Motor Swap - Complete!

Keep in mind that you may not be able to snake a complete new line in there withe tge motor already in. I just dont want to see you waste a bunch of time at the junk yard only to come home amd not be able to instal it.

Darren, I just seen this post. Glad you decided to do the work yourself first off. I just checked and I have a spare TBI inlet fitting so i'm of no help to you. I think I read somewhere on here you're going to remove/replace your injectors? If so you'll probably need new gaskets for the injector cover and I have them on my shelf. There are two different gaskets required.

Got the tbi all back together, thanks Scott

Now, where is the fuel pump relay?

I turned the key on to read oil pressure while priming, and doused the top of the motor in gas when the pump primed. :(

I didn't find the fuse, and need to disconnect it somehow.

Thanks guys

Nm, found the relay. Disconnected it, remembering there is a bypass through the oil pressure sending unit, but figured with NO relay in the circuit i was safe.

Good news is I have oil pressure. Bad news is i had another gas spray episode.

Thanks for the tip on the fuel line. I'm going to snag a whole one, and if i can't get it in, i'll use a tube compression union to turn it into a repair fitting. The high side of this system is only 15psi, the return side will NOT be high pressure.

That being said, its only hard line about 2" below the clip on the back of the block. And there is a connection at the frame next to the trans. So, as long as i find an 88-95 tbi truck, i should be golden. We'll see.

This issue needed to be fixed for quite a while, so oh well.

Thanks for the help on here guys, my posts have been brief. I passed the 30 hr mark some time today. I'm exhausted. Had help actually yanking the old, and stabbing the new in. Besides that, i've been on my own.

Going to take some hrs off work tomorrow, get to some yards, and put this thing back together. The end is in sight.

Fuel line, find TDC, install distributor/wires, fire it up, break in the cam. Clean up my disaster of a garage.

Hopefully i get lucky at the picknpull yards.

Well, the GM gods were on my side yesterday. Found a 88ish 3/4 ton burb with a 454 that i was able to steal fuel lines from, and some 350 tbi's for the adapter.

Disconnected my line, disconnected the 1 hold down nut on the motor, and snaked it out. Easy to slide back in too!

Next hiccup was injectors. Fired it up, was breaking in the cam, and the exhaust was REALLY hot. Chatted with Scott, decided it was running lean, and tried to time it. Well, it wouldn't idle long enough to time, and I noticed only 1 injector was firing.

Swapped injector plugs, same injector still wasn't firing.

Pulled the TBI again, swapped my injectors back in, and it fired right up! Put 100 miles on it yesterday after the cam breakin, and it seems to be running well. Cold start was WAY smoother this morning than the old motor.

We shall see how it runs once i can open it up.

Sounds like the end of the 500 mile break-in will happen about mid-trip this weekend. Think i should change the oil again in the 400 mile range, or wait til 600ish? Probably doesn't matter much.

Thanks for all your help everyone! And thanks Scott, for answering my paniced questions yesterday while my brain wasn't functioning!

Thanks guys. Biggest project I've ever attacked, by far.

I've got over 100 miles on it already, taking it easy. But, it definitely has more torque to maintain speed than it did before, and runs sooo much smoother at idle and on cold start.

We shall see how it does once opened up!
