Metal's LSx swap; Finally up and running!

Found a 85k 5.3 4l60e 2wd combo out of an avalanche for $800. I may pick it up and sell the 4l60e. I found a guy parting a 2002 engine.

To make the newer engine dbc all I meed is intake manifold / injectors / throttle body and harness and pcm right?

Guy I'm talking to has everything but the pcm on a motor with a bent rod. Anything else I should get from him? What to look for?

That would certainly do it. Although you don't really need the injectors and intake.

I thought there was the whole 3 bolt vs 4 bolt thing.

Cool deal. I'm going to try and pick that stuff all up.

The motor shop is closed on labor day. The only day I have off. So I'm trying to make ways to pick everything up on weekends.

IIRC it was only the 99-00 that got the old ev1 style injectors. Everything after that got the Delphi style. The 3 bolt vs 4 bolt throttle body is for the gen3 vs gen4 stuff.

Well, looks like next week I should be picking up my full take out 5.3l. If everything is really as the place says, I should be out the door for $450.

After reading back through lt1swap it looks like I need to get the dakota digital vss adapter with my 700r4 for better drivability. Pn. - sen-01-4160.

I want the best mileage / power / driveablity so it also looks like I need to keep all 4 o2 sensors? If I am running the exhaust like stock can I set it up for 3? Each bank gets one pre-cat then they share the cat and have 1 sensor after?

I am assuming it would be best to keep egr as well?

The stock 87 tank doesn't have evap controls as far as I know. So, it looks like I can get rid of the wiring for that.

Look into the "jags that run" speed sensor adapters too.

Run only the front two. The rears are only for sniffing after the cat to make sure they are working properly.

EGR is always up for debate. Although i cant think of a single swap that retained the EGR. I would say ditch it, but thats just what i and probably 90% of other swappers do.

Yep. It can go bye bye.

Cool deal. Thanks y5mgisi.

I missed it in your build thread. What did you do for egr block off on the manifolds and intake?

I just used 03+intake and exhaust. There are no egr ports. But, if you get on ebay and search, "ls1 egr block off" you will find all that you need.

i'm not 100% but believe the post cat O2s are only to tell if the cats are working not for tune

correct in that info . and why lots of older vehicle swap in projects get them deleted if no cats run .

Got the engine

Woot! got my 5.3l. It is from a 2001 Tahoe. They included the AC comp, Power steering pump, Fan/clutch, starter and alternator. I got them to include the first section of exhaust with the 02 sensors and the Maf sensor.

I ended up taking the day off to go up to a place in Tulsa. The price wasn't near a good as the other place, but the parts where inside a building. The smaller yard had them just sitting out side with oil ports open to the elements and the rag stuffed in the oil fill tube. Made me a bit uneasy. Plus the 5.3 ended up being a 4.8l.

I didn't think about it when i was there, but is there an IAT sensor between the air filter and the intake manifold?

It was kinda filthy when I got it. I started cleaning it up some, going to replace most the gaskets I think. Already replaced the spark plugs. I tried to look into the spark plug holes to verify it was in fact a 5.3l by checking the pistons.

They gave me paper work on the vin but didn't have the truck it came form on the lot. They only keep parts. The paint markings done by their guys confused me. I am pretty sure its a 5.3l though. There is a small factory looking dot next to the 5.3l stamp on the back, no green paint line on either though.

Two bolts were already broken in the head when I was stripping it down. I have never removed a broken bolt before. Any tips on what I need to do/buy to fix it? Where can I factory style replacement bolts?

I think I have a line on a cheap set of F body manifolds. I am unsure what year.... they said, "early f-body". is 98-99 the ones I need?

On to PICS:
