Matts doose

Hey matt, When I built a dunebuggy in high school the court house in cody put other on the title. It was a 68 vw bug and I did not have a title and when I shortend it the vin# went away. I had to get a state issued vin and they called it other. That name stuck everybody called it the other. That was 28 years ago I'm sure that the rules have changed.

The form I found you have to have a vin inspection done by sheriff to confirm there is no existing VIN number, then fill out form then they issue a vin then attach it and have another inspection. Other thing I gotta check into is insurance on it, how they do liability on a homemade vehicle. I want to license and insure it so I can drive on highway when needed and forest service in Wyoming requires it for vehicles bigger than a 4 wheeler.

Skip all the headaches. Put a few square feet inches or a jeep cowl on it. Buy a landcrusier or cj title and vin and bypass the whole mess. I mucho easier to get it insured. I

that would probably be easier, especially for the insurance. I don't think the registration thing is too bad here.

I have a title for a 79 Dodge 1 ton 2wd but no vin plate.

Is it diesel? , I.e., no smog? :deal:
Er, do you even have to smog?
Gawd, I hate California. :doah:

You can apply for a new vin.

From what I'm reading, in your DOT's 'State Asigned Vin' section of the vehicle code,
You only need to provide absolute proof you own the vehicle....which is the title. :deal:

Get a cop to sign the necessary form, and your good to get a new VIN# and tags. :dunno:

The "vehicle", by law, would require you change the status, to "rebuilt".
(being part Dodge.... :waytogo:)
Thus, by law, you need a new VIN number, and VIN tags. :D

So, in turn... YOU don't need new VIN plates... YOUR STATE needs you to have new ones.:woot:

Yeah I think they require either a title or receipts of items to prove ownership. If they can use that title and issue qla Von that would still be a 79 Dodge that might make insurance easier. Or I can stamp the old vin into chassis.

The thing I got scared of was being in an accident and having a claim on the insurance. Any adjuster and cop will know right off the bat that you don't have a Dodge truck.

I licensed and insured a 87 suburban just for the tags. I had the VIN but never installed it on the buggy. I think I cut the VIN off with a large chuck of the cowl area so that I had a chance of welding it into the chassis and it "being real".

I would try to do the homebuilt deal and see if you can get insurance on something like that, if not can you put a rider on your house or you that is a liability rider?

I don't know what I'm going to do on the next one but I just took title to an 04' truck that was wrecked. Probably won't do an Ibex but it's tempting. My next thing is to figure out the licensing and insurance thing myself.

I am obviously a ling ways before needing insurance and registration but while waiting on parts in the mail figured start looking into what is needed. I'm going to try to swing into insurance office and see what it take to get liability on a homemade vehicle. I'm sure guys that build kit cars run into same ordeal. I know registering it will be easy and no need for inspection/smog here in big wonderful wyoming.

Your forget about the wind till you go someplace it isn't blowing.
