods. Somewhere after these mods and before the con I need to do a shakedown run too :doah:

Yeah i too have some rigging stuff including a 30k tow strap.

Where did you get your wag bag?

When I think of the rubicon trail, I think one entrance and one exit. Sounds like I'm wrong. So.... is this part of the trail you guys are planning the hardest part, medium, or a combination of those? It's quite the drive and expense for me to trailer my truck up. (Too long of a drive without doors, unless I swap them at someone's house maybe) Regardless, it's quite the drive.

Anyway, I'd like to do the hardest part of the trail if I'm making the drive up. I realize Jeepers have been ruining the trail and most of it is easy now though :(

My truck is ready with spare parts (knock on wood) and recovery equipment. (except OBA) My only failure is in camping stuff. I've never camped outside of a campground (toilets, showers, snacks) lol so I'm super clueless in that regard. I've got a nice small tent, good sleeping bag, and Coleman stove. A bag full of snacks should sufice for the weekend though right? Lol And these poopin bags and portables sound great, haven't a clue about them though.

There is basically one way in and out once you get to Loon, we we're just chit chatting about a couple smaller/easier trails before Loon. Either way, we would all meet up at Loon Campgrounds for Friday night and hit the trail Saturday AM. It's asphalt all the way to Loon, take a look at this link that talks about the trail heads:http://www.rubicontrail.org/rtf-directions.htm

If you want to trailer up to my place you are more than welcome to leave your trailer and truck or swap doors if that's easier :dunno:

About 5-10 minutes from the Trail head on the Tahoe side my parents have a place if we get in a pinch.

As far as running all the harder lines on Rubicon, that won't be an issue :D There are bypasses for those that need them.....

Food is easy, whatever to snack on and maybe something to burn over an open fire at night.

Yeah for the most part you are right! There is one way in and one way out, however it can be run loon to tahoe or in reverse of that. There's a portion of the trail that starts at Airport Flat which is a campground. That part of the trail is roughly 5 or more miles long and is easier than the rest of the trail. We originally thought of running the entire trail, including the airport camp to wentworth spring length.

Trail Map:

http://barlows.us/rubicon/media/rubitrailmap.jpg

Im thinking it would be a good idea for me to tow my truck up there since its my first time on the Rubicon and second wheeling trip overall. This would make it hard to do the earlier stage and i dont want to leave my tow rig so far away from loon lake. I also don't want to bite off more then i can chew.

Yeah unfortunately the jeepers have made it easier so they dont ding there cute little doors but the trail can be made more difficult by taking harder lines and avoiding bypasses.

Sounds like you have what you need! We'll be running the trail with my coworker who's been on it numerous times and has OBA capable of inflating 40's.

Anything you bring camping would apply to this with the only difference being theres no clean water or bathrooms. Im not sure if a port o potty has been added anywhere in the trail so having waste bags and a makeshift toilet is imperative. I dont believe you can have a campfire unless its at Rubicon springs but i need to check on that, just in case i need to haul firewood.

Sounds like you should come along! :thumb:

Skunked: how far away are you located from where you'd like to meet? I'd love to trailer it to your house, then drive it in. That would be easy. I would only run my full doors if I were to drive it from my house, but would rather wheel with my tube doors.

Looking at the map, where would we meet and where would your best guess for sleeping Saturday night be?

I'm about 2hrs from loon lake or about 45 minutes from Georgetown. Plenty of room for trailers at my place.

So Friday night we sleep at Loon lake. Saturday we hit the trail. Sunday we sleep rubicon springs halfway-ish point.

Do I need a spot or reservation for Loon lake camping?

I checked the days and I'm off that weekend. Looks like an 8 hour drive, without stops, for me. Does Loon Lake have room for truck/trailer parking?

Skunked: since you are only 2 hours away, does that mean you'll be joining us on Saturday or will you still be doing Friday night camping? Also, what kind of weather are you expecting?

I'd like to make it. Going to see if my brother can come along, wont be such a lonely drive. Blazer just needs some maintenance. Wish I could finish front half of cage but I'll be spread thin $$$ wise after taxes and paying for trailer rental/ fuel. :(

Correct for the most part!

Friday at loon lake, start wheeling early Saturday to make it to rubicon springs, spend the night there and then wheel out to tahoe on Sunday.

Skunked wants to meet up friday at loon so we can camp together and fish or do any last second vehicle checks. There is a boat launch area for keeping trucks and trailer which has ample room. Theres also over flow parking and trailer parking at the beginning of the trail.

If the weather is like it is now it should be sunny...maybe in the high 60s or low 70s. From what I hear there still a bit of water on the trail but itll burn off and if not it doesn't compromise the trail.

We hope you make it!!

Do I need a reservation?

Are you guys sleeping in the truck or actually pitching a tent on the trail? (rubicon springs)

PS> D'oh, the whole Saturday/Sunday thing is exactly what I was thinking already. Words and structure got in the way lol

I have a small tent ill be bringing and using both nights. I just checked el Dorado forests website and it says loon campground is closed until july 25. I'll call tomorrow to see whats going on with that. It may be first come first serve. Hahaha no worries I figured you knew that.

Airport Flat is open all year (Thanks to Tim Wardlow for volunteering) and North Shore (before 2nd Dam) is open (Thanks to Tim Green, Tim Webster, John Arenz and myself) who have volunteered to check up on it.

Weather can be all over the map for May, definitely bring warm clothes. I'll probably bring my tent cot or a small tent. Packing a tarp is a wise decision.

and yes, I'll be going up Friday morning sometime and I expect to be at Loon mid dayish.
